Buffalo Bills Saving Summer

The days of weak Summer books may be over for WGR. The Bills opened training camp this week and the station provided wall-to-wall coverage (aside from the midday Sabres show), which should pay off with better ratings for what traditionally has been a weak rating period. It's early, but the Bills being on an all-sports talker seems to be a good fit, especially with the John Murphy Show at night. This could change once the regular season begins, but for now, WGR benefits from the relationship.

I think most people care as much about Bills training camp minutae now as they did when the team's games were carried on 97 Rock; which is NOT MUCH.

Let's face it, WGR does this only because there's really nothing else TO do. I expect NO additional summer share as a result of this.

This year may be an exception. Lots of big off-season moves, and people want to Bill-lieve. People want to hear an evaluation of the new talent, and the prospects for the new season. Too bad that WGR doesn't bring in a real "football guy" instead of leaving the discussion to several guys who are more interested in hearing their own voices than they are about conveying real information.

Dumping Cowherd overboard to go local from 10-noon, and adding Murph? As much as anything, GR is creating goodwill among the faithful with those moves. And yes, I think that will be reflected in upcoming books.

So the Bills stunk up the joint last night but Kevin Sylvester couldn't discuss the game this morning.

All Sabres, all the time.

Even on August 10th, the day after the Bills first preseason game of the year.

Uh, George. Kevin is a Sabres employee who is paid to do a Sabres show. What would be surprising is if Sylvester DID talk about the Bills. I would expect Sylvester will be pre-empted on Mondays this Fall for Bills talk.

Anybody else suspect that come around game eight of this season, the Bills are gonna wish they were still on 97 Rock & The Edge? WGR damn near disappeared at Clinton and Schwartz when pattern change kicked in.

Considering how weak the weekend programming is on WBEN, Entercom might consider running the Bills on 'GR, 'BEN, and 'LKK.

Wait and see how the 2012 Bills start off.

If we see a 5-0 or perhaps even a 4-1 start, get listeners (and advertisers) excited and help them catch Bills Fever by simulcasting on 930 AM and 107.7 FM and perhaps even 102.5 FM.

WGR's signal is an issue. You can't have drop offs like that. The Bills will receive phone calls about it if that continues to be a problem.

December, sundown at 4:45PM, Bills in a playoff run - "Click, hisssssssss."

Yeah, that'll go over big.

In recent years, the Sabres have been far more popular with local sports fans than the Bills, so I would imagine that WGR management is as confident with the signal for Bills fans as they have been for Sabres fans.

One reason the Sabres have been more popular the last few years is that the Sabres have contented for or made the playoffs while the Bills have been in the "wilderness" for 12 seasons. IF both teams are contenders the Bills are the bigger story, in my opinion. I'm guessing that since the Bills are being carried on WCMF that the lack of GR after sunset in December maybe doesn't concern Entercom?

'CMF does nothing for the Buffalo market. The Sabres are usually on TV as well as radio, with the same announcing team, so it's less burdensome. Then again, if the Bills are headed for the playoffs, sell-outs are likely, so it may not matter. If not, then it also may not matter.

You're right, Rox. I guess I was speaking for myself, living in Leroy. :-[

<chuckles> Reminds me of one morning back in the 1970s when the signal pattern switched from nighttime to daytime. Stan Roberts goes "Hellooo, North Collins!" right after the switch was thrown...
