Buffalo Local FM No more

I remember when I never got board driving around Niagara Falls with my radio blasting. It used to be an unique time for me. But last Thursday, reality of the new Buffalo radio caught up with me and I just wished I had my Ipod cranking up the tunes. Because of this new idea of syndication programing, WJYE, WTSS, and the once mighty WHTT are now nothing more then repeaters for big city shows. A year ago, I really thought WHTT had something with "104 on Shuffle" It was like, "Where did that song come from?" and the announcer was unique for our community both who he was and what he played. I sm now seeing a trend whereby even the weekends are now be taking over by this syndication act. I know it mayy be cheeper to run syndication shows in Buffalo, but I'm board.

So many FMs now sound like those classic AM daytimers: No live bodies on the air from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., weekends given to syndication. And even though I'm inclined to listen to Classic Rock, NPR and Country and out of the demo gender-wise, hearing three AC stations repeatedly playing Chic "Le Freak," Jimmy Buffet "Margaritaville," The Four Seaons "December 1963" and whoever sings the Pina Colada Song and Disco Inferno is just strange. Not to dis them, but you wonder about the people (women?) who like those songs and want to hear them as often as they're played. Weird. TSL. Going down?

SOME Local

I've been listening a lot more to WHTT's "Flashback" weekends. They're live most of the time during the day, although John Tesh infests Sunday nights. Even that's better than "Delilah" and her litany of trailer-park woes, or that awful new syndication on Star in the evening.

Saturday night is a wasteland. Lance Diamond's act is older than he is, Buddy Shula is about as appealing as rooting for the Miami Dolphins, and Truckin' Tom Kent travels so far afield with his musical selections that I'm not sure what audience he's supposed to be going after. Then again, I'm not planning to give up MY Saturday nights to try and improve things.

Any of you old guys out there want to give up YOUR Saturday nights?

So, which station in Buffalo picks up Ryan Seacrest?

Toronto's Virgin radio 999 seems to think it's a great idea to air him instead of something local from 7-10pm Monday-Friday now.

If it's not already an option for Buffalo listeners, will it pop up any time soon?
I prefer that not to happen, but given the way things are going with radio today, It wouldn't surprise me any.

Seek Rest

You have to believe that both Kiss and Star would consider it. At this point, I'd say that Star has more to gain. Their current nightime syndication is AWFUL.

Rox, you seem to have an opinion about everything, but they are mainly wrong, and none of us know your credentials. Why don't you share those with us sometime? Do you have any?

Nope. Don't have any. I guess others on the board will just have to rely on you to point out my errors.

PS - Would you care to state your credentials? It's a little hard to determine your level of expertise based on the three posts you've racked up since you joined half an hour ago.

I'm a newcomer myself, but I have lurked a lot and have been reading this board for months and I must say that Sir Roxalot is one of the most thoughtful, articulate, and well-informed posters on all of Radio-Info. Not only does he listen a lot to Buffalo and Rochester radio, he is plugged-in to technological issues affecting our industry and has well-considered opinions about what the future may bring. Find another pigeon to shoot, superset.

If the best you can come up with is that you miss bumper stickers, then you're living in the land of "who give a s***?"

3rd Ticket, I don't think anyone who's read or posted on this board for any length of time would disagree with your post. I sure don't.

Rox is exactly as you suggested and a major contributor to discussions on this and a few other boards. Based on superset weekend's posts, I think it's fair to assume he has far more knowledge and experience in the business than the aforementioned Mr. superset.

This is not a slam at Rox. He or she is obviously a very passionate radio person. I do not think it is out of the realm though to talk honestly about our backgrounds, atleast to a certain extent. I have seen some pretty harsh posts that Rox has made to certain people on air, and i am just asking for any credibility in radio he may have, thats all, no biggie.

As far as my bumper sticker comment, it was just a thought, thats it. If you want to know my knowledge of the industry, ask me, and i will get more detailed. The greatest thing i have seen on the site is that people actually care about our industry, and that is great.
