Bull Morning Show

This morning, someone named something like Deke was on The Bull. He was voicetracked and did some morning show-type talk but played a lot of music. He said he'd be back tomorrow at 5AM.

Was this just holiday week fill? Was it a tryout? Will this guy fill the slot until a new morning show is hired? Will he host the new morning show?

He has a good voice and is a little laid back. After the station's short history, they couldn't put on a voicetracked morning show. (Or could they?) Yes, they're voicetracked middays and evenings, but that's a little different.

I heard him again - Are you sure he's voice-tracked? I remember him being on 96 Rock quite a lot before the flip to Project. Whether or not it was voice tracked, I liked it. Played more music, made me laugh (ok, smile) a few times and I still had my traffic. But being it's a holiday week, probably just a fill in - my question though, does he live here? I know he used to be on 96 Rock.

Well, one hint was that he was going to Art all morning for traffic. But when he'd say, "Here's Art with traffic," someone named Margot came on and did the report.

It just goes to show that as much as we gripe about voicetracking, listeners in general have no idea it's not live and local.

ha! i'm in the business, and i didn't notice - still, in this market - it has to be just fill in - they're not going to voice track mornings.

They wouldn't? CC has never cared about the quality of the product they put on the air! They would do anything to cut the bottom line..! Whatever happened to the rumor Randall Bloomy was leaving the CC cluster at the end of the year? Right now I think that is the best thing CC could do.

Dave Pratt formerly of CBS Radio property Camel 108 in Phoeniz will replace Cledus.

Kristin Gates will be out. Pratt will be paired with a new female laugh box from the Minneapolis cluster.

Very specific. My only thought is with a book out called "30 years behind the mic," he'd hardly represent energized new blood hungry for the fight against Kicks. It'd be another Cledus. If you're gonna go with someone like Pratt, just bring in Rhubarb.

Ditching Kristen, someone who actually knows Atlanta and has a rolodex and knows what the country audience here likes, would truly represent a station that doesn't know or care what city it's in. It matters, and country listeners can smell it a mile away.

If what you're saying is accurate, this really does feel like Cledus version 2.0.

I hear you, Jax, although Pratt is nowhere near the age of Rhubarb.

Pratt has a proven ratings record that spans years, and he's a lightning rod. The Bull has to make hay while the sun is shining after floundering all this time. It has to find a way to attract immediate attention, which it hasn't been getting from Atlanta. And it has to quickly bring back listeners who tried the station and found an inferior product in the past.

Of course, all this assumes the post that he's coming is accurate.

If accurate, I'm all for taking chances, but why dump Kristen? (as of this posting, she's still on the website) If she's gone, then so am I, and I've been an avid Bull supporter. You've GOT to have that local connection.

Maybe it'll work. No one on this board is ever 100% right. I just know the depth of the affection Kicks listeners have for Caddy. If contrived controversy is Dave's gig, Caddy's gonna win. If they try a national syndicated morning show based out of Atlanta, then bet ALL your money on Caddy.

I understand what an institution Dave is/was in Phoenix, but that took decades to build and doesn't get transferred. He's starting from square one as a complete stranger. This is going to take a lot more time to work (if it does) than CC is banking on.

Plus, if he's a phenom and as much of a legend as I hear, how could he get canned with 2 full years left in his deal? I know the easy answer is "he was too expensive." But they'd rather have this legend gone and eat the remaining 2 years then keep him to the end of his contract?

I will give CC this, it's impressive they're willing to put this much money and time (2 things you can never get back) on the line for a hail mary like this. Let's see if Dave catches the ball!

I agree Kristen is very effective and could certainly partner with someone new in mornings. They could call it just "The Jack Pratt Show" at first (rather than Jack & Kristen) to establish there's been a change.

Maybe management wants a total break from the past. Otherwise, replacing Kristen does not seem to make sense.

Everyone will agree that Caddy is a nice guy but I think you overestimate the "depth of affection" stuff. Caddy hasn't been around decades - he's just a good jock reading liner cards - nothin' more. Now Rubarb was an real life "personality" and had folks who would take a bullet for him - and he was #1 back in the day for a book or two - got fired and no one batted an eye. Same with Caddy. Fire him tomorrow and life will go on.......
Someone will bring in a morning show which will send KHX to the dust bin of radio history. WKHX is a poor country station in every conceivable way - it's a music jukebox.....nothing more. When Boy Bob ran Y106 it beat the snot outta' KHX - another Bob Neil will come along and do the same. It just so happens that ClearChannel is so inept that they have not provided any real competition.
I'd like to see a real signal (Dave perhaps)go high intensity country with a CHR approach. In a 3 way this station would be the only left standing. It would take all the males from both KHX and UBL leaving those two to split the females which would give them a 1.5 each.
A real personality driven country, done correctly(meaning correct positioning and lot's of advertising) and high intensity FROM THE BEGINNING, would rock WKHX's world........

I have to disagree somewhat. Cadillac Jack in my opinion is an excellent personality. He has a unique sound that fits really well with Kicks. I do believe he has a following.

Add Dallas to the mix, who is likeable on air and sounds very good, and you have a heritage morning show that will be difficult to dethrone.

Kicks, however, has minor-league talent in midday and evening, making the station somewhat vulnerable. Even though The Bull voicetracks in these dayparts, its talent--Madison Reeves and Ty Bentli--are far superior to the live jocks on Kicks.

Caddy is a good fit for jukebox, liner jock radio - he does that very well. Sounds like a nice guy too. And liner jock, jukebox radio seems to do very well in PPM's - when you get down to the crux of the matter that's what matters.

As I was saying, cousin Deke is part of a Clay Hunnicut experiment. If it works, there will be many more VT'd mornings in the coming months.

I just spoke with Clay. He says this rumor is 100% false. He's still searching for a new male host and Kristen isn't going anywhere for now.
