BRW: Callahan takes leave of absence/voice

http://www.bostonradiowatch.com

" WEEI AM 850's resident right-winger Gerry Callahan has taken a medical leave of abscence effective yesterday(4/25). The one half of WEEI's top-ranked morning program has been battling a bad case of laryngitis or some sort of vocal cord ailgnment for the past few weeks. In recent days, Callahan was trying to work thru the hoaresness and scratchiness but the sound of his pipes didn't improve so some rest may do him some good. "

There was talk about Gerry's voice or lack thereof...now you know.
I remember when VB was filling in for Howie and his voice got so bad that a couple of the newsies
(back in the days when they HAD local newsies, not Metro service) had to finish the show.
Rod Fritz and Marga Bessette maybe?

Word is that someone in his family went to Ancesters.com and they found out that he has an African ancestor. He lost his voice immediately ;)

Callahan is an acerbic personality, and you are vehemently for him or against him. I hold no grudge against people who dislike him as long as no one holds a grudge against me for liking him! That said, a newspaper guy trying to 'make it' in radio cannot be happy with (A) his voice going south; (B) a ratcheting-down of 'shock radio' (which is his genre); and (C) the pending doom of the newspaper industry. Talk about a 'Perfect Storm' in his face!

and those two sounded great together on that show. They should have teamed up....maybe they would both have a job today

I agree, but all the guy does is make his living off of bitching about other people. He rarely ever has anything good to say about anything or anyone. I've never heard someone who has so much vinegar in their blood.

Though, I may not like him on the air, but I wish him no ill will.

I hope it is not a serious condition.,

Could this be a negotiation tactic?

If it's a negotiation tactic, then it's a tactic for the station. Why would you be MORE inclined to go with someone whose voice is gone? What other marbles does Callahan have in his bag BUT his voice? A bad voice on a tin-horn AM signal is the worst of all worlds. The next worst is a bad voice on a clear FM station. Callahan had better hope the newspaper industry magically rises from the dead (hint: it won't).

No problem with him not being on the airwaves!
His narrow view of the world turns my stomach.
He doesn't have a clue on most things he rants about!
To get a point across on that program, you have to come from his world:
1. I am Catholic
2. I am republican
3. I am white
4. Don't like rap music
5. I am against abortion
6. other (see 1-5)
