Buh Bye, Air America

Does not mean they will go away, but it isn't good, either. I'm sure their Democrat friends in Congress will arrange a bail out.

Humm, guess I spoke out of turn. Looks like they are going away. Sez they are going to liquidate the assets. Wonder if I can get a good deal on a board?

The radio network has filed for Chapter 7:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/21/AR2010012103868.html?hpid=topnews

All I'd like to know is... How does this affect Q100? ;D

Seriously, though, didn't some AA programming air on AM 1640 in a suburb of Atlanta?

It was 1690, then known as WWAA, and now known as WMLB. City of license Avondale Estates, and the transmitter is in the Cheshire Bridge Road AM radio gulch with WNIV 970, WQXI 790, WGKA 920 (the old WGST facility), and WAFS 1190 (the old WGKA facility)

The Fairness Doctrine returns to Congress in 3...2...1...

How would the Fairness Doctrine save AAN?
It wouldn't. (Warning: strong opinions ahead) The proggies' main beef is that conservative talk sells and progtalk doesn't, so in typical proggie style, they would (under a new Fairness Doctrine) hobble the competition instead of upping their game.

Then again, there's not really a conservative talk network. Most stations carry whatever set of shows they think will sell and can get the rights to. There's nothing stopping some station from picking up Randi Rhodes or Mike Malloy or Ron Reagan Jr., as independent pieces of programming, same as a conservative talk station which might carry Boortz or Beck, then Rush, and then Hannity or Savage.

As an aside, the demise of AA is NOT a good thing. A diversity of viewpoints is a good thing. But nobody is guaranteed a soapbox to stand on, or an audience. OTOH, if someone still wants to program a progtalker nothing is going to stop them, AA or not.

That's my point. The progressives think that the Fairness Doctrine would give them a voice. It won't. They have very short term memories because when the Fairness Doctrine was in force there was NO talk radio. Put the Fairness Doctrine and all the talk radio we hear now will disappear again and about 80% of the AM stations will go dark. But then again, that's probably what they want since outlets like NPR and the cable networks would not be beholding to the FD.

If they brought back the Fairness Doctrine which I don't believe they would. They Dems would so quickly be labeled for their McCarthyism act that it would be their death knell. I believe that Air America didn'tgain any true ratings success It took one special election to tank healthcare reform. They are hanging by a thread with re-election around the corner.

How do you even enforce the Fairness Doctrine? Set-up McCarthy like panels to judge if a show was liberal or conservative? To do that you would have to have defined parameters on what is a liberal or conservative agenda. What would stop a very talented person to espouse a liberal agenda but be so over -the-top and insecere that it would be more mocking than serious and your biggest fans would stiol be conservatives. Will the panel then decide if the person is serious or sarcastic?

It is great idealism but not realistic based on the current state of radio. The horse is out of the barn live with it. The best way to get liberal radio on the air is to produce compelling program with a broad-based appeal. Very hard considering this is what is called politically a center-right country.

Yeah, but can't the Liberals make enough of a stink about "equal time on the public airways" to get radio stations with conservative talk shows to change formats just avoid the hassle?

Curiosity question: How did Boortz and the rest of WRNG Ring Radio survive during the Fairness Doctrine? Or for that matter, WSB's Sound Off? Did they go out of their way to air a diverse mix of POVs? Or was talk such a small slice that it was an FCC rounding error? Or did they fly under the radar?

The Fairness Doctrine and the Equal Time rule were two different laws.

So on Monday evening at approximately 9 PM eastern (0200 UTC), all stations (AM & FM) will finally lose all their "air" supply. Sad. :(

Top dollar, cash or major credit card, caveat emptor in a trustee's sale.

Sorry Roddy, poor choice of words on my part. I wasn't referring to the Equal Time rule, just speaking generally. :-[

In the beginning AAR was said to have so many writers on staff they didnt have room to sit. What radio talk show has ever had writers?
