BRW--Salem sells 550 to Catholic group

BRW--Salem sells 550 to Catholic group

Got a tweet from @bostonradio saying Salem has sold WBZS 550 Pawtucket to a Catholic radio
group and he isn't sure if it's the same folks who own WQOM in Boston area (1060 Natick; Holy Family Comm.) No confirmation yet, looking...

Re: BRW--Salem sells 550 to Catholic group

That'd be kind of surprising considering Salem's purchase of the station was approved by the FCC exactly one year ago today. Not impossible, but it'd definitely be a surprise.

Re: BRW--Salem sells 550 to Catholic group

Too bad they didn't sell it to someone who'd put oldies on. :(

I wonder what that will mean for the NACEPF shows on 1320.

As I remember...when 1220-WRIB was purchased some years ago by the Evangelical Protestant Church in Seekonk...the new owners made it very clear that the Catholic programs which were on 1220 were no longer welcome.

Some of these "refugee" programs ended up on 1320. As far as I know...the only shows left from that group are the ones from NACEPF...and "The Armenian Radio Hour".

This station sale has suddenly "freed-up" another AM pre-set on my car stereo. ;)

Re: BRW--Salem sells 550 to Catholic group

I remember the Italian show was on 1320 too but she left for 88.1. I don't know if she's still on. But, I think you're right about the shows that went 100 kc. up the dial.

Do you have any stations left on your AM presets?

Of the available 6 settings, I'll only be using 5 now:

630: Mainly for the Cianci show. I would actually like to remove this one, but reception of 99.7 is too spotty in some of the areas I travel for that to happen.

790: For the John Batchelor show....for when I'm traveling in areas where his Boston affiliate 96.9 is too spotty.

920: For Rush...and that's about it.

990: For morbid curiosity.

1320: Same reason as 990.

Re: BRW--Salem sells 550 to Catholic group

There's always RIDOT 1630 for the last one!

I have both 630 & 99.7 on my presets because in E. Ma. @ night, if one doesn't come in, the other may. The only Providence station to come in out here is 790 & it'd be nice if they weren't doing the format they do because I could plug that in. I liked Batchelor's show a few years ago; I had put him on 1570/WPEP. I don't know how it is now because I have to be up @ 4.

Re: BRW--Salem sells 550 to Catholic group

I never had 550 on as a preset. The signal from 550 is so susceptible to interference, it's hard to listen to.

Re: BRW--Salem sells 550 to Catholic group

A $200,000 profit in one year is pretty sweet... It seems curious. Did Salem buy the station below market value, or was Relevant Radio willing to get into the market at any cost?
