Buffalo Bills Football in NEPA?

According to an article in the business journal Business First of Buffalo, Citadel is considering broadcasting Buffalo Bills games in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area, as well as Harrisburg.

Is that really a good idea? I'm a Bills fan, having grown up in WNY, but I'm also a native of W-B and have traveled to the area quite frequently in the past 30+ years. I've never seen anyone sporting a Bills logo; it's mostly Eagles, and if folks do follow an AFC team, it's overwhelmingly Steelers.

I am guessing its another way of buttering up the Bills for renewing the contract. They would probably run it on WARM with somebody flipping it on before and off after the game with nobody at the board in between because they wouldn't actually try selling it, unless they get the folks that "buy on WARM based on what WARM once was" ala A.J. Chevrolet, etc.

And on a side note. Has anybody listened to WARM lately??? It is probably worse sounding than when we last mentioned it recently. If it was a horse, it would have been shot by now.

What stations up this way air Eagles, Giants, and/or Jets games? Also, do any stations air Steelers games in NEPA? Having lived in northeast PA for a short time, I should know this, but I simply don't!

Giants or Jets??????? You're kidding, right? I believe you can get The Fan in certain areas of NEPA, but I don't know if they carry those games. The Eagles are on 97.9X---which at first I thought was an incredibly stupid idea, but it's worked very very well for them. Last I heard, the Steelers were on WARM, but that was two years agon

This has got to be one of Citadel's goofiest moves ever!! I come from Upstate NY and the Bills don't play well outside of far western NY. Even in Upstate communities like Syracuse or Binghamton it's much more likely that you'll hear the Giants before someone carries the Bills. So to put the Bills on WB & Harrisburg is really foolish. It's most likely that they've told the Citadel GM's in Syracuse, Ithaca, Binghamton, WB & Harrisburg that they are GOING to air the Bills on one of their cluster stations. Same type of thing when they forced the Yankees on WB & Binghamton & Ithaca.

Isn't this the same Citadel that Simulcasted an out of market country station? LOL

Eagles were on WILK...Not sure if that holds true now... Giants haven't been on since they were on WICK about two or three years ago and nobody has the jets that I'm aware of. Steelers were on WARM, then 97.9X, then 93.7 if I remember correctly. Not sure if they are still running them.

A little history here. The Eagles ran on TeleMedia and were set to run on Citadel when Gerald Getz of KRZ pulled a power play. At the time, WARM was carrying the Phillies and in the month of September carried the Phillies, pre empting the Eagles. Getz supposedly went to the Eagles and within a few days the Eagles were on FM 102 owned by the KRZ group.
Holding their hands over their doopaws, the WARM programming staff came up with the idea of running the Steelers. The Eagles billed a respectable amount on WARM but the sales people had to go out and sell a team, the Steelers that were a lot like the old WARM. People remembered them for what they were, not what they were when we sold them. We had this promotion where if you bought a Golden Steelers package, you got a hooded black and gold Steelers stadium coat. There actually was one client who just wanted to buy a couple of jackets and forego the air time.
When WARM started to really die, Citadel put the Steelers on the X with the theory being that since it is a hard rock station, and men like hard rock, then they'd like football. There was little or no ad revenue to speakof.
At the time we were selling the Steelers (1998 through 2000 on WARM) the Eagles were doing well on 102FM and WICK was running the New York Giants.
The thought of the Bills is just another "reach"by a Citadel programming staff that that remains clueless. Only the faces and names change. At least they are consistent in their history of stupidity as it relates to an audience. They never cease to let me down!!!!

I know last year 860 in Mt Pocono was broadcasting both the Jets & Giants. There are quite a few New York/New Jersey transplants in the area now.

Now that was a very wise programming move on their part. With
New Yorkers, transplanted or otherwise taking sides on Jets vs
Giants, here was a station that gave the fans both. Brilliant.

Why are we getting so worked up over this? I worked for an organization that did a survey a few years ago. It's the Eagles on top, followed by the Steelers, Giants, and Cowboys all fairly close together. I'd rather hear a Bills game than some of the weekend filler out there.

to the Fantasy Football geeks. By the way, an episode
of that is chronicled in my book, "A Radio Story/We
Wish Well In Your Future Endeavors".

Re: Buffalo Bills Football in NEPA? How about the Steelers!!!

Who needs the Bills, the Jets, THe Giants...in case nobody realizes this is Steeler/Eagle Country....obviously nobody goes bar hopping on Sundays during football season! Plus the Steelers went 15-1 last season and have a good shot at the playoffs, plus they have radio history in this market!

Nigel: you can blame me for everyone getting worked up. I got bashed for asking the Giants/Jets question anyway. How silly of me to try to make real radio conversation on a radio message board. I thought my question was legit, but evidently it wasn't. Can you people forgive me?

I think your points are truly legitimate and timely too.
Keep 'em coming.

Shawn, I didn't bash you. Don't snap at me.

Nigel: I know you didn't bash me at all. I apologize to you if you felt I was criticizing you in return. I didn't mean it that way. I was referring to an earlier post responding to my original question about Jets and/or Giants radio coverage in the area. Evidently someone thought I was stupid for even asking that question. That's what I was referring to.

Yonkstur: Thanks for the support. I will continue to contribute topics when I feel the need...despite what anyone around here or on the unmoderated boards think.

The reason I even started the thread is that I figured that most NEPA residents would consider a Bills game to just be more weekend filler. It doesn't make sense to me that Citadel would seriously consider airing the Bills broadcasts in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, as I don't recall having seen any Bills fans there. It's mostly Eagles and/or Steelers if you're a native, Giants or Jets if you're a NYC/NJ/LI transplant (or returning from there to retire - mostly Giants in that case) or Raiders if you're a gangsta wannabe. I'm surprised that the Cowboys fare as well as they do, unless people have the wrong Dallas in mind. :)

Citadel hasn't decided to do it yet, but the fact that they even think it might be a good idea kinda underscores the argument that it takes local ownership of a station to properly serve the community. Then again, what would you expect from a city like Las Vegas, where the nearest pro football team is about 300 miles away? (Assuming you consider the Cardinals a pro football team.)

I understand your point, but a live football game is better than some voice tracked music show or the "Best of..." a talk show no one listened to the first time around.
