Bustos buying KXXO Oly

It's not on the website because it's over. Bustos doesn't want our hard drives/server. They're taking hardly any of the studio equipment. They don't want the physical space and we're out by the end of the week.
I was just guessing. You are there! Thanks for the report.

So who keeps the digital storage gear and content?.

Sounds like Bustos has a specific digital system provider and wants their gear and software.

So who gets the gear that Bustos does not want and the furnishings at the old office?

The digital stuff will stay with the owners or someone they designate. Staff and friends got first choice of gear and furnishings. The public was invited today to take the unclaimed stuff. It was a study flow and a lot went out the door....including, as I mentioned earlier, my headphones which I carelessly set on a flat surface for a few minutes. Heck, I had to rescue my lunch because the fridge went early.

Even the FRIDGE?! What about the kitchen sink? Oh, wait, the breakroom sink.

Listening to the last hour last night, I had a flood of childhood memories come back to me. I lived over 80 miles from the Rooster Rock transmitter, and 96.1 was still full-quieting on the family stereo growing up in Bothell. It's those jingles that bring back a simpler time. It was through that somewhat hissy signal of KXXO that I first heard "Vogue" by Madonna and "Good Times" by Chic.

Other memories: Jack Archer, the Freeway Hero: rescuing broken-down cars on I-5...
Trips to Hood Canal to visit a family friend's cabin, often with MIXX on the car radio all the way up the 101. My grandmother always planned the trip around the extreme low tides for oysters and clams.
And the handover around downtown Everett, Ebey Slough area, to CHKG's Chinese programming. Probably still the case even with Capitol Peak!

I remember Jack Archer as well. What I never quite understood is why even after he left traffic reports were still done by phone. I remember also thinking that the Rooster Rock site had some oddities, for instance a dead spot right around JBLM. I feel like there were others as well, but that one was the one that really stands out to me, as we would usually switch to Seattle stations when we hit that coming back from anywhere south.

I once visited a friends station where traffic reports were done by a local state police trooper, by cell phone.... 2 doors down the hallway from the on air studio

Well apparently they either weren't making enough revenue for him to keep it the same. Here is what was printed in Radionotas the online radio rag for Hispanic media and what is going on in media. "Bustos Media will launch Spanish X96.1 FM in Olympia, Washington
Bustos Media announced that it will begin operating 96.1 FM (KXXO-FM) frequency in Olympia/Tacoma, Washington, starting Monday, October 27, 2025. Until a few days ago the radio concept that was on the air in that space was Mixx FM, however, Bustos will launch X FM, an AC format station in Spanish." Not sure how it will sell for him. Since Regional Mex music has been their money maker.

My guess is they will set it up in the Kent studios, like the other formats that reach far north. They have quite a bit of room in that office, and he also owns that building. As far as equipment and furnishings, who knows.

Not keeping the format has a lot less to do with what Mixx was billing, rather more with how much expenses can be cut doing Bustos format vs. Mixx. That and the fact that (with very few exceptions) Bustos operates Hispanic formats.

the only outliers to that are leased time AMs in San Jose, Houston and some english music and news talk in tuscon.

The Rooster Rock site had some challenges. Some larger than others, as we all know. There were a few issues with shadowing around the Nisqually valley and near JBLM due to the lay of the land. In that regard, the new site was an improvement.

What a ride. It really feels like the end of an era for local ownerships. Big hugs to the entire staff from Ty, Lori, Dave, Ruby, Anna, Jeff, Dick Pust, Seth, Wayne. You're all absolute class. Hope all of you land on your feet soon enough.

I am curious if the owners will be selling off old carts, CDs, broadcast equipment etc. over the coming weeks. An "estate sale" of sorts at the Rockway-Leland Building?
The Bustos format reminds me of a station in the Tri-Cities that has a bilingual urban format. KYJJ 94.1 / K285FN 104.9
La Gran X 94.1/104.9 is truly bilingual... I'd sometimes listen to it on 104.9 to/from work and would hear both English and Spanish, sometimes within a single aircheck. Its playlist is more of a bilingual variety format - I've heard everything ranging from Latin Pop to Top 40 (i.e. KONA) to Classic Hits - and even a little country. In fact, I'd say it has the most variety of any station in Tri-Cities.

KXXO appears to be completely Spanish, with a few English songs mixed in. So far, I'm liking it, and would totally tune in if Bustos decided to introduce the format here in Eastern WA - KZML has HD3 and HD4 open...or they could replace the existing KZUS simulcast on HD2.

I am still waiting for a fulltime Spanish radio station in Spokane now that the last one failed and was converted to English-religion.

For those who miss Soft Rock for the Great Northwest, I present you with a few uncut airchecks from the final weeks of programming. ☺️
