Buffalo 12+ Winter '10

Look who's on top. Winter '10 Persons 12+ at Radio-Info. That WBEN and WGR didn't soar with Tea Party and the Sabres games and sports talk is something of a surprise. Sure, it's 12+ and virtually meaningless, but it gives posters something to chew on. Speculate at will, but please, no wagering.

Intro: Thanks Element 9 for the info. (dang, I even hit the post - whatever song it was)

Wagering? ROFL !!
Back in the day...individual stations competed for ratings. Today - 3 groups compete....so let's look.

Regent: Postions 1,3,4 & 10
Entercom: Postions 2,5,8 & 9
Citidel: Postions 6 & 7

There you have it. The Top 10 stations 12+ in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Market...from a revenue position. Yup, you can break it down by demo, but it DOESN'T matter anymore. Ratings = Revenue (last I heard about broadcasting).
Top 10...go into the big pot of group revenues, by group. Nuff said.

Wonder why radio isn't fun anymore?

My soapbox is foaming up...but That's all! ;D

Sorry, but even though Radio-Info somehow gave WEDG to Entercom, it ain't so. WEDG belongs to Citadel, so the real line-up is"

Entercom: Postions 2,5 & 9
Citadel: Postions 6, 7 & 8

The real money is in the demos. WYRK is a big daddy, and splits both male & female numbers. 'HTT leans a bit female, but still has decent male numbers.

'BLK has its own audience, and services it nicely.

'BEN, 97-Rock, and WEDG skew heavily male, with 'BEN mostly 50+.

'JYE, Star, and Kiss lean heavily female.

FYI, fellow posters. Ratings DO NOT =revenue. It did in 1985, it does not now.
But we'd still rather have a 5 than a 2.5, wouldn't we ;) and a 10 trumps a 9.5 share. If nothing else, good ratings (in the target demo) make it easier for sales folks to "finesse" the buy... to say nothing of programmers' and jocks bragging rights. Then again, given the ridiculous rates Arbitron charges for its superior product... Which begs the question, will there come a time when ratings are no longer relevant?

Damn radio jocks (Pastrick)!! Take the thunder from us programmers!! ;D If I were a Carpenter...(Not Richard... Dion), I'd say you hit that nail on the head. But since I'm not a Carpenter...

I believe in the present situation it is ALL bragging rights (regardless). The sales team has the bigger battle of "why radio - no one listens"! And many threads have addressed this - without ever saying it! A 5 share of 100 people means Diddly (not Bo). Point being...Jim...I think you right...ratings don't matter when the "real business world" is becoming fully aware of the radio dilemma (meaning listenership).

Again we revert back to "the Industry". Put aside the competition among thyself, and address the bigger issue - Radio Broadcasting.

That's all! (BTW - Jim...keep swinging that hammer!!)

Jim, we have actually been going in that direction of "ratings are no longer relevant" for a while. First off, ratings are not an exact science, by far. If a station is compelling, with a market exclusive format, and great community buzz, then everyone in the market will know it is a good station (with the exception of out of town agencies, which are becoming less relevant).

Revenue is driven by relationships, and results, and most importantly, ideas!. Ratings have nothing to do with those 2 things. Many highly rated stations like BLK, JYE are not huge revenue drivers. If is were solely based on ratings, they would be market leading revenue. The good operators know it goes much further than ratings, especially when we know have so many choices in new technology for entertainment.
