BRW: Celts back to WEEI next year

Quack, quack, ka-WHACK!

"Entercom and the Boston Celtics announced earlier today that team's broadcasts are moving from talker WRKO AM 680 to clustermater sports talker WEEI-AM 850 beginning with the 2007-2008 season through the term of the current deal."

The Green Team's press release:

Good for them. I have trouble picking up 'RKO after sundown. I am annoyed the Sox moved some games there.

I think this is a perfect move and a perfect match: a lousy baskeball team on a station that people nine miles out of the city can't pick up on a winter night. No use subjecting too many people to this inept franchise. The best way is to put the games on an inept night-time signal.

Considering the iffy night signal, note how much WEEI made last year: $36 million. The Sox and _daytime_
sports talk was probably a big part of that. But I'll bet they probably could have made more money
with Planet Mikey talk at night instead of Celtics games...but I guess they're hoping the Celts can turn
it around. Oh well, WEEI, it's only 80 games or so (unless they make the playoffs and you get some more
airings...) They were prob glad 'RKO had them the past 2 years...more time for local talk.

Good move for WEEI ( and WRKO ) . I think The Celtics will be a very good team next year ( If Danny Boy, Dont Make any STUPID AWFUL TRADE'S ) .

They are just in a rebuilding pattern right now. They'll bounce back and get back in the game next year. Just you wait and see... And the Celtic will get better too. ::)

It's not EEI I have the problem with, RKO's signal sucks at night. But then again there arent too many nights Im listening to basketnball on the radio

This will help Celtics radio sales efforts. Celtics must be happy. They simply have more cache being on EEI. Now if the team can get it rolling next year, that will make the move a slam dunk.

Has anyone else noticed that most of the EEI shows spend a lot of time talking up the Celts, who are the second worse team in the NBA and have been bad for decades now, and completely ignore the Bruins, who while not great are at lease close to .500?

Not much difference in futility between the two teams but I'm thinking since Entercom broadcasts the games, they hosts are told to talk up the inept Celts and ignore the bad, bad Bruins.

Not that your observations are unfounded, but there is more fan interest in the C's than the B's. For proof, check out the crowds for Celts vs. Bruins. Also, NBA is a more commercially viable league than the NHL. Last but not least, there seams to be more upside for the Celtics team going forward. And if they manage to snag Greg Oden in the draft this year, watch out.

Yes the Globe has mentioned that the Celts games are selling out due to things like interest in the game,
some low priced seats, the new cheerleaders, and concerts after some games. As a sport basketball is
more followed in the US than hockey.
btw I think there are a couple more Bruins games on WBZ then they're done for the year and the Celts
season is almost over, too. As for playoffs in NHL and NBA you may have to look around the dial for them.
It's possible ESPN Boston or WWZN may carry some especially championship round but I'm not sure if
games in other rounds will air though maybe on a distant station (or ...your TV)
