BRW via BostonSportsMedia: Dave O'Brien to replace Trupiano

Conf call hasn't started yet, reports BSMW/Shots but it's said Glenn Gaffner will also have a part in a three-man-booth--well, actually there won't be more than two on at the same time...
Gaffner said to be Lucchino's choice, while O'Brien worked for Marlins under Henry ownership
It's 2:12 and the Big Show is still doing ads. Oops, now it's started.

The official Entercom press release is at http://www.bostonsportsmedia.com/shots

"Entercom Boston and the Boston Red Sox today announced the new radio broadcast team for the 2007 season. Veteran play by play man Joe Castiglione returns for his 25th season of calling Red Sox games, to be joined by Dave O’Brien, currently the play by play announcer for ESPN Monday Night Baseball and the World Series on Major League Baseball, and Glenn Geffner, former radio voice of the San Diego Padres."

Jesse Noyes of the Herald asked Wolfe why Trupiano wasn't re-hired, and asked Castiglione about
losing his former partner. (Via BostonSportsMedia):

Castiglione: "The only constant in broadcasting is the capacity for change. I've worked with many different broadcasters over the years."

"I have great respect for Jerry as well," Wolfe said. "Mike and I had numerous conversations and ultimately decided this was the direction we should take."

I don't care who it is, as long as they don't say "Quack, quack, quack!" Had to turn off the Celtics game tonight because "Cornbread" should not be on the radio. :-*

Castiglione is the problem.

Jerry "Waaay back" was pretty ridiculous, but he was better than Castiglione's ..."It's a long fly ball, deep into center field, it's go...,, HE CAUGHT IT< CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? HE CAUGHT IT..."

please. How many times has he got the hopes of Red Sox nation up because he's probably watching the TV instead of the action on the field. Sounds like he's got Satellite delay and reports 5 seconds after the event took place.

Next...

What in the name of God is up with that lame "quack quack??" Is Cedric out of junior high school? Out of diapers? This is a major market broadcast, not cable access in Elsmere, Kentucky. :-\

I like Castiglione and I liked Trupiano and we'll see how the new guys work out. And yes there are times,
and I've complained myself, when he makes it sound like a sure fire home run when it winds up getting
caught instead, but he's entertaining to listen to.

Raccoon, his voice is like glass on chalkboard. He's got that old-style Johnny Most twang, but he's no Johnny Most. Most had the growl to go with it. Castiglione sounds like a freight train running on a sidewalk.
We want that voice stuck in our memories. No thank you. Turn on the tv audio and watch the radio.

I don't mind it though and I enjoyed his banter with Trupiano, which I assume will continue with the new
broadcast partners. And I thought he sounded fine with "memories" like when he called the last out of the
'04 world series.

btw on the latest 12 + ratings, WAMG 890 shows up again...and I read on BostonSportsMediawatch that
the ratings for their local show, Felger, are just over twice as high as the station average (meaning the 12 +
average...the bit didn't specify if that "twice as high" rating was in 12 + or 25-54s)

it is pretty telling that Ken Coleman, Ned Martin and Curt Gowdy, the best voices, are long gone and from another time.

Castiglione and Trupiano couldn't come close to matching the demeanor, the professionalism and the sounds of the three mentioned above.

What a sin. What a shame.

Note to Jason Wolfe: What does Castiglione have on the Red Sox or RKO in order to keep a job without having the talent to back it up? It's a loong fly ball deep into center field...he caught it, can you believe it? He CAUGHT It, I thought it was a home run...(paraphrased). what a joke. spare us this year, please, we beg of you Jason...spare us!

btw Fybush confirms that while rumors had it defecting to the Yankees, WTIC in Hartford is staying with the
Sox network so fans in Western MA and other areas who have trouble picking up the Sox can get them there.
(Yanks new deal with WCBS of $14 mil. a yr for 5 yrs, while Red Sox are getting paid $20 mil/yr for 10 yrs
from RKO/Entercom)
And yup, that was the Celtics you heard on WBOQ the other night. I had heard that they were picking up
the Green team. Don't know if 'BOQ will continue to air the Sox now that they're on 'RKO but is this a sign
(affiliation with 'BOQ) that some areas on North Shore have trouble with the 680 signal at night? Well even
if not, local North Shore sponsors get a chance to advertise on the games on 104.9
