Buffalo Broadcasters HOF - Mary Lounsberry induction

Any former WNIA jocks out there/ Join a a group of us at the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame ceremonies. Mary Lounsberry will finally be inducted. Mary was instrumental in giving a lot of us our start in the business. If you need more information..contact me.

Mary's job was to implement the rather peculiar programming ideas of station owner Gordon P. Brown. Few of these programming concepts traveled much beyond Buffalo and Rochester. Mary did give multitudes of young men their first radio jobs but only a few of them ended up at bigger and better stations. If you are going to extol Mary's virtues you might as well spell her name right.

Lonsberry/Lounsberry - an easy to make mistake.

I don't think anyone has records of WNIA alumnus who made it to other stations, but I'm pretty sure there were more than a few. Check out the WNIA page on Facebook and meet some of them.

How about "Lounsbury"? Many years ago I got to meet Gordon Brown and the subject of Mary came up. Brown said that Mary's husband was in the construction business and Mr. Lounsbury had a major part in building the studio at 2900 Genesee Street. Mary approached Brown and asked him for a job. He made her the station manager. My impression was that she had zero background in radio at the time.

There's another individual with a long history in Buffalo broadcasting with a similar but differently-spelt last name: Ike Lounsberry, who was GM of WMAK in the 1920's and went on to run WGR and eventually own the station when it was forced to separate from WKBW and the BBC (Buffalo Broadcasting Company) in the 1940's.
