Bud Ballou at Channel 9 in Syracuse

Fenway, thanks so much for posting the piece on Bud Ballou. I grew up in Central NY and watched him on Colorful Channel 9 and listened to him til the sun went down on WNDR -couldn't get WOLF in New Hartford. He was a major influence on me and my broadcast career, for better or worse. I e-mailed the piece to many people in the biz and not in the biz and & put the it on my Facebook page. The response has been incredible. I guess a lot of people remember watching him on Colorful Channel 9 and listening to "the Idiot Show For Night People". It was a big part of our youth. He was known to be a great guy, which adds to the sadness that he died at such a young age. Makes you wonder what he could have accomplished.

Bud and I became friends in Boston and we went to a few Bruins games together.

Dale Dorman (WOLF) and Bud were close and Dale is convinced Bud would have had a bigger career in Boston than he did.

He was only 34.

Once he got to WKBW in Buffalo, Bud Ballou beecame a big star all over western NY--he even had a big following in Rochester. His cousin was a high school classmate of mine, and everyone was asking him about Bud all the time (WKBW had become the "cool" station to listen to, even more so than WBBF).

Bud probably would have moved on from Boston to become a major star on WABC or Z100, and would probably be a big part of the WCBS=FM lineup in NYC, just like Bob Shannon, if he hadn't passed away far, far too soon.

Interesting also to see Rod Wood reminiscing about Bud Ballou from his position at the Channel 9 anchor desk--Rod is one of the good guys of the business (had the pleasure of working for him at WHEN-AM back in the 70s) and deserves his stature as a true Central New York icon today.
