Buh-Bye KFNC

I know, this board is full with speculation. Place yer bets on this one. I'll make you a deal. If I am wrong, I will actually sign my real name on here.

5th format in less than 2 years. KFNC is going all sports and (here's a shocker) all the current air-staff will be let go. I got this information from a very reliable syndicator acquaintance of mine. This is going to happen soon I am told. Does it make any sense? Nope, but then again does ANYTHING Cumulus does ever make sense?

Cumulus got DFW Sportstalker KTCK "The Ticket" in the Susquehanna deal...could 97.5 be a Houston version with some simulcasting with DFW?

As I said elsewhere, I don't particularly care for the "Guy Talk" personality of The Ticket, but it does resonate with DFW sports listeners. Their market share is twice that of SportsRadio 610, Houston's market leader. In fact the total of DFW's two Sportstalkers (ESPN 103.3 being the other) is twice that of Houston's 610 and 790 combined.

Not sure what would happen with a three way sports race here. KFXR in DFW tried to be a third choice in that market for a while, without success.

Fo-Fo,

We'll see your name real soon I suspect. Even Cumulus knows there's no way a 3RD SPORTS STATION in the market has a chance, especially on a rim shot signal. I posted on another thread the limited audience availability of 2, less 3 all sports stations. Your "contact" is either playing you for a fool or isn't that connected. What will really happen: Cumulus will slip in some wacky format and try to sell it as the only one of its kind in Houston or they will broker the time to another group ala Multicultural Broadcasting and focus, as I said on another thread, on not running KRBE into the ground. Fo-Fo, you really need better "contacts", but you are humorous.

I was thinking that idea sounded frightfully familiar! ;D
The ever popular Fo-Fo-Fo-Fye revealed?
Stay tuned for that one. I'll raise your bet and see you with a ton of people on here that have been waiting for this moment for a long time. :p

Let's see, in whom would I put more faith: a syndicator whose shows have been inked to fill time on a station, or station management who's assuring the current temp-staff that "everything will be alright"? Honestly, a 3rd sports station that got half the ratings of either of the AMs would still be a marked improvement over the currnt KFNC.

KFNC, 1st choice they broker time to most likely Asian group(s) since the signal does cover the coast and likely the Chinatown on the east side of downtown and it is better than some of the AM signals currently being used.

2) The go all Sports, nothing local, just the straight feed 24/7 from Sporting News Network, who supposedly is moving to Houston which gives speculation that they have an affliate lined up already. KBME 790 is on life support and could be beat by an FM signal, especially in a city where AM radio is not even recognized by the under 25 yo group.

3) They just continue on with the current fare and continue to lose money. I wonder if 97.5 has even made a penny for Cumulus yet? My guess is no.

4) They have a fire sale and dump 97.5 altogether to whoever will buy the station.

The Chronicle reports that ESPN is ending its affiliation with KBME in January. ESPN apparently wants a station that just runs their programming 24/7, so this could be a perfect opportunity for KFNC or KIOL.

What does that say for KBME?

ESPN dropping them?!? Uh, is Fox picking them up? If not, sounds like KBME better be looking for a new direction.

Do you have a link to that Chronicle article? (didn't get around to their online edition for 10/7, and a search turns up nothing...)

The ESPN deal with 790 began in January 2005, so perhaps a two year contract expiring?

Guess a new moniker would be needed to replace "ESPN 790." The on air talent seems to avoid the "Sports Animal" imaging.

In the words of Ed McMahon "You are correct sir!"

For those that wanted the Chronicle link here you go:
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4245076.html

David Barron is the author of the article.

I would think that 790's next move is to wrestle Rome away from 610. Reason being, Fox Sports Radio reruns their 5a-8a CST morning show from 11a-2p CST in the Rome slot. I would imagine that 790 would want Rome to fill that slot live, or maybe they could hire another local host to cover the midday slot. Of course if 790 steals Rome, then the domino effect then goes to 610-- would 610 use SNR for midday or would they go local?

Here's another question for the peanut gallery: Does Jim Cutler (imaging voice for ESPN Radio Network) cut ties with 790 to go to the new Cumulus ESPN station?

I wonder who the "groups" are that are mentioned in the Chronicle article? 97.5 is the logical choice for ESPN (as a clone of DFW's KESN 103.3) as all the AM possibilities have signal issues, unless Disney is planning on buying KXYZ.

I don't think The Mouse would move Radio Disney from its current 1590 home to make room for ESPN there, but of course anything is possible.

The Sports Animal must be an insect, as it is probably about to undergo a significant metamorphosis.

Mike O is right. The only way that station could actually make money would be to broker out the time. But see, that's conventional wisdom Mike... something Cumulus has very little of. I never liked KRBE, but I will say as a fan of "radio", it's demise is sad. As for KFNC.. it's not even a Houston station, yet in their minds they think it is. I like to get on here and rile things up because it's fun... but I also know what I am talking about.

Isn't it possible since KIOL has a better signal ESPN would want 103.7?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Fo-Fo (LOL). Conventional wisdom says don't add another Sports station in the market on KIOL or KFNC, but whoever said Cumulus is conventional. And, whoever said Cumulus has any wisdom, but Fo-Fo, your source may be correct based on the Chronicle article, but the Chron doesn't get things right all the time either. As for ESPN, they do have the Disney option on 1590 if they are desperate AND they (ESPN) think there's money to made on the format. 1590 adds virtually no revenue to their baseline revenue. The true revenue 1590 derives is far short of their annual expenses. As for KXYZ selling to ESPN or the Disney group, that could not happen until Feb 08 at the earliest. Dan Frishberg and his BizRadio Group has that station leased until then, and then they have the option to purchase it. There's a strong chance Frishberg and his group will not come up with the money, thus opening the door for another group to come in and buy from Multicultural Broadcasting if MRBI wants to sell it.

I think you could simulcast it on both signals and it still wouldn't matter.

If it does happen, and either KFNC or KIOL picks up ESPN, I owe you a beer, Fo-Fo. This is going to be a running joke if ESPN goes to 97.5 or 103.7. It was a nightmare trying to listen to the Cowboys game the last time I checked KFNC. Constant mistakes, and commercials interrupting live action. Not the greatest sports coverage I've ever heard, that's for sure.

The Texans went to the NFL and had them pull the Cowboy games from KFNC, so it's not an issue anymore.

Rome will go to 790 if CC can put pressure on Premier Radio Networks (CC owns them) to place Rome on KBME. And the calls will be changed to KROM.

It sure would be if Cumulus buys the rights to ESPN. They couldn't successfully air one game without several glaring mistakes. For them to effectively run an entire sports station would be a miracle. They can't deliver the news, they can't deliver good talk. ESPN loses in this deal. Clear Channel may be a lot of things, but a cheap sounding broadcaster isn't one of them.

Just to fan the flames further..... www.espn975.com is a registered domain name as of October 6th.

http://who.godaddy.com/whois.aspx?domain=ESPN975.COM&prog_id=godaddy

Granted, the person of record on the account is from Dallas, but I would assume that they are a part of Cumulus's Dallas operation. BTW, espn1037.com is NOT a currently registered domain.

That pretty funny on the call letters. Anyone want to place some odds on Rome landing on 790? I'd say 60/40 yes.
