BURLINGTON BLOWOUT

Sorry to hear another real pro has been shown the door. Ken Barlow, who with his former partner (Shapiro) created some of the biggest disasters in radio history, has fired the talented Lana Wilder from Star 92.9.

A syndicated morning show is possible.

The termination of one employee is not a "blowout."

That having been said, it's amazing to me how an adult contemporary blowtorch has absolutely no traction in developing a morning show. It seems to have been a black hole on that station for years. If you're going to can Lana, then just put Bob and Sheri (or better yet, Elvis Duran) in there.

Oh, and as of 4 PM, she's still on the site. You're not another full of crap one post wonder, are you?

Most who have worked in radio know that being fired is known as being blown out. But thanks for correcting me and questioning the accuracy of my post. Check your radio Monday if you think I'm wrong. The issue worth discussing here is the firing of a talented pro with the chops to get the job done by a hack (Barlow) who didn't give that pro the support needed. Radio is a cesspool. Argue amongst yourselves.

It is troubling when a radio person gets laid off, since we have laws that limit the number of FM licenses. Lana can't legally start her own station, so she's (allegedly) in a bind. Then again, if a pirate in B-P were to get ignored by the FCC the way they do here in Boston, maybe she should give that a try.

There's little I hear on Barlow's three FM Burlington stations that makes me believe that he has any good new ideas. In the meantime, J-Fo should start setting the buzzer, because she's the only person in that building I would put on the Star morning show right now. She's clearly the face and voice of that station. Why not, you know, put her on in the daypart with the largest audience?

Knowing Ken there's no way that this decision was easy for him. Don't forget that he started out as a jock. He's knows exactly how awful it feels to be on the other side. He's done a lot of amazing things over the years one of them becoming a successful local owner. Not too many jocks have done what he's done. It sucks when someone talented loses a gig but it's the talented folks that end up on their feet and find a new opportunity. PAR when you are the owner of a radio station and responsible for the everyday operations let us all know. We'll see how you handle the same difficult situations that Ken has faced everyday for many years now. It's simply not possible to keep everyone happy all of the time. Maybe Corn will hire her to replace himself so that he can that there is a talented pro on his staff.

Barlow may be stupid, but he can't be that dumb. Then again he has destroyed that cluster. I hear the latest arb numbers are the lowest ever for all of the Vox stations and Star did not have the Christmas bounce it has had in the past.
If you ask me, if you are going to let anyone go on that morning show, it has to be Nolan. Next the news guy who can't finish a sentence to save himself.
FYI.....Lana is still listed on the website.

I'm still baffled by Star doing all Christmas last year as well. Did Barlow forget that the station is no longer owned by CC and he doesn't automatically have to make them all-Christmas? There's a lot of holiday backlash out there. See how Magic 106.7 has never jumped onto that bandwagon? How has that worked out for them? Hippest AC station in America...take notes.

Take a look at the holiday ratings book in most PPM Markets. Many all-Christmas stations doubled or even tripled their ratings. Even though Burlington is a diary market, I'm sure all Christmas is an easy advertising sell. It's all about the Benjamins...

Oh, and Magic? Their sister classic hits station WROR does the Christmas thing. If Greater Media did not have a compatible signal to put the Christmas format on, it would be on Magic. Plus, GM is in competition with the CBS classic hits station that also does it. Boston is one of the few markets where the all Christmas station is not the AC or Contemporary Christian station. That doesn't make WMJX hip. It's just the market conditions.

C'mon Will, we know you understand this....

Burlington has similar conditions. Let Cruisin' play the burnt out oldies. Put the Xmas on DOT next year, which seems to need the help, while Star, which plays current music that's not burnt out, keeps doing what they do.

I'm not privy to any ratings, so I'll take your word for it regarding the PPM successes of all-Xmas stations in other markets. But I will again reiterate as I always do that in B-P, Arbitrons are tits on a bull, and that the Eight Sisters aren't flipping any time soon.

Hmmmm.

Ken Barlow a "hack"?!?

I'm sorry, I'll put his track record up against most folks in radio who reside up this way. I'm certain that PAR11 hasn't accomplished anything close to resembling what Ken has done in the last 35 years.
