Longtime Reader, first time poster. Just got something I wanted to vent about a bit.
Why is it in smaller markets like Lebanon / Rutland people are so quick to burn bridges. I have been in the market for close to 20 years and I have seen a rotation of the same people in and out of different stations / companies etc. I have worked with people I used to compete with...compete with people I once worked with and I just don't get why you would burn a bridge when the odds are so good you may someday be applying for a job with...or trying to hire, the person you've burned that bridge with. Here is an example -
When CC sold their Lebanon stations and Great Eastern took over there was a lot of talk about people getting fired and how terrible it was going to be working for this new small company. It's normal. Change in radio is scary and sometimes it does mean the worst. But the best thing to do is go into it with your best foot forward and keep an open mind. During this instance some did just that and are still working their...have been promoted and are happier then they've ever been...others quit and are either waiting tables or have already been canned from their 'new much better jobs' and yes some were fired. Because of poor attitude.
Case in point. One employee was downright negative from day one. He was given many chances, many warnings and many opportunities. But the attitude just didn't stop. So yes...he was fired. He was devastated. Tears, anger etc. But he found a new opportunity and went for it. Great right? Well the problem is he couldn't let go of the past. And he started calling his former co-workers...telling them how terrible everything sounded...and how horrible their new company was and kept telling them they needed to get out and their jobs weren't safe. Constantly calling...to the point where his former co-workers would have his calls sent to voicemail so they didn't have to hear it anymore.
Then he started hounding some outside of work. (hello...get the hint!) Bashing on other employees...bashing on current PD's...current Morning shows...current salespeople and management...rather then concentrating on his piddly little AM station. Instead of selling his 50 cent (or bonus) spots he is putting all his energy toward insulting the company he was so devastated to be fired from. And insulting the people that were upset to see him go. Henceforth burning some serious bridges. And destroying friendships.
It just seems to me that if you are let go from a company...particularly when it's justified...you need to look forward and concentrate on your listeners...or in this particular case...Listener. And your product and your sales. Not on trying to knock down others who are working hard and still employed with the new company because of it.
Just my two cents...I welcome other examples and comments.
