Business stations in Frisco?

T

The other day, I was reading one of the radio-info news letters from Tom Taylor, and he happened to mention that Salem has a business format on air at KDOW (1230) in Frisco. After reading that, I also remember, though not very well, reading about a year ago that KYSY (1550, you know, that thing that used to be KYOU) flipped to business last year.

I’d like to know this: Am I correct? Does Frisco really have 2 business talk stations? I ask because I’m curious.

Thank you.

Okay. I’m going to clear some things up that I have researched, and maybe then you fellow posters can help answer the remaining questions.

First: No. I am not talking about a station in Frisco, TX. Frisco is another way to say San Francisco, CA.

Second: I must correct myself: KDOW is not on 1230, but rather 1220. (My bad.)

Third: I will tell you that I am blind, and use talking software to post on this forum. This talking software does not let me use google, or any standard search engine very well, and also can read call letters wrong. I mostly search on wikipedia, and radiostationworld.com for radio station info, and when I have trouble, I usually go to the radio-info boards, and ask fellow posters for help.

Fourth: In that vain, the 1550 I’m talking about is KYCY, not KYSY, as my talking software pronounced it.

Okay, now, I’ve done some more searching. From wikipedia, it turns out that KDOW (1220) is licensed to Pallto Allo, CA, and serves San Jose. Tom Taylor, who writes the column I read, just lumped the station in as a “Frisco” station. They are indeed doing business talk and business news.

So, for me, here’s where things get interesting. I checked in on their so called compeditor, KYCY. Wikipedia says they’re doing the “KYOU” thing. Is this true?

My question now is: What’s on 1550 in San Francisco?

Thanks for your help.

Radio Kid,

1550 AM in San Francisco images the station as KYOU - kay why oh you, but the call letters are really KYCY - kay why see why. The call letters are left over from the 1990s, when 1550 AM was a repeater of an FM country music station called Young Country.

The station does not run a business news format - it runs pod casts. I was under the impression that the station also ran syndicated talk shows from Adam Carolla and Tom Leykis, since Adam and Tom were kicked off a CBS owned FM station here. But according to their online schedule, the station is now all pod casts, all the time. So I guess us San Franciscans can no longer listen to Adam and Tom.

I have provided a link to the station's website, though I suspect your talking software will not be able to read it.

Hope this helps.

And....if you say 'Frisco' to a San Francisco native they are likely to beat you severely about the head and shoulders.

Newsperson responds:

Don't say Frisco, it's San Francisco or maybe for short, San Fran.

Now KYCY does not just run podcasts. They also run talk shows, some paid about business and some sydicated. They are also a flaggship station of the Oakland A's along with KFRC-FM.

I still hear Tom Leykis on the station late at night. A syndicator counts it as a San Francisco (not frisco) clearance regardless of the time it airs.

Remember they are very short staffed at KYCY and updating the station's webb site is just not a priority.

In regard to Salem the last I heard was that 1220 in Palo Alto was KNTS, has that changed?

Newsperson

Lkeller, thanks for clearing things up, and for your help. I was able to read some of the KYOU website, and I still find the concept of podcasts on the radio interesting. I’m going to go now, and try to see if I can listen online to KYOU.

Newsperson, thank you so much. I knew I wasn’t losing my mind! I could’ve sworn that I read about KYCY dropping at least some KYOU affair for other programming. Now I know: KYCY in San Francisco is a mix of both.

As for KNTS, well, it’s no longer KNTS. From what I could find, it changed to Business talk as KDOW earlier this year.

Oh, and thanks for telling me that I shouldn’t say “Frisco.” Where I live, people say it all the time, so I appreciate the correction.

Where you live? Seriously, they actually call San Francisco "Frisco" all the time in central New York?

Considering that most New Yorkers living outside of the five boroughs couldn't find Manhattan on a map -- and hardly any of them have ever been there -- I'm surprised that anybody in your area ever discusses San Francisco, let alone calls it "Frisco."

Thanks for dropping in, Kid. Now go back to the beautiful Mohawk Valley.

That is a mean spirited reply to a person who readily accepted the correction about saying "Frisco" and, further, is very interested in radio despite a handicap.

That's true...I've heard the term used in LA and Sacramento and I've always corrected them. I remember Dave McElhatton using this quote in a news cast back in the 80's...."You'll fry in Crisco, if you call San Francisco.... Frisco!

You're correct. It's 1220 KDOW. It broadcasts from East Palo Alto and covers a good portion of the Bay Area during the day but pretty much Mountain View, Fremont, and Palo Alto at night (something like 140 watts, I think). They made the switch from KNTS - "news talk sports" to Business news maybe 3 months ago. I've never heard of the station making the ratings at all, and I first learned about them because I happen to live close to the transmitter and it overloads certain radios at times. Obviously they don't have much of a following - I don't think anyone else on this board even knew about the switch.

Business stations do not need ratings to make it. All it takes is top level decision makers tunining in an letting their egos take over. In "San Fran" making the $ is what it is all about.

I doubt that. They need some ratings. CNET radio is a perfect example. Lots of CEOs and leaders loved it, but they never had enough regular listeners to show up in the ratings. If they had been making money, they never would have given up 910.

This station has a construction permit to increase its power to 50 KW day/night from a transmitter site near the KTCT/KFAX locations, north of the San Mateo Bridge on the bay coastline of Hayward. Won't have much of a signal in Contra Costa, but will boom in from Willits to Santa Cruz. Last time I checked it was running "La Jeta" a Spanish format.

Pardon my confusion ... when you refer to "this station," what station are you referring to?

1220 KDOW, licensed to Palo Alto.

Wow, maybe I was getting skip at night from the Canyon Country AM! It's KDOW as I speak, business news. Really lousy automation screw ups...
