Buffalo and Rochester now embargoed by Arbitron?

Saw this at the end of an e-mail from All Access.com. This seems to be a new development.

"Embargoed by ARBITRON on WEDNESDAY: BUFFALO, ROCHESTER, NY, and GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG."

After registering about a one-share the last few trends, WBEN's FM simulcast pulled a goose egg this time.

How's that hopey changey thing workin' out for ya 'BEN?

Ouch. BTW, the ratings are available here on Radio-Info as well.

Could Arbitron be combining 107.7's ratings into WBEN's number? If you notice, WBEN had a big month-to-month jump from 7.2 to 8.5. I don't know what would account for such a disparity. And I can't imagine 107.7 would have a zero rating with the massive promotion WBEN gives it. I'm only speculating here, and wonder if those of you who are more tuned into Arbitron might be able to weigh in on this.

Good observation, Phil. Something's amiss here. Even when the 107.7 switched from The Bear to The Wave, the ratings didn't drop to 0. Didn't happen when 97 switched from AOR to AC, either. (Neither format switch was a rating success, BTW.) Could be that diary holders wrote "WBEN" but didn't check the FM box? It's been a while, but IIRC, about 320-350 diaries are distributed per trend period. Not one WBEN listener-diary keeper wrote down 107.7? All the former Lake listening evaporated in a three month period? A trend is a three month rolling average. The formula to calculate/extrapolate one month's listening involves multiplication and subtraction. To come up with a "0" there must be three months of "0" listening. Something's wacky here. You'd think WLKK would get at least a .1 or .2, wouldn't you? Maybe P1 listeners are content to listen to WBEN on AM. Maybe listeners don't get the "WBEN on FM" positioning. Is this a case of programming or accounting? Or is it a matter of "younger listeners" that Entercom hopes to reach by putting the product of FM getting what they need elsewhere? Lots of questions here. On the lighter side, at least for one trend, KB isn't the low man on the Entercom Buffalo totem pole.

Knowing zero about diary measurement in 2011...I do know PPM no longer distinguishes where the listening is coming from - AM or FM - in a simulcast. Is it possible the same applies to the diary?

Last I saw an Arbitron diary Chas, each page had an "FM" check box.

Why buy a hot dog at Salvatore's when you know you can get a good dog at Ted's? Why listen to WBEN on a weak, spotty 107.7 FM signal when the 930 AM signal is strong? This trend is not being taken lightly at Corporate Parkway or Bala Cynwyd. The results might be different had Entercom decided to simulcast WGR on FM. Could the Lake resurface?

Makes me wonder what's going on in Syracuse & Albany with Clear Channel's similcasts of their newstalkers WSYR & WGY.
Personally, I think WSYR 570 gets out a lot better than their FM. WGY may be a different situation. They said the FM would get into office buildings better. That may be true. There are a lot of office buildings in Albany.

There's a big difference between how a lower-power FM located in the metro will provide service as opposed to a higher-power FM located well outside the metro. In short, The Lake ain't a real "office building penetrator" in either Buffalo or Rochester.

I think that E9's onto something. Using 107.7 to fill in the gaps in WGR's nightime coverage might be a much better use of the frequency.

I suspect that WBEN will put the Sabres games on 107.7 once the season gets cranked up. That should raise the ratings there a little. How Arbitron will measure that if a simulcast truly credits all listening to one station has yet to be determined.

But, what happens if they simulcast the Sabres games on 107.7? Then it's not a 100% simulcast.

In my original post questioning the FM ratings, I attributed the possibility for the 107.7 disparity to "accounting," by which I meant Arbitron's methodology. Thanks to Mike Doyle for clarifying the matter. Last season, the Sabres playoff games were a literal ménage à trois, airing on 930 and 107.7 as well as 550. I'd suspect WBEN would receive credit for the 107.7 diary mentions because 930 and 107.7 are listed as the simulcast combo in the stations' profile report to Arbitron, whereas WGR would get credit only for diary mentions of WGR or 550. Where's Dave Eduardo. Is Dave Eduardo on the phone? I want a concerted effort...
