Veterans Day was Bud's last day at 1470 WLAM.
There was a link to a story in the Nov.12 Sun-Journal but it's no longer available.Bud is 73 and has been in Portland radio for about 40 years, most of it doing mornings at WPOR.

Hats off to our bud Bud and may he enjoy his retirement! Thanks for many years of service! Certainly a legend!

**Not to be the drunken buffoon that I can sometimes be, and not to inject some negativity into what should be a nice tribue thread, but with Nassau owning WLAM, maybe "retirement" should be in quotes, if you get my drift?

'Tis the season to trim payroll, fa-la-la-la-la... sing it with me!

EDIT: Of course, congratulations to Bud for his many years at WPOR, WLAM A/F (the old one) & WZOU, and WLAM (the new one). How could I forget! Now, to the rant:

With Bud Sawyer out, will Nassau keep WLAM?

Bud was the only talent on 1470 AM, and considering that WLAM is the underdog standards station in Portland (to 1490/1400 The Bay), one would think that their odds would be slim. To boot, WLAM's demographics are not exactly prime, and the signal in Portland is considerably lacking.

Perhaps Nassau would use 1470 as an ESPN Radio station targetting L-A? As many know, Nassau was going to put ESPN on 870 but then decided to stick with AAR.
Edited by JustinT on 11/13/05 05:41 AM.

Re: What's next for WLAM? SUN-JOURNAL SAYS IT WILL GO TO ESPN

According to an accompaning (but not discussed here) Sun-Journal article, WLAM-1470 will go ESPN Sport on December 6th. However the article was centered more on the decision to end the French weekend show done by a local lady at the same time as the format switch. However, as mentioned here, Nassau HAS announced WLVP-870 would go to ESPN, but it didn't happen. - WLAM-1470 has scored impressively in the ratings, and Nassau sure does know how to program music formats such as WLAM-1470, and their Franks... however, programming for adults over 45 (WLAM-1470) does not bring in the cash.

Wow. I'm psychic!

and in the holiday spirit, let us raise a glass to Bud! a glass of
something cold... beechwood aged... hmmmmmm... wonder what sort of
libation we could use to toast Bud?

after all, Bud did what many of aspire to do but often fall short:
spend many years in one place, raise a family (and do one wicked swell
job of it!) and still have some time left to enjoy some time that doesn't
involve radio.

however: i've often felt that Bud would retire when they pry the microphone
from his fingers, if you get my drift.

for all you do, Bud, this one's for you! (insert favorite beverage here and
drink up!)

;-)

73's, fair winds and following seas, Wellington!

I have a copy of a Boston Globe TV supplement for the week of April 17th-23rd, 1960 that also lists programs on some of Boston's radio stations that week.

According to that listing, Bud Sawyer (I assume the same one who just retired) was the morning man on the then-WORL-950 in Boston.
