Businesses and Listeners should support local media

I was thinking about the By local Saturday campaign a few weeks ago, and I got to thinking about local businesses that buy advertising on Clear Channel especially. I'm sure in other areas these thoughts may include CBS, or Cumulus, etc., but Clear Channel continues to cut local jobs, not just on the air but in sales as well. The money they make goes back to Texas. Look at Delmarva Broadcasting, they are local, Wilmington, Milford, Salisbury. WGMD in Rehoboth, even Great Scott out of Georgetown. In news papers Gannet, owns a lot of local papers, but they money leaves the area. It's not just the Walmart, Target, etc, it's media too. If you want local business to thrive purchase from truly local businesses and the local businesses also buy from local media. Where am I wrong?

Whether a station is corporate-owned or not, those on the air (who are left!) and those who run it, live locally. I'm not a fan of Clear Channel either, but the people who work there, live here, just like the folks at Delmarva do. You could also choose not to buy a Japanese car, but the fact is Honda is more American-made than Chrysler these days: American workers, an American plant, etc.

I think anonymousradioguy make a good point.

Many want no illegals here picking peaches and other fruit or vegy's, but if and when the day comes that American's are picking that stuff, get ready to pay a much higher price as those folks will then be being paid American wages not the slave wages the illegals get. Those companies aren't going to eat that extra cost, we will, literally.

So are you willing to pay more for fruit and vegetables in order to deport the 11 million illegals? That's the real question. No one in the media or in politics ever mentions this piece of information. So yes, we may need to seal off our borders and eventually get those folks out of the nation, etc, but realize what will happen once they are gone. There's always a cost to this stuff.

Same with radio. CC, just as with many national companies, don't always do things as we'd like, but the few employees they do have here, do live here, spend here, etc.

For any action there generally is a reaction. So don't shop at businesses that buy time on CC station's because you don't like the fact they gutted WILM or their politics, or they are on the bird 90% of the time, or whatever, but those few folks left at WILM, WWTX, WDOV, WDSD, and WRTX are the one's you're hurting as they'll eventually lose their jobs too.

Side note for Delmarva. You are talking apples and oranges when it comes to Wilmington (aka, the mother ship) and the other sites. They may be local on the weekend, but except for Wilmington, very little is live.

I guess market size makes a difference. So are those Delmarva stations on the bird or just voice tracked. By the way, just for the record, what stations down state does Delmarva actually have. I know of WDEL, WSTW and WXCY up this way, but really aren't familiar with the down state stations of Delmarva.

Delmarva has WAFL, WNCL and WYUS in Milford, 105.9 in Lewes (can't remember the new calls), 97.5 (simlucast of 105.9) as well as WICO-AM in Salisbury (just south of Delmar, Delaware, WICO-FM in Pocomoke City and WAVD 97.1 in Ocean Pines, south of Selbyville, Delaware. Yes they voice track on weekends, but they do some live jocks on weekends as well. As for Clear Channel, everytime you hear some one filling in for Phil it's from one of their out of state stations. The use a traffic service from outside the area, Delmarva does traffic for all three of their areas from Wilmington. Apples and Oranges, Delmarva has many employees in this area, money that is spent in this area, Clear Channel has very few employees in this area, money sent home to the Mothership. My point is, why by from a local merchant with the internet, well if they give you better service, service after the sale, contribute to the community. If you think this is good, then businesses spending money with local media is also good. Or we could just give all the broadcast frequencies to Verizon and AT&T, and live will just satellite radio and TV and the internet. I personally like to hear local radio, TV (you in New Castle County of course haven't had that for years, but down south we do, it may not be MAJOR Market, but it does give us news from our community, unlike the Philly stations that only cover it if it bleeds in Delaware).
