Bud Ford out

His attitude caught up with him. What do they call that? Wait for it... Karma... Don't be a dick Bud!

Worked with him at a remote a few months ago. He came across like an "I know-it-all" radio person. Not the least bit nice or congenial. At the time, I thought his type of radio "professional" is one of the many things wrong with radio today. I hate to see him out of a job, but can't help thinking it was a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Remember Captain Queeg in The Caine Mutiny? Very sad for him and for radio. And Nashville still has a country station that stinks.

If Ford was as big of an ass is some of you indicate, sounds like he got what he deserved. When I was in radio, I worked with several of the "Bud Ford" type. Sad!

I know Bud personally. He is not an ass. He just has a different personality. I am not here to defend him, just letting you know he is not an ass. No matter what you say, he took a station that the ratings were low... and at least put them on the map. It is sad when anyone loses their job... but he did very well with what he was given.

He sounded on-air a lot like Eddie Fox, although Eddie definitely had more personality. The "This Bud's for You" and the pouring beer sound got old pretty quick. A lot of sign-offs can be played indefinitely without becoming grating but that was not one of them.

I don't know what the deal was with his departure but hope everything works out for the best for him and for 'KDF.

See where Bud Ford is out as P.D of WKDF. Whats up on 2nd Ave.?

What's the matter with you people? It's getting close to 6 hours since this was posted, and no one's yet mentioned that KDF must be going back to ROCK!

Gee, maybe someone ought to come up with something different for once, like the Zone's moving to 103.3 and 104.5's going True Oldies with Marino in the morning. Nah, that would be a sucker punch. Let's just say sports'll take over both frequencies. We DO need another sports station here, don't we?

The Ads say they are staying Country:
WKDF - THE NATION'S BEST COUNTRY PROGRAMMER
We are looking for the nation's best country programmer who wants to win big in the nation's best country market.

103 WKDF, a division of Citadel Broadcasting, is looking for the nation's most creative and driven program director. You must have a passion for good radio, specifically good country radio that is in tune with the community it serves: Music City USA.

Most important: your ability to define a plan, set a course for yourself, our airstaff and promotions teams – then follow that plan, sell it to everyone, and refine it as the marketplace changes.

You must have a proven track record of excellence in a competitive country marketplace. Good organization and coaching skills are a must. Ability to work well with others and be a leader in the building are imperative.

Our next program director must possess a working knowledge of MusicMaster. Experience with Scotts is a plus.

We've got the nation's best team in place ready to be led by you. If you can define the goals, work your plan 24-7, coach our people to reach the goals, be a good communicator with our sales and promotional teams, and know who, what, when, where, why we can be number one, we want you.

Mail your resume and a cover letter outlining why you are preeminently qualified to be our next leader and your plan for making us #1 to:

Human Resources
103 WKDF
506 2nd Ave South
Nashville, TN 37210

Materials must be submitted by June 13.

AFTERNOON DRIVE - WKDF
103 WKDF, Nashville’s home for 103 Minute Music Marathons and the Tennessee Titans, is looking for our next afternoon drive star.

As the man or woman who will drive the Music City home each afternoon, you must possess a love of country music, a passion for being involved and active in the community, as well as a true excitement about meeting, talking with, and interacting with the audience.

Your shift should be full of personality and content that relates to the members of our core audience – a audience that is on the way home after a long day at work. We’re not looking for a comedian or the king of the one-liner. We want the person who is a true communicator.

And most of all: we want the ability to have fun, make people laugh, talk about our exciting station events and contests, while not stopping the music. If you have that special ability to say a lot and make a big impact in a short period of time, here’s your chance.

Mail your aircheck, resume and a cover letter selling yourself as our next afternoon drive personality to:
Human Resources
103 WKDF
506 2nd Ave South
Nashville, TN 37210

Materials must be submitted by June 27, 2008.
No phone calls and No E-mail’s please.

Bud is a like him or hate him kind of guy, there is no in between. I happen to like him, respect him as a programmer and am saddened that this has happened. I think he just got bogged down in the menusha (msp?) that is Citadel/ Nashville. I have to wonder if DK has a clue about what's actually going on there, they are so trigger happy, it's ridiculous. Some times things can be worked out, jobs can change, people could work together.......but no, they just fire 'em and move on. "off with their heads!" Except for a few that have been there since the inception of radio, ie: Bill Johns, Steve Komisar, Cindy Francis. MMMMMhhhhhhh, maybe that's what's wrong, I guess if you have been doing something the same way for 30 years, and someone keeps trying to change it, you would certainly have to put a stop to that.

Okay, I will stop now, in all Bud's a good guy, and I hope he gets a good gig.

side bar: Radio is like a mother that eats her own children!

I'm not local so forgive my ignorance. What has been the problem with WKDF and WSM never making traction and never catching up with WSIX in the last several books. Is it a Cumulus and Citadel thing? A PD thing? Why haven't they been successful?

It's the erosion that's happening all across the country - more and more of the young people are tired of the FM and are listening to the AM. And, they are not the type to fill out ratings books, either! It's a clandestine movement to the days of ole. That's why more and more AM's are playing music again!!

I'm totally kidding - I've been hitting the AM (Arbor Mist) too much.

WSIX is the heritage station here for FM Country (We have forgiven them for the Metropolitan Country phase by now). WSM was a lite fm station (SM95 - and not too shabby on that format!) and WKDF was rock (and should have stayed that way - hindsight is 20/20).

Actually, both stations are quite competitive eventhough they may not appear that way. Both WSM and WKDF have made great advances in the last couple of years and they are performing quite well considering the competition here. A lot of the success at WSIX has to do with Gerry House in the mornings who attracts people in across formats. They start the day at the top of the heap and the momentum carries them quite well. The station has a lot of good talent all day long and does well in the young demo for country. They also do quite well on XM.

WKDF sees a nice bump when the Titans are playing but a lot of people still have a hard time with the transition they made from rock to country.

I find myself listening to all three stations and the programming is unique at each. This is a good time for country radio in Nashville.

Yorkie, good post I was just thinking of the Metropolitian Country commericials the other day and WSIX-FM playing what I called at the time Funeral Home Country. Could we not get enough of the Ray Condiff singers preforming "Thank God I'm a Country Boy"? And do you remember the awful extremely serious and boring announcing style, back announcing about 3 songs or more and then announcing what is ahead for the next 3 or more songs. The TV commericials showed a top hat, white gloves and a cain with a disticitive voice (I believe Jim Kent) calmly almost to the point of putting you to sleep with only 2 words saying "Metropolitian Country WSIX-FM".

Jim Kent was one of the best announcers to ever grace Nashville and he was a gracious man as well. I knew him for years and he didnt have the massive ego that many have in broadcasting.

don't forget the "Cream of Country" billboards...looked like Campbell's Soup cans (on purpose). awful...but successful for many years.
I have a few airchecks of legal IDs from this time period...truly unbelievable.
"a service of General Electric Broadcasting (long pause) stereo 98...WSIX-FM Nashville" approx :10 seconds.

I have lived here for 16 years (since 1992) and during the time I have lived here, KDF was never a "rock" station. ::) Oh, they pretended to be, but in reality, they had not been a rocker since at least the '70s!

Why don't we start a rumor that not only is 'KDF going rock, but that Carl P. is coming back to do mornings and also be the PD to revive the once great rock giant? ;D

Good idea, EofN . Here goes --- I heard the exact same rumor directly from Bill Buntin. Let's celebrate the return of KDF with a little AM
flip of WMRO (Still need Disco on Saturday Nights and Preachers on Sunday, though.) Who is Carl P? Does he own property in Sumner County?
Didn't he work at 92-Q back in the late 1800's with Scott and Romer? :-*

By the way, Yorkie, your AM = Arbor Mist comment is the funniest so far in 2008! Good stuff.

Good point and it looks like no, DK has no clue.
