Building Music Library question

I work for a college owned station that's going to be changing formats. Right now we rely mostly on syndicated talk shows and we're going to be switching to mostly music. So my question is...where/how do stations get the music they play? Do you have to buy every song you want to use or can you get them for free? I'd appreciate any info you can pass along. Thanks.

The first question is...What will the format be?

My suggestion is this: Contact the format manager at All Access (www.allaccess.com ) and ask them to post the news you are changing...They have contacts with record reps that will send you stuff for free.
Next, get the Promo Only MPE player...it will atke a week or so to be approved, but once you are, you have access to all the new releases by most major companies and some Independent labels as well...If you are a Triple A station, you can get lots of help from www.tripleradio.com ...
E-mail me for other suggestions. [email protected]

Excellent advice, and I would also suggest making sure you are licensed with BMI/ASCAP/SESAC if you are planning on broadcasting any music licensed under those organizattions.
