BRW: LeVeille Retiring!

WBZ's bench isn't exactly deep. Morgan White, Jr. has his trivia-oriented fans, but I can't see him carrying overnights five days a week, week in, week out. I assume Jordan Rich is out because of his weekday commitments. In the end, this might be the opportunity the Eye has prayed for to go syndie overnights and not take the heat for a change. Third time's the charm, as the saying goes...

I was going to say ... I'd almost think they have to pick up that hideous CBS Radio show.

The timing also seems a little ... rushed? Thinking he was nudged before he had the chance to jump off the cliff.

Ah, forgot about Bradley. Do you think he would connect with the shut-in/enlarged prostate crowd 25 hours a week?

Please don't give us Morgan, Jordan or Bradley full time.

I SECOND THAT EMOTION!

CBS has a history of doing this. The host announces his/her "retirement," which is really a buyout on the contract. The statement is often earmarked with the phrase that the host will be around from time to time or they may do a few commercials until they gradually don't do much of that anymore.

This seems really fishy, being that it happened all fo the sudden after Steve came off of two weeks of vacation, and no replacement has been named.

Here's an idea: run old Norm Nathan tapes.

With all of the talk that the suits at CBS have pushed WBZ to run quite a few hours of infomercials on weekends, why would these same CBS execs not push WBZ to fill 12:00midnight to 5:00AM with brokered-time programming? How about two hours of Brother Stair and three hours of Roy Masters on WBZ every night? The argument against such a move, I suppose, is that that sort of material would have a negative effect on the audience numbers in the adjacent hours. But do the suits care if that kind of programming maximizes revenues? The question would seem to be whether the rates for the other dayparts would take a hit greater than the increase in overnight revenues. Oh, and maybe not with Stair and Masters (WBZ could call the time block Stair-Master Radio), but with a lot of brokered-time programs, there is a big problem with collections and bouncing checks.

I would not be surprised if Jordan Rich doesn't give serious consideration to doing 5 nights a week. He could cut back a bit on CHART Productions. But knowing CBS I don't think that shift pays all that well.

I am surprised LeVellie is retiring I hope this is not a health related retirement and he can enjoy his time in Maine.

I am surprised

There was an odd feel to this vacation, coming after a number of days off. I remember not long ago his addressing retirement with a caller and he seemed so anxiousness about it you had to wonder if he'd get to that age (or leave prior)?

He said he would --to the caller-- I didn't buy it. I'm not surprised.

which is really a buyout on the contract.
This would make some sense if were not for the constant talk of vaca's, weekends, more time off, ect., ect.

Steve used to talk about beating out someone for the job who was not at the station. I didn't know who that was at the time but maybe he/she will apply again?
I don't think it will be Jordan or Morgan. Bradley J probably has a shot. Lots of applications, I just hope they don't go syndication.

I think he would ABSOLUTELY connect with that audience. Im no quite sure of his experience with the aforementioned enlarged prostate peeps, but I definitely make it a point to listen when I know he's filling in. I think hes the best one for the job and I hope he gets it

I'm all for Bradley Jay if I can continue to get my regular Mel Simons fix, which I have been getting ever since Bob Raleigh held down the insomnia shift.

Didn't WTKK pick up Overnight America?
Maybe CBS would get it for WBZ and TKK would turn to Hendrie again or who knows who...

Yeah, and Polka music on the new 101.7. ::) Stop it.

Just trying to stay ahead of Joseph Gallant. Of course, I can't prove that he isn't also joking--in the same spirit that I am. And I really DO think that it would be an, umm, inspired touch to call five hours of Brother Stair and Roy Masters the Stair Master program (a name that I believe I thought up myself). Someone at WBZ could doubtless figure out something from which they could promote this program as an, err, step up ;D

ha...

I would think they'd do some kind of locally based talk like Bradley Jay or maybe syndie but what is out there? Overnight America, done by CBS I believe, is one possibility--I think WTKK picked it up
(WTKK had Hendrie, then went back to John and Jeff but J&J ended their show shortly afterward)
but maybe they can take it over and TKK would do Hendrie again, etc. Maybe Jim Bohannon?

Red Eye is on WRKO, WXKS AM has Coast to Coast...
Brokered time? A simulcast of the audio from NECN or CNN Headline News? (Oh yes...WBZ radio
with Nancy Grace reruns)...

Maybe they'd have a local host for a few hours then pick up a syndie show like Bohannon.

Hope they keep it "live/local".

If not, it is like the only all-night drugstore now closing early.

Anyone else "live/local" overnight?

At least WBZ reaches everywhere and has news resources if there is some event (weather, tragedy, etc) that needs to be covered.

I agree with HHH that WBZ-1030's overnights should remain local.

However, I fear that a syndicated talk-show, or even a replay of that evening's "Nightside" (with the 4:05-4:30 A.M. period taken up by a paid program and the 4:30-5 A.M. period becoming a simulcast of the first half-hour of WBZ-4's morning news), is more likely.

When the Whitey Bulger news came out, the newsroom was shut down and they were rerunning canned newscasts.
