Buddy is at the point of being Unlistenable

There are some days when Buddy conducts a very good show, he has excellent interview skills when uses them. He also has a vast knowledge of politics, and how to run a city. He was a tremendous Mayor. He sacrificed his personal life to be a 24 hour a day Mayor, but he did it flawlessly. That being said, when he decides to spew his venum toward people who say anything negative toward him, he becomes an unfair animal. His latest target Esserman maybe an egomaniac and a jerk, but Buddy is posessed when on his rampage. He blames Esserman for everything that happens in the city, which is ridiculous. If a gun goes off somewhere, it's Esserman's fault. He has the audacity to blame Esserman for the death of Detective Allen, and screams about a cop having answers to the police exam in advance. Does he have amnesia? It seems to me that during Plunder Dome Barney Prignano admitted to giving out the exams to friends. Why was it okay then? Yes, radios have many stations, but it's a shame that the days when Buddy is good, are so few and far between. This seems to be a common opinion among people I know. Of course WKND will say we are all wrong. Anyone want to take odds on that one?

This post has a potential to steer away from radio and straight into politics. So before that happens.

Buddy was Mayor Of Providence for many years. You either like him or not.

David C. The current Mayor Of Providence. Has done a a few things to upset residents (Kids stuck on buses for 8hrs.)
Providence Police Chief having a very sweet ($$) contract. So you either like him or not.

Getting back to Buddy on the radio. He can talk about anything & everything. Its talk radio.

If you're not a fan of his. Or you find what he says offensive, talk with his PD. And complain to his sponsors.

To be honest with you Sally, I think that Buddy has been a little off when I have heard him this week. While the exam thing w/ Prignano happened on his watch, there have been a number of things with Esserman that not only Buddy; but Dan & JD have been railing against and talking about for over a year: Crime statistics changes, the police exam, why it took him until 9pm to call the school operations manager on the snow night to ask him if the school dept needed help (and yet found the time to get to Gold's Gym for a workout while the city was crippled); which are all good talk subjects. I got shouted down a number of times when all of this stuff has gone on before that too much time has been spent talking about the subjects or that they were old news, yet there seems to be each and every week new or further info coming out on these subjects....when Helen talks about the subjects, it isn't scorned, yet when anyone at WPRO does, everyone with a grudge on this board comes out and rails against them for being tired or behind the times and bringing up old news....

This is not about WPRO or Esserman or Ciciline. The topic is that Buddy has become a terrible talk host. He is a 3 hour vendetta almost every day about anyone who makes a comment about him. Whether that be Esserman, Mark Patinkin, Bakst, it doesn't matter. He repeats the same stories, "witty" lines, ad nauseum. WPRO owns the local talk market and does a fine job of it. My point was that talk listeners who were excited for Buddy's return to talk radio continue to be dissappointed and bored with the horrible product that is coming out of Buddy's show on a daily basis. People I know who worked for Buddy, and were loyal to him, people in the advertising business, and the general public are tired of his bitterness. It's like he sat in that cell for five years and still thinks there was no reason for him to be sent there.

I don't think anyone on this board has a grudge against WPRO. Perhaps you just take it a little to personal because you have friends who work in the building. You can relax Ted. You don't need to have this ongoing loyalty towards WPRO. They don't do a damn thing for you anymore. Now you are just a regular listener like the rest of us.

The main reason Buddy was hired was because they thought the controversy would bring in a boat load of new listeners. Does anybody with a ratings book care to comment on the difference in ratings TODAY compared to what that time slot got before Buddy was hired? I'm willing to bet that ratings did not go up. As a matter of fact I bet they went down! Can someone please confirm? Thank you in advance.

The Winter book should be out this week, Buddy did have a good book in the Fall which should not be a surprise to anyone. There was a ton of curiosity and anticipation for his return to Providence.

My prediction is that Buddy will see some erosion in the new book. He and WPRO do get a bonus because they have NO serious talk competition. You must remember Buddy is getting old. He is not as sharp as he was when he was Mayor. He often looses his place, stumbles frequently and repeats himself way too often. Plus, management there has not even seemed to try and train him on the most basic talk radio fundamentals. The guy has trouble following the format. I still don't understand the human laughtrack they put in the studio with him. Ron should have his own show. Dan had "Beacon Mutual" and Buddy has "Dean Esserman". Anytime I hear those two names I go to XM.

The only winner here is Buddy and GOOD for him. He gets over 200K from Citadel, plus perks. I hear he gets another 150K from TV and that takes him 40 minutes a week. Plus, he has the relative that drives him around to "meatball Monday". With radio national revenue way off, add in a soft economy locally and there is no way WPRO is getting the ROI needed to justify this spending

Buddy's audience will continue to loose market share. His audience will continue to skew old. He will not be on the radio in 2010. Plus he will be up 30 pounds by September 1.

The man is 67 years old so you can't expect him to be as sharp as those in their 30's and 40's. He has been the prime mover in the "get Cicilline" agenda. A year ago Cicciline was looked on as one of the Top 3 serious contenders for Governor.
Now, with police scandal after school scandal after police scandal after Parks Dept. scandal, etc., with Simmons's shady RI Foundation and pension deals exposed, with his brother facing federal corruption trial next month involving corrupt cops, with the unfunded pension liability soaring over $700 million and still growing if you mention him for Governor to people they laugh and roll their eyes. Cicilline for Governor has become a bad joke.
Buddy is responsible for a lot of that. Anyone who has a speck of dirt on this administration knows who to call-and that it will be used.

I think Buddy is 71.

I agree with you Sally. With your post. People in R.I. will still listen to him I think because people here like Smooth Talkers. They like being BS - d. You know how most of the state loves the Clintons and Kennedys? Like Mrs Clinton can get caught making up a crazy story about Bosina and Rhode Islanders love it! In my minds eye, I've realized Rhode Islanders have a love affair going on , with Con Artists, Liars, Scammers, and anyone who can make a 'score'. You know how people watched the Soprano's and loved 'Tony'? Even though Tony Soprano was a Bad fellow. It's really the same thing.
Buddy may be 'unlistenable' to some, but to most Rhode Islanders, he's right up their 'ally'.

Then, we really are hopeless, aren't we? I can't argue with anything quoted here. The part about 'most R.I.ers', is very true, in my life's experience.
R.I.ers LOVE Charlatans... LOVE them. Can't get enough of them. R.I.ers ADMIRE, ( some secretly) those who 'get away' or 'scheme' to get the TWO pensions,
the 'No Show job', the 'fix' of a problem. You can be a person CONVICTED of several crimes and go out and attempt to DESTROY another person based ONLY on 'innuendo'. I suppose Buddy Cianci is chiefly whom I'm describing, BUT NOT SOLELY! When I hear Cianci ridiculing 'Police' and F.B.I. and the U.S. Attorney and most of his listeners siding with and believing him, well, I KNOW R.I. is as good as DEAD. I've noticed Dan Yorke and Matt Allen and EVEN John Depetro are somewhat careful about throwing innuendo out, without vetting their stories, especially Yorke and Allen. Thats respectable talk radio. I think the only thing to stop Cianci from his reckless slanders, is for one of the Police, city workers, or private citizens Cianci goes after to SUE him personally. And make the Media well aware of it.
Don't misunderstand what Im saying please! If Cianci has good solid evidence of a scandal, or whatever , GREAT! Unfortunately, for the most part, Cianci is simply flinging MUD and seeing if it sticks. Listen to Cianci long enough and you hear a man who is HATEFUL of the Police and most other Law organizations. Remember, Cianci is an EX CON. A person who served 4 years in prison. Nows he's MR Squeaky Clean vangard of Law Enforcement?? Like I said, R.I.ers LIKE that just fine.. Don't you??

As much as certain people in this forum would like to see me move out of this state, Trust me when I tell you that nobody wants to leave this pit more than I do. It's effen horrible here and it's only getting worse. I'm not just talking about the corrupt politicians or the failing financial situation. But even the people in general are unpleasant and miserable.

I've been to plenty of other places where you feel warmth when you walk into a store or whenever you go out in public. Smiling friendly faces and pleasant attitudes prevail. But in Rhode Island, nine times out of 10 you end up with some creepy cashier who speaks in a monotone like a robot and can't even crack a smile if his or her life depended on it. Living in this state is like living among the walking dead. There is barely a glimmer of happiness among anybody who lives here. I've seen exceptions, but they are way to far and few between.

I've got my eyes set on someplace warm where people arn't so angry. Everyone likes to hold out hope that Rhode Island will change. Unfortunately by the time any change happens, all of us will have stopped breathing by then. I'm determined to not waste much more time here than I have to.

You think there are only 5 or 6 people who don't like Buddy's show? My God.... I've finally come across a person who's more delusional than wknd92.

John, it didn't even take you a week to break the promise...why am I not surprised?

I thought my promise was not to argue with you anymore. Did I remember incorrectly? If so I apologize.

read my post a little better bro.... i believe i said the 5-6 PEOPLE HERE that didnt like him..... so before you try making a fool outta me or someone else.... read the post a little better please.... i mean gimme a break guy.... im sure in the real world there are more than 6 people who dont like him....... but it will take more than that to warrent a change.... is that any clearer for you... i quoted my last post so u could find it easier

xtreme, First I want to say, I'm just giving you an analysis of Buddy 's show based on Sally's topic and what I've heard of his show. Do you disagree with anything I've written? If you do, could you tell me why? By the way, sometimes Buddy is very interesting to listen to and I have written he is popular. It's the things I wrote in my earlier post that I stand by . Those are the things I see as 'unlistenable'.

Not trying to get on your case bro. But you actually said "if i had to guess the only ones who dont like buddy are the 5 to 6 people here who dont like him."

I might not be an expert on interpretation, but read that over again a few times to yourself. It sure looks like you said that the only people who don't like Buddy are 5 or 6 people here. But the rest of the world loves him! That's the way I see what you wrote.

Don't worry about it. You already cleared it up.

The REAL questions that are being asked by 'the people who matter' on the trail probably have little to do with Buddy's day-to-day performance on-air, but rather:

* Does the math add up now?
* Will the math still add up...one book...two books...three or four books from now?
* Will this Cianci expenditure end up becoming one we'd like to forget?

As they say on the soaps......:"Join us again tomorrow".
