Buffalo Spring 12+

First impressions? Not much changes when nobody makes a move.

WYRK beats WBEN. No surprise here. The only country station continues unopposed, and the number of people that want to listen to the latest rant on WBEN is diminishing - at least temporarily.

Kiss up, 'BLK down. These two have been swapping a fickle lower-demo audience for years. Diary placement is a likely culprit here.

97-Rock - worst book in a long time. Could the on-air cutbacks be taking their toll? It would be interesting to see the 7-midnight and weekend numbers. Of course, as Bills season cranks up, there will be a recovery - especially with the excitement over T.O., and/or if they get off to a fast start. But, there may be erosion in the Classic Hits audience, and the demos are getting older.

'JYE, Star, Mix - Christmas has worn off, it's back to reality, and it's all about the demos. I'd guess that 'JYE will lead Women 35-64, Star will lead Women 25-54, and Mix will get caught in the middle as an also-ran. Too bad that 'HTT sounds more and more like a spoiler, and less and less like the radio station it was a few years ago. Don't you think that a CBS-FM Classic Hits "we're sorry we screwed up" approach would KILL right now?

'BUF - maybe best book EVER. Do you think that the audience is looking for variety? Jack is maddening, but at least it's different. Once again, Classic Hits would do that job right. Imagine THAT format on this big signal. If Regent had a few dollars, there's a heck of a Buffalo airstaff on the street right now.

'GR-55. No hockey, so who cares?

The Lake - crickets still chirp, and there's nothing compelling to create more than the gentle ripples of a summer breeze. They sound more and more Classic Hits without the personality - a key component to make that format work.

'KB cracks a 1 share, and WECK makes the book again. Woo-hoo! Dick Greenes powerhouse duo of WLVL/WECK has a 1.0 share to sell in combo.

I have been rooting for WECK.....from my secret moutain top headquarters near Baltimore.......but during a recent visit to the Queen City......I had my radio set for 1230............I heard dead air........poor board work........and Tom S. may be a music programing genius.....but .............pleaase get someone else to do the news............................and continued luck to Dick Greene.....anyone who survived selling time at WYSL during the Bob Luther era deserves the best ........................

"the number of people that want to listen to the latest rant on WBEN is diminishing - at least temporarily."

Which dayparts are sliding the most for WBEN? Is this an artifact of replacing the entertaining Ron Dobson with Laura Ingraham, whose lackluster performance got her dumped in New York?

Dead......... air? Like a dozen periods after every phrase or sentence...............

I'm just sayin'.

WECK and Tom Schuh sound pretty good to my ears. And although I don't listen to WECK as often as a P1 listener might, whenever I do hear the station, it sounds tight and well produced. Could be you heard them in the middle of a fire drill. We've all been through that, like the time the air conditioner fell out of the window during the newscast. Or the time a not-so-small arc was shooting between the transmitter and phasor cabinet. Hmmmm... do I intro "Feelin' Stronger Everyday" or just seg it and run to the transmitter room with the CO2?

I opted for the seg and the fire extinguisher.

Now then. About these wacky ratings. "Good golly Miss Molly... ponderous, friggin' ponderous."

Sorry. Couldn't resist. I'll abide by the disclaimer and offer that whatever's written based on 12+ is pure speculation at this point.

Funny thing about Arbitron ratings estimates, when you consider the methodology, the ratings are "Yesterday's news, tomorrow."

It's clear that some stations took a hit. Like 97 Rock, which went 7.5 to 6.1, Spring 08 to Spring 09. Wazzupwidat?

On the other hand, you'd have to conclude that some stations got kissed. Like Kiss. Spring to Spring, 5.4 to 7.3? Where'd that number come from? Teens? Middays? Mornings? Janet & Scnheckleposeur?

Given that we're looking at 12+, it's hard to say. Did Ryan Seacrest go off the charts middays?

How does 97 Rock lose 1.4 shares Spring to Spring? Is it because Slick Tom Tiberi isn't on at night? If so, did Slick Tom's absence create problems for the morning show because fewer listeners were available to 97 the following morning?

Likewise, did WBEN slip from a consistent 10+ share across the seasons because local libertarian talker Ron Dobson has been replaced with a syndicated kvetching yenta, causing erosion in morning drive? I'd like to see what WBFO-FM and WNED-AM scored in that context.

Didn't look like a good book for AC, either. Spring to Spring, WJYE and WHTT are down. Star is flat. Compare Winter to Spring, and both Star and WJYE are down. WHTT is flat Winter to Spring, getting no traction with Mix. The 12+ shares for AC stations total 16.2 in Spring 08 vs. 15.3 for Spring 09. That's a 5 per cent erosion.

Yet, in years past, W25-54, Star has been very strong 25-49 and WJYE has been very healthy 35-64. WHTT being flat 12+, probably didn't make Top 5 W25-54. Maybe it's in the Top 5 W35-64.

Just speculatin'.

Even though WYRK, the sole FM Country station in Buffalo, is #1, it's down one and a half shares from a year ago, 11.8 to 10.3. Still, with a 10.3, WYRK probably controls most adult demos in every daypart. Then again, what would you expect for a station that's unchallenged in its format.

The other interesting turn is Jack jumping a whole share from Spring 08 to Spring 09 and up point 6 from Winter. Fluke? Kissed? Based on 12+, who knows? But the fact is, Jack has overtaken WHTT, which slid 1.2 shares Spring to Spring. Jack also edged the Edge and Star for the first time.

Strange.

But as mentioned, it's Arbitron. It's 12+. And I'm just speculatin'.

Ponderous... friggin' ponderous.

Well Citadel, you've done a masterful job with WHTT, flipping a format that was once successful, only to become a third rate also-ran in a three way AC race. Thinning out the morning show and firing local personalities who added to the product, texture and value of the station. Resorting to voice-tracking to death not only WHTT but the Edge and 97 Rock.

Brilliant.

Rather than scratching their corporate heads and wondering why Buffalo's Mix hasn't made inroads against Star or WJYE, Citadel brass in New York might want to read this article and take a few notes from the very successful return of CBS-FM.

Buffalo's Jack, for the first time ever, surged past Mix in the Spring book 12+ ratings after Mix cut the local personalities and resorted to only two live, local dayparts Monday thru Friday and only one live daypart Saturday and Sunday.

Once having a well-defined music format and strong identity with local personalities for many years as Oldies 104 and more recently as Buffalo's Greatest Hits 104.1 WHTT a few years before changing directions, Mix has been "middled" by WJYE and Star and some might argue "muddled" by a music format that's inconsistent and indefinable to the average 35-54 year old listener. Unfortunately, given the feckless condition of Citadel, it's very likely nothing will be done and WHTT will wallow in mediocrity.

Check, please!

Perhaps this is NOT the argument to make if you want more local personalities. Let's see: Jack doesn't even have the two personalities that Mix has...and they beat them! Hmmmmmmmmm.

Not so fast, "21". Look at the top stations - WBEN, WYRK, Kiss, WBLK, 97-Rock, and WJYE. ALL have considerable live and local content, and all kick Jack's ass. Star kicks everybody ass in their target demo - women 35-44, and they've got more live and local talent than Mix.

I agree with "Coldfinger". Citadel has hacked away at their Buffalo properties, yet still expects them to deliver the numbers and revenue that other groups do. Well, guess what - it ain't gonna happen. Revenue is likely to drop WAY more than the few dollars saved by cutting people like Slick Tom Tiberi, Jim Pastrick, and Gail Ann Huber. Add a lack of money for promotion, and you've got the current performance.

Want a solution? Cut at the TOP, and let LOCAL management MANAGE. If they screw up - replace them. Otherwise, let the LOCAL guys figure out how to manage their budgets. Set realistic targets, and get out of their way.

Now Rox..... you KNOW that makes too much sense. It's never going to happen!
