In an editorial earlier this week, the Buffalo News called for the FCC to further investigate allegations of payola at Entercom radio stations.
How much impetus might be generated by such a recommendation?
It's mildly ironic in some measure. At one time, the Buffalo Evening News owned two of the radio stations now held by Entercom.
WBEN is these days not so much a great news radio station as it is the only news radio station left standing. With all due respect to WNED-AM and WBFO-FM, the ratings show more listeners tune to WBEN than the other two radio stations which in many instances offer superior programming.
The WGR thread was particularly intruiging, especially the recollection of the value of news programming on an AC music station, particularly as it was presented as "news five minutes sooner at 25 and 55."
The business has come a long way, has it not?
