I hate to keep harping about Toronto's CHBM(Boom 97.3), because their format is the exact opposite of introducing new music to listeners. That said, they create a connection to listeners by saying something interesting or doing interesting things(take a look at morning man Stu Jeffries; he does "Tell Me Something Good" weekday mornings(putting together a few good news stories every day; some of them make Boom's Facebook page)...and has, on occasion, put together some memorable rants(i.e. when a number of people were killed in Nova Scotia).) They have a series called Behind the Vinyl, which takes a behind the series look at some of the songs the station plays.
Consider that Canada has a lot more restrictions on radio than the US. And the industry there is going through much harder times than in the US. There may be a relationship.

True. You have the CanCon matter(where 35% of the music played each week has to be of Canadian content, as well as 35% of it played between 6am-6pm), when a DJ does a mic break they have to do 30 seconds of informative content, etc. Plus, let's not forget what the Bell-owned stations are doing by rebranding MANY of their stations...examples: if you're an AC station, you now have the moniker Move...adult hits are under the Bounce brand(ironically, this took out one of the more well-known AC stations, Hamilton's CKLH(102.9 K Lite))....country stations are known as Pure Country...and so on and so on. It makes radio BORING. Which is why I appreciate a station like Boom 97.3 all the more.
