Bryan Simmons out at KOST

Just saw on Facebook that Bryan Simmons was let go today at KOST. Aren't they doing really well in the PPM? Why would they let him go? This is weird, gotta see if my contacts over there will know anything, but this being a Friday that may take a few days...

From what I heard, they did not renew his contract and he was told that they were going in a different direction. Pretty tight lipped over there, but if I had to guess I would expect wholesale changes at KOST within the next few weeks. Perhaps it won't even be called Coast anymore. I'm thinking a syndicated show like Donny Osmond or voice tracking. Of course there's the "jockless" scenario, they could do that. The question is, how in the world do you justify these changes given the incredible performance of the station and it's staff? I'm guessing that mornings will change soon too. From what I hear Andrew Jeffries is orchestrating these changes. He's apparently never heard of the line "if it ain't broke" don't fix it. He's tried to re-shape the station over the last few years with terrible jingles that are thankfully gone and lots of clutter. When ratings started to drop he apparently turned to the staff to find out why. They gave him an earful, some changes were made and the station rebounded. Soon people will say "Bryan who?" and he will be forgotten like all of the other dj's that came before him, it's human nature. Radio is in such a sad state, it's eats it's own without a care...

He will be on The Wave with Jhani Kaye by Monday afternoon. Not to worry Bryan fans.

Y'all are smokin' that dust again.

KOST is the number 3 station in the market.
There will not be wholesale changes.

"Different direction" is the showbiz term for "a direction other than the one in which you are employed by us".

...so many of us listened to Bryan Simmons at our desks at work, in the stores that we shop and on the way home from a crazy day at work; a So Cal icon. I would think that some radio station would nab him up in a heartbeat. This California Native has listened to him for 20+ years and this combined with programing changes; I think it's time to find a new station.

This make me flash back to the loss of Bruce, "The eye in the sky". I know it's not the same, but just like then, I feel like I have lost a friend.

Keep your chin up Bryan and I hope to hear you real soon. :-*

Thank you PenelopeLuvsPepe you are very kind. I suppose I shouldn't care, but I will be interested to know how this will all play out. Radio is a much different landscape than when I started. I am trying to remain positive, but it's hard knowing how tough it is to get a job now days. As far as I know there are some big changes expected at KOST. I know not what they are, but I've heard the rumors about new format captains and how the premium choice programming will be replacing many local talents across the nation for Clear Channel. My time at KOST has been great, and I really did not expect to be back after being let go in 2001, but thanks to Stella Prado I had another 6 years at KOST. Had I stayed at KBIG, I might have been out of the building sooner. For that I can't thank her enough. She's one of the best people to work for. I know it's strange for someone in my position to post a reply like this, but it's actually helping me get through it. To those who listened all of those years, thank you! Without you I wouldn't have been here as long as I was working for such a great radio station in one of America's finest cities. I also should thank Jhani Kaye for bringing me to LA. I originally hail from Northern California and perhaps it's time to look for work up there. I fear however that no matter where I go things will be the same. Again, thank you for your support all of these years.

Hello Bryan,
I am very toughed that you would take the time to personally reply to my message.

I was listening Friday on my way home from work and I did not hear you say good-bye to your listeners; so I an guessing you were not given the opportunity to do so. That's really bad. To spend so many years and so many listeners and they would take that away from you. It's sad when the profit margin is more important than people. I guess they did the same thing to Kim, et al.

Well, you have a very nice voice and mannerism about you and I'm am sure the airwaves will be filled with your essence in the very near future and I hope it is in the LA area; but if you do move to another marke, I wish you the best of luck.

Thank you for all of the years of making that drive just a little less stressful.
God Bless you an your family and Good Luck!
~Penelope

Clear Channel blows it again because this premium choice programing is so easily seen thru by the listener's. Bryan I'm sure you will land on your feet running while laughing at the fact that it was a lot easier to get thru this than you or a lot of other's thought you ever would. One door closes and another one opens! My goodness it so sad at the continuing pace at which radio is self-destructing everyday by getting rid of all the reason's people have to listen for any real entertainment value, which there is Clearly not any on some group owner's stations looking for a free ride in order to save a buck! God I'm so glad to be working in a business that values it's employee's and pay's better than a lot of of others do!

Sadly the reality for Bryan is that with two companies controlling almost all of the big English speaking stations, he has few places to go and since it's this way in most cities, it's even tougher to find a job.
He may have to wait it out a while and do something else is he's qualified for. I see from googling him he does voice over. That may be something he has to throw himself into, but even that doesn't always pay much, only for a chosen few it seems. A friend said she heard him in Las Vegas on a CC station doing promos for the iheart radio festival. If he is on those across the country it would seem that Clear Channel will have to scramble to get it all changed out with another voice. Some poor producer has a lot of work ahead this week. The way I see it, they lost a good man all to save a few bucks. Like RadioStarOne said, the listeners do see through it, but will they care? They did with Kim Amidon, and from what I hear, they cared a lot. But men don't always get that sympathy. Plus, there will likely NOT be any announcement of his departure like Mark did with Kim, so many will assume he's on vacation or something like that and he will just fade away and they'll accept whoever they put in there. Face it, most people don't listen to KOST for the personalities, they listen for the music. I did see some rather pointed posts on the KOST Facebook page yesterday, but by evening they were pulled down. CC is monitoring their FB pages to make sure no negative posts stay there long. One was pretty brutal, it supported Bryan and ripped CC pretty good. That was gone after just a few hours... Like Don Barrett said once, these people disappear with no explanation, even after 29 years the guy doesn't get to say goodbye to those who enjoyed him for all of that time...

It is VERY common in radio to never let the deejay say goodbye to their listeners, as the said deejay always finds out their "services are no longer needed" either after their airshift or when they walk through the door thinking it will be another day, but rather are told to "come into the manager's office."

Generally the reason for never letting the deejay say goodbye to listeners is the station/company/corporation doesn't want to lose the listeners nor have them follow the deejay to a new gig, and if the deejay isn't too happy about being let go station management doesn't want him/her expressing that on-the-air.

About the only times deejays have ever been allowed to say goodbye over-the-air, at least in the past, is when the deejay was going to another station in another market far away.

This is true. Traditionally, management made it a policy never to let the jock say farewell, especially if s/he was being terminated. There were exceptions, of course, when a jock was "moving far away" from the market and listeners couldn't follow him/her to the next frequency, as emailfailed stated.

But another reason was sabotage. Jocks who were terminated and allowed to go back on the air for one final show would sometimes resort to childish antics and sabotage the station either on-air or with the equipment. I can tell boatloads of stories of jocks who did that, costing the stations quite a bit of money in repairs and headaches.

It's just not good policy to keep a jock after he's been handed a pink slip to permit him one last show. Sins of the fathers.

I started listening to KOSt in the '80's... briefly stopped with they let Kim go in the mornings ... but still listened at Christmas and to Bryan in the mornings...

In the fantasy world it would be great if everyone moved over to the Wave ... however life is what it is...

You had a great run Bryan .. I wish you the best ... KOST is no more to me ... after listening for 20 years it's time for me to just let it go .. it's not like how it used to be .. but then again nothing is in life.

You will be fine and land on your feet because you have a strong support/fan base.

Best of luck to you and yours and I will be listening to wherever you land ...

I think Angelbec speaks for many - thousands in fact.

Why anyone would put stress on a goose that consistently lays golden eggs is a mystery.

Somewhere this morning though, Jhani is smiling.

Just posted some info on the Kari Steel thread that actually pertains to this thread more. I won't re post, but what I've found out in the last few days is scarey...

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. I would like to thank angelbec and everyone else who has thrown support my way this week. When I came to Los Angeles I had mainly worked AOR, and Top 40, more Top 40, as well as Oldies and even News anchoring. AC was a new thing for me and I was hoping to stay for a couple of years. I had never spent more than 2 & a half years anywhere and if you told me that I would be with one station so long I would have laughed at you. But stay I did thanks to fine programmers like Jhani Kaye, Stella Prado and Chachi Denis. I think I had a good run and I believe I can hold my head high. I truly appreciate everything that has been said in my favor. Now I want to be positive and move forward.

Thank you again, I've had so many good thoughts from so many great people and it's helped me cope more than anyone could know.

Hope to be heard again on the air someday, and if that happens, please call and let me properly thank you.

All the best,

Bryan Simmons

Hello all!
I'm extremely shocked at what happened there to Bryan Simmons at KOST. We all know he will be scooped up by another station. What station would you like to hear Bryan Simmons on? 94.7 The WAVE? How about Playlist 92.7?? I know Playlist is basically playing the same music as KOST except, I think they go a little deeper into the 80's then KOST but, he would bring personality to the station. What are your thoughts???
Nick

I listen to Kim on Kost and the other DJ's who arrived there. Wherever Brian lands I will listen. I am old school radio. I remember listening to the Real Don Steele and Charlie Tuna on 93 KHJ ... I listen to the radio because of the DJ's not necessarily because of the music ...

Nick, you do realize that there are no DJs on 92.7? When they were JILL-FM they had one DJ Bill Gardner for morning drive a few years ago. He was on for just a few months. Amaturo is chhhhhheeeeeap!! As long as they have a few happy listeners and can still sell spots, they will stick with the no DJ policy.

And in time KOST may have no deejays either as Clear Channel continues to put distance between the Jhani Kaye KOST and what they 'think" an AC should sound like. Ted, Mark & Karen all come from the Kaye days, wonder how long they've got left?
