Bulldog 1037 is back

Bulldog 1037 is back, but now as a News & sports station. At 6 am sharp, "Wild Thang" ended and The New Bulldog 1037 began.

Tim Bryant 6-9
Martha Zoller 9-12
Jim Rome 12-3

3-6 "America's Afternoon News" (with local at top & bottom). Seems to be an alternative to "All Things Considered".

Sounds like all they did is kick out the syndicated shows (Boortz, Howard, Hannity, which you could get on AM 750 and NOW 95.5...blah blah blah), except for Zoller who flagships from the station.

Looks like another move to put more hurt on WDUN, which splits signals part of the time (during Beck, but not during Rush or Hannity, IIRC) and features more local programming on the FM when they do. Stinks if you're using TuneIn and looking for Beck, because they webcast the FM and not the AM. Someone at Cox must have it in for Jacobs.

I still don't understand why they will continue (I'm assuming) to carry UGA PBP, since both WSBB and WNGC do and have excellent coverage in the area, unless it's ANOTHER big, ahem, "Forget You" to WDUN to keep them from picking UGA PBP back up.

Has Cox been reading this board and decided to experiment with all-news (or "more-news")? Or is this strictly a tweaking to eliminate redundancy with WSBB and also put more hurt on WDUN?

Kinda reminds me of when CNN started CNN Headline News. 103.7 focuses on the top stories while WDUN is more in depth. Both are pretty good at this point and it sure beats hearing WSB's call letters every 5 seconds - whether AM or (and NOW) FM.

(Remember, the above positive statements are before tweaking. ;))

I'm good with news as long as they just stick to the headline...quick summary...no commentary, no opinions or talk. I may even start a preset for this.

They had the UGA-Mercer game on last night, so I guess the PBP is going to continue. I don't remember if WNGC carries hoops PBP, but I know AM 750 and NOW... yeah, yeah, yeah...does.

So whats the point here? Why does the format matter?

A station with no local (Gainesville area) programming, local sales force or event staffing is all of a sudden going to double winter billing from $1500 to $3000/month? Is the Cox name so powerful that advertisers dial in for orders and leave their spots on the voicemail for someone in Athens to pull off?

The local station owner in me should be glad that it's a non-entity, but the broadcast school owner is really disappointed at the continued waste of spectrum space. (Although I'm sure the ref in Athens is a perfectly legitimate station.)

I am sure Martha Zoller will be very disapointed to hear that she (and the radio studio for WXKT in the wells fargo building in Gainesville) doesn't actually qualify as "Local" .And I'm sure that all that local news and traffic that talks about Gainesville city business, traffic, crime and news on the street doesn't qualify either. As long as the information being provided serves the listening audience it doesn't matter where the transmitter is.

And furthermore to your point Cox did not get to be a multi billion dollar coproration by duplicating programming over a similiar and profitable area.

From a purely business standpoint in Hall County...I would say that as long as people are listening and advertisers are buying Cox does not consider this a waste of spectrum nor do I and many others who happen to enjoy these changes.. that's why I would buy the station and as I understand from a sales rep, it is doing and has done quite well financially.

Who is the voiceover guy......

I like the New WXKT.

Now they need to get their website in order. Come on Cox, it's not that hard.

And have they lost their CNN affiliation? It seems like during overnights that they have blank air from :00-:06 or :30-:36 until Yahoo! comes back on. BTW, is that the former Sporting News Radio?

Who's this Joel Aaron filling in Martha Zoller today? Cox should bring him on full time. He's a hell of a lot better than Andy Dean!

Is Tim Bryant still doing the news on WNGC? I know he was doing mornings at WGAU 1430 with former WSB reporter Matt Ceassear.

Tim does news for all of the Athens properties, except Magic 102.1, as Beth Larsen handles that stations morning news.

I knew Beth Larssen did the news on Magic,I think Tim Bryant is working out of the Gainsville studios. I wounder if Mike Wooten is still with them?

Tim is out of the Athens office. Mike left to teach in Milledgeville I believe.

That makes sense because Tim lives in Athens,on weekends he works at WSB. I remember Mike as the news director for WNGC back in the 95.5 days,he left to become the spokesman for Athens-Clarke County School System, and came back a couple years ago.
