Bustos buying KXXO Oly

What classifies for Latin Soft Pop for lots of operators nowadays is just Latin Variety Hits, which they currently do program in Milwaukee on W250BN (La Caliente).

LaCaliente makes complete sense. The audio stream for now only appears on Bustos' "La Radio de Milwaukee" app and website, not in the main corporate LaRola app.

I am quite surprised they're not going to upgrade Urbana to the full class C signal on par with 102.9 and 99.3. Seems odd that they're relegating that to a translator that doesn't even hit Olympia.

Thanks for the reminder, so I can tape more of this heritage station before they go off. I hope KXXO does some special programming this weekend to honor their 35-year history of serving the South Sound.
I would think KGY-95.3 adds some soft rock 2000s hits to compliment for KXXO going off. Could KRXY even flip to AC eventually?

From their facebook page:
Just the facts: KXXO has been sold and Mixx 96.1 will go off the air after Sunday 10/26. New owner Bustos Media will begin its X96 Spanish-language pop format at 96.1 FM on 10/27. Throughout the week, we are having some special guests and programs, like synthpop duo 80s Kids Tuesday in the 8am hour, comedian and friend-of-the-station Sam Miller Wednesday in the 8am hour, Olympia radio superstar (70 years on air!) Dick Pust Thursday in the 8am hour, and Dick’s interview with station owners Toni Holm and David Rauh (shown ) Saturday at 7am. As we began our first official day on the air 1/16/90 with the Beatles’ ā€œThe Long and Winding Road,ā€ we will complete the circle with that as well. Tune in the 11pm hour Sunday so you can say you heard our last hour on-the-air! Check KXXO.com and our FB page for possible updates. Thank you for your support! We'll miss you ...

I think AC hits would be a bit outside of the current direction of KGY, since they’re leaning into classic hits. KXXO has always strong focus on local community outreach, events, news, and information. It will be interesting to see if anyone can carry that torch going forward. It’s a tough act to follow since you won’t find owners and management who care more about their community than owners of KXXO.

I'll toot my own horn here for 2 secs........ ME/KSKO and my commercial pt/ft/pt job.. KLMI. In 22 years of broadcasting, I've never met an owner who treats employees better and not only talks the talk but walks the walk on hard work and community service then the owner of KLMI. Laramie boy who went to hs and college there, never left, has owned the station 15 years and is 3 years younger than me(Im almost 42). Hes been on the air at the studio on generator power in his PJ's before late one night when many others were off after a freak may snowstorm brought down trees and power lines. (pt/ft/pt... worked from home in PA, went full time in WY, went pt from home in AK). KLMI is an example of a small market standalone MA and PA (no ma, just pa) station that is doing everything right. Its the only business he owns and he isnt getting rich doing it, but he does ok.

As for KSKO, while I'm not the owner, I treat it as such. And I've done amazing things despite being the only full time staff, no onsite engineer or GM. Its easy to care up here, if you have a soul and know anything about radio.... when you see how vital radio is up here, and you meet an elder who might have a tv on at home, but volumes turned down.. the radio is up though.

Taped a little KXXO overnight. Besides the addition of some 2020s songs and slightly-updated jingles, they sound exactly the same as they did when I lived in western Washington before 2014. Wider playlist than WARM and less corporate nonsense. I now realize what a gem the Puget Sound is about to lose. Freeway Heroes, Ty Flint, and the friendly voices can't be emulated anywhere else on the local dial. Locally-owned radio is an endangered species. Please continue to support these hometown stations while you can. 😄

The owner was older, wanted to retire, he put the station up for sale.. sopmeone who had the money bought it.. its still going to be reaching a local audience.. just because its not something you liek or speak doesnt make it non local or not serving an audience

No ones holding a gun to anyones head to buy or sell.

Gather up some friends, raise some money and buy a local station thats for sale.. I, scott fybush.. several people on here could find you one.

I don’t think this was the point that anyone was trying to make. KXXO definitely had more of a ā€œfull serviceā€ vibe to it, which is not something emulated elsewhere. It’s where people went for local traffic, local information, and local content. Taking music completely out of the conversation, this station really focused more community events, news, and information than anyone else. That’s a torch that is very difficult for anyone else to carry (or do as well). I cannot stress enough how much the owners cared about the surrounding community.

So no matter how you slice it, yes, this is a loss for the community. A huge one.

A lot of family businesses get passed down from generation to generation. Either there's no one in line to inherit the station, or no other family member interested in broadcasting, or willing to take over.

But then, considering how much it sold for, possibly, the $$$ was too good to turn down.

The same fate may be facing the 3 station cluster I worked for in NW PA. Owned by a guy whos about 80 now. His daughter i dont think wants it, and I'm nto sure his granddaughter wants that responsibility

Here comes "La X 96.1" . The audio URL showed up at LaRadiodeSeattle.com .

The station has yet to be added to their La Rola app.

The playlist looks mainly Spanish-language with a few English-language drop-ins (e.g. Elton John) - similar to what Lotus has attempted in the Bakersfield and Fresno markets. Most spoken inserts are in Spanish. TOH IDs are present too.

This will fly much better than Urbana in my opinion. No need to change the callsign.

Hey! They play Elefante so they're okay by me.

I was rolling tape the morning KXXO signed on in 1990. Jessica West was the stations morning show host and champagne bottle opener. It ran a test broadcast of bird sounds and ocean waves for the weekend, the air person reading off reception reports, Maple Ridge, BC to the outskirts of Portland when they were 72,000 watts on Rooster Rock and 96.1 Vancouver was silent. Damn good coverage.

That site on Rooster Rock was really incredible. The engineer at KXXO was a super intelligent and kind man. He taught me a lot about engineering over the years. He let me accompany him up to the Rooster Rock site one time and showed me around. Apart from being located on some dirt roads less traveled, it’s extremely high up with a great view of Mount Rainier.

I always wondered how good the coverage could be (with the tower being located so far out of the city of license and core population), but it absolutely worked.

The depth of connection that KXXO had with the community and listeners can truly be felt when reading the hundreds of comments left on their Facebook page. Almost every comment was over the loss of the PEOPLE at KXXO and not the MUSIC. Listeners are really going to miss the community involvement and radio staff that were more like friends and family than just a voice on the radio.

It's a shame that this loss will probably never be replaced.
