BRW: Severin back to Boston only (Jay _HAD_ issues nationwide...)

As of Oct 9 Jay Severin will go back to 3-7 pm on WTKK Boston
in an "exclusive to Boston" deal with Greater Media. Am guessing this means
his national gig with CBS/W1 flopped (lasted less than a year), unless for
some reason he'll be doing his national show, too...

http://www.bostonradiowatch.com

All Political Talk Is Local

Probably not a national show - unless IN ADDTION to his new local show (in PM drive).
His national show did not do well in Boston and Greater Media is insisting he move to Boston and do a LOCAL show.
Another indication that the appeal of canned, one-size-fits-all, nationally syndicated talk may be wearing thin.
On top that, the market is saturated; way too many hosts, most not ready for prime.

Evenings is a tough slot for conservotalk. The top stations either air Savage live or Hannity on delay. And when live sports (baseball, basketball, etc.) is factored in, forget about it.

There's an AM station on the outskirts of my market that allegedly carries Severin. Never heard him there, since they're always doing sports in that timeslot.

Exactly in both cases. I believe he only had Boston, Phila., Detroit, St. Louis, and maybe one other city,
and WPHT "The Big Talker" in Phil. was pre-empting him for the Phillies a lot (unless they moved to a diff.
station...they were on WPHT, with Fri games on WIP, in '05; not sure about 06)

One of my affiliates tells me Severin will still feed nationally in the afternoons. I'd love to be told that is wrong.

Yes if Severin's show is to be exclusive to Boston, that means that info is wrong--unless they want him to do a Boston-content (and national too)-based show and tell stations, hey, you can also pick it up if you want...
Someone on a radio mailing list mentioned CBS/W1 prob. cost-cutting, wanted out of Severin deal, and GM
bought out last couple months (the deal was one year starting last Jan.)

The other market I was thinking of that carried Severin was Prov. RI I think (WPRO...
had him on weekends but I think later went to nightly..maybe picked him up to replace Savage who
went to HJJ)

Possibilities:

Severin does a local show on WTKK 3pm to 7pm....

His local show is syndicated in New England, like WRKO's Howie Carr in the same time slot.

Or...
He does a show for national syndication in the 7pm to 10pm slot (using material produced for the local show, as appropriate), like Thom Hartmann out of Portland (or Rush Limbaugh when he first entered syndication).

All games were on 1210 AM this season. Press Release: http://www.greatermedia.com/press/detail.php?ID=152

Thanks--tuned in tonight and did hear Phillies on 1210. I think the arrangement last year was something like
WIP doing Phillies on Fri due to a Sinatra show or something on 1210...

Supposedly Severin's manager claimed there were 50 stations carrying his CBS show. Prob. more like 5 or 6
that I know of. What becomes of that open hole?

WTKK Boston: well, Severin moves to exclusive show 3-7 pm with Michael Graham going to 7 pm, I guess.
Though it looks like Severin is "resting" while awaiting his new show, so tonight on WTKK at least they
played Laura Ingraham at 7 then re-ran programming from earlier in the day at 10 pm

WPRO Providence RI
Severin is still listed on their site, with Hannity following. Maybe they move Hannity to the 7p slot? Or
do a local host at 7?

WPHT Philadelphia
Severin still listed on their site...does Dom Giordano reclaim it? Giordano was filling in recently for
Severin...maybe as negotiations were going on, CBS and Greater Media!

Thought he was being run in Detroit, but not sure

KMOX St Louis--still listed on their site...replaced with...?

KRLD Dallas---still listed on their site...replaced with...?

WJFK Washington DC--ditto...

Station websites are the last place to check for programming changes.

True, but I was just kinda confirming what (major) stations had Severin--and kind of wondering with whom
they'll replace him. Often when a station makes a programming change they'll update the site after it happens
(certainly no "the so-and-so show will be dropped in two weeks...")--"when they get to it". One exception is
what WTKK is doing with Jay's show, openly announcing the new lineup as of 10/9...

It is confirmed now that Westwood will continue to syndicate Severin in his afternoon slot.

Hmm! Then why is Greater billing Jay's WTKK aft show as "Boston exclusive"?

Jay's site apparently has not been updated for a few weeks..."Tonight on Jay Severin Has Issues - Sep 7, 2006 IT'S THE GEEK SUPERBOWL: ELECTION TIME!
ALSO, PAT BUCHANAN ON PROFILING AND PROTECTING OUR BORDERS AND JAY RIFFS ON T.V. BABES..."

I don't know, I'm just reporting what I heard from my source at Westwood. It's double confirmed by an affiliate station.

I guess only time will tell for sure.

He got up to 48 markets, which does seem high, but most of those are in BFE. The only really good ones were the CBS O&Os that started him (WJFK/DC, KMOX/St Louis, WPHT/Philly, WTKK/Boston, etc)

that makes no sense, why buy him out if he continues on westwood? who would want him in afternoon drive anyway?

Could it be with an average of two and one half talk stations per market that feature right wing talk that we have approached a point of diminishing returns. Maybe Severin's failure in syndiction has something to do with this. The only new right wing talker who appears to be successful is Mark Levin, who is being syndicated by ABC and no doubt packaged with Hannity. The rest of the newbies like Severin, John Gibson, and Joe Scrarborough have all crashed and burned.

Didn't help Severin that he was being offered in same slot as Michael Savage, and some stations ran tape
delayed Hannity in early evening, AND pre-empted by Phillies in Philly, AND over-saturation of hosts,
AND the audience for political talk kinda goes down after 7 pm (except in some strong, locally oriented
stations like WBZ)...AND there were prob other reasons.
