Buffalo Rising

For the first time in half a century, the population of Buffalo is on the upswing. According to preliminary results of the 2020 Census, there are 31 thousand more souls living here than reported ten years ago. It's not, however, all sunshine and roses. The population of the six counties that compromise Western New York declined by 4.6 per cent, and the rate of growth is about half that of other parts of the country. Niagara County alone slipped 1.8 per cent.

Still to be revealed: demographics. The population figures do not offer a perspective as to what age groups are increasing or decreasing. Buffalo has long been top heavy, with a bulge in baby boomers and older demographics. On the upside, market demographers suspect that Buffalo's growth may in fact be driven by younger demos. The growth came only in Erie County, up 3.8%, and the City of Buffalo in particular.

How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm?

Urban growth would suggest increasing Hispanic and/or black numbers, including the higher birth rates associated with those demographic segments.

Like most cities, Buffalo has had a strong Hispanic/African American population for many decades while the it's population was going down consistently. Buffalo has undergone an incredible renaissance. Could it be now trendy to live in the city? Buffalo has a lot to offer. Those of you who live there should be grateful.

What does it have to offer? A giant Labatt Blue beer bottle mural at riverworks?

The radio aspect of this is a bit different. Nielsen does not measure cities; Metro Survey Areas are generally full counties. Buffalo, of course, is a two county are.

Nielsen will likely only have to make minor changes in the population data it has, which was last adjusted last Fall. Nielsen uses a combination of the annual Census Bureau population updates based on a survey rather than a full census and independent data from commercial demographers. Traditionally, going back to 2011, 2001 and even 1991 the adjustments in most markets have been insignificant except in a few places in the Southwest where undocumented immigrants have thrown off those interim estimates.

I always found Buffalo's biggest appeal to be the friendly down to earth people that live there. They are willing to help when you need it, not phonies, ask a question and you'll get an honest direct answer, even though you might not like it! Here is a tip to avoid endless rants do not mention taxes, especially not property tax. New York state can be brutal when it comes to the tax man.

The summertime is heaven. Everyone goes outside! Winter is a challenge that most natives like to brag about surviving but honestly there are worse places. I know people who haven't strayed far from the street where they grew up!

As for me I have been spoiled by too many winters in the south!
