BRW Reports Raines Leaving WZLX

bostonradiowatch.com is reporting that Beau Raines is leaving as PD of 'ZLX. Could this be the first "rat" (no disrespect intended) leaving a sinking ship? Could this be an indication that the BCN/ZLX merge/mush/switch/whatever is acutally coming? That BZ will flip to 24/7 news and move their talkers to a FreeFm?

Maybe....or maybe not.

It's possible that WBCN-104.1 program director Dave Wellington could end up as PD of both WBCN and WZLX.

Thanks to consolidation, there are many cases where one person is programming two or more radio stations within one company's "cluster" in the same market.

I wouldn't call WZLX exactly a sinking ship. While their ratings are not what they once were before they had as much competition (mainly from WROR) and back when they still had Charles in the morning, they have stabilized, and I've heard that they bill very well within their demo.

Why does it have to be WBCN's program director? It could very
well be Pete Falconi from WODS programming both oldies and classic
rock.

In any event, WZLX and WBCN are not 'consolidating' and the only
sinking ship is in the original poster's empty head.

WZLX already has a Program Director. Carter Alan esentially runs that station anyway. He was offered the position when Buzz Knight left in 2002 only to turn it down.

Please stop with the BCN-ZLX consolidation rumours. As it has been said before on this board, they are totally baseless but have now gotten so out of control that you people are basing your speculations on each other rather than on what is actually happening.

Why did he turn it down?

didnt want the headache.

Beau Raines is a radio nice guy - a rarity. He will be missed.
Met him at a WROR party (I think Ringo Starr was in town or something)
over at the Harbor Lights Pavilion a few years back.

WZLX needs to make some changes. Carter Alan puts some good music on the
overnights - I would like to hear some of those classic rock nuggets played
in the daytime. With Mike & Jack FM invading territories, playing
Stairway To Freebird is going to cause backlash at some point.

Now Stairway To Cleveland from the Jefferson Starship & Diane Warren...

In addition, if you look at the recent trends, WBCN is the station that has to worry. They took a pretty sizable hit and is now behind WZLX in the 12+ numbers. And I'm sure with WZLX's older audience that they bill a lot better than WBCN, aside from Howard Stern and the Patriots.

And with Stern leaving mornings on WBCN soon, I'm sure WZLX will get a boost in the mornings. Karlson and MacKenzie do run an entertaining show that may grab the attention of many of the older displaced Stern listeners. I have a feeling that WBCN may be a later addition to the Free FM list, which may be a ship that sinks itself.

It seems WZLX dayparts much of their music. They tend to go slightly deeper into the music after 7pm with Kenny Young. Carter & Chuck stay with the playlist pretty much during their shows. During the overnights their jock 'Sauce' has a feature called 'Look What I Found In My Back Pocket' he goes way off the playlist. The live version of The Allman Brothers 'Whipping Post' to a deep cut or two from Pink Floyd. Are pretty much expected. If 'Sauce' picks those songs on his own. Well thats great. But at some point WZLX will have to expand the playlist. And test more songs......
