Building A Better Mouse Trap

First of all , Happy Easter Mississippi . As I read the top post items on this page as I often do , I
can't help but think back to more better times of radio in Central and East Mississippi . None of the stations I knew growing up still remain . It is not because these stations had bad programming or because they had no listenership . It is because EVERY new station owner or corporate cluster THINKS they can built a better mouse trap . I can remember Q 92 - WQST / Forrest when they played Top 40 . Q101 WJDQ - Meridian , now this was a Mississippi Power House that should have NEVER been messed with , and look at it now . Then of course Jackson radio can't leave anything alone . 94/TYX , Q99 -WQMV , go back even further 102/ZZQ . (However , I must add in all fairness- Miss 103 WMSI , the former WZZQ , has had a great run .)
But the others metioned and there are more , all had great programming . they had great listeners . It's just that everyone that gets their hands on the wheel ,thinks they can do a better job with it ....When , if ever , will they finally learn ?

Happy Easter to you Mr.Scanman. The stations you mentioned have gone away because the operators had to survive. The owners have a lot of hoops to jump through to get the properties, and let's face it, it's their money. Like it or not, bills have to be paid, and ultimately money is necessary. Now, some that have posted here seem to think "the suits",as they call them, owe some responsibility to the night -time announcers or part-timers, or random listeners of certain formats ,to determine how a station operates, and sadly business just won't allow that in the current world. WZZQ,for example, became Miss-103(against my wishes, also,as if that counted) because the new ownership needed to make more revenue. And it was very successful. But that doesn't mean that type of change in the Jackson market would work today, with 25+ signals. Some of the stations you mentioned were in tough markets to make a living in to start with- Forest? Vicksburg? Meridian? And frankly, the revenue wasn't there. Nothing personal to the programming people, but they just couldn't make it. It has become outrageously difficult to own and operate stations, and has priced some out of the consideration to do so. It's a scary world,so you have to "adapt or die".

Know it's uncool to respond to your own post, but wanted to add that I wasn't giving a blanket endorsement to ALL owners(have known some clunkers, too!), but some have made the blood, sweat and tears investment to run the properties the right way,and we've got to understand that, hey, it is their money, ya know. We've got some good broadcasters in this state, and we owe them a lot!

As long as free market forces remain and the pesky government doesn't interfere with business lest we see correlations to the USSR, all is well right? Even if the public is not being served by the airwaves they are supposed to own. The public are just the pesky useless public, long live big business!

Not sure we're talking about the same thing, Mr. or Mrs. Whale. Who is this "Big Business" person you're referring to? Somewhere I hear Lennon and Yoko singing "power to the people".......

All I was saying in the first place is "It if ain't broke , don't fix it " . I mean come on , is 92 WQST, or 98.7 Mix 98 ( the old Q99 WQMV ) any better off now than they were then ? Q101 or Q95 or whatever they call WJDQ these days has surely gone to pot . The only station mentioned above that can actually say the "overhaul " worked is WMSI (Miss 103).
