Kevin Sylvester and Danny Gare - what's everyone think?

"Kevin Sylvester and Danny Gare - what's everyone think?"

Fine color men--but can they offer the very different skill set that a strong play by play announcer brings to the table?

If Rick Jeanneret is gradually rolling back his airtime, and is eventually easing himself into retirement over the next year or two, it seems to me we need to look to the ranks of PBP people in the AHL or announcers on other NHL clubs who have upstate NY roots. A few who come to mind are Rochester Americans play by play man Don Stevens, and two guys with roots in the area--former multi-sport play by play and color announcer Pete Weber, and current LA Kings announcer Nick Nickson Jr., a Rochester native and son of longtime WBBF personality Nick Nickson Sr. who might like to return home if he gets tired of fun in the sun and wants to return to a place where hockey is king between December and June...

I can't see Pete Weber coming back. He's got a full-time gig with the Nashville Predators. Do you really think that he'd trade that for a part-time gig with the Sabres?

RJ is legendary. How many guys really want to try to replace a legend? You really want to be the guy who replaces the guy who replaces the legend.

I agree, Rox, that Pete wouldn't give up a full-time gig with Nashville to return to Buffalo for a part-time play-by-play role. But when Rick retires for good, then it's a whole different ballgame. I don't presume to speak for Pete. But I'm sure the Buffalo job would be quite attractive for him. Buffalo is a big hockey market. He spent much of his broadcast career here. And he's a proven talent. It would be easier for him to replace a legend than an unfamiliar announcer from somewhere else. But that's down the road. For now, Rick is still the man and hopefully will be for the next few years. And based on their past body of work, I'm sure Kevin and Danny will hold their own during the road game broadcasts.

I'm glad RJ's son didn't get the job. He's not ready... and I don't know if he ever will be.
