Woo hoo, dentist office music in HD!!
At least it is better than the old dentist music of yesteryears that used to be called "Elevator Music", "Beautiful Music" or "Easy Listening Music", which was pretty much Instrumentals.

Well Mix used to be a Beautiful Music station, and a pretty good one. They had high ratings a lot longer than most and stayed in that format as KCTC a lot longer than stations in other markets. They made good money for the Kelly Brothers and later Tribune before going AC.

96.1 was the last Beautiful Music Station standing in Sacramento. The station was known as KCTC until early winter 1990. The KCTC call letters went to 1320 about that time, and 96.1's owners flipped the format to AC as KYMX, Mix 96.

I seem to remember the old KCTC having a very bright, uptempo version of Beautiful Music which was tagged as the "California Sound." I never cared much for the Beautiful Music format, but Sacramento sure had a lot of it back in the day.

KAER (92.5)- Spring 1979-January 1982.
KCRA-FM/KCTC (96.1) - Mid 1960s through Jan/Feb 1990
KSFM/KPSC/KEZS (96.9) - 1961 - July 1974
KSFM (102.5) - April 1972 - April 1974 (Pre-Earthradio; Post K-Robot)
KHIQ/KEWT (105.1) - Early 1960s - Summer 1984 (This is Cute.....K-E-W-T)
KGMS (1380) - Late 1960s - Summer 1982 (No Bach.....No Rock)

Perhaps an Easy Listening HD-2 channel would be an option ---If HD radio was actually optimized by the general populace.

KEWT had huge ratings in the 70's and KCTC was a ratings getter as well, I worked there in 1982 before moving south. Program Director Gil Boucher was one of the best as a programmer and his production skills were way ahead of the Sacramento curve. They were a very organized operation. I learned a lot at KCTC as it was part of the automated radio/production class I took at Cosumnes River College. Boucher taught the class and we would meet once a week at KCTC. The way they ran the station really opened my eyes up to what you could do if you really thought ahead. Guess that format has now been relegated to Radio History, doubt it would really be viable in today's radio world, but the suits would love the automated-money savings aspect of it.

The last Easy Listening station on the air that I remember was KBEE in Modesto. They were on 103.3 until 1992 then moved to the AM dial (like KCTC) while 103.3 became (and still is) Kat Country 103. Ironically both KCTC-1320 and KBEE-970 became Easy Listening for about a year before both switched to Satellite Adult Standards (1991 for KCTC and 1993 for KBEE.) Also both stations are now ESPN Sports though AM 970 has had it since 1997.
