..., But I Paid For Those Commerials...

Years ago, Commerial Radio, accepted large sums, to run large flights, advertising Satellite Radio. Those commercials ran because they never saw the service as a threat. Today, Clear Channel stations will run your paid spots to advertise your product or service. As the client, you have paid for those commercials to gain a return in business. However, the same station that sold you on using it for an advertising vehicle, continuously promotes a free download App for iHeart Radio, a destination where your paid spots do not air. Yep,...a free App, downloaded to your smart phone, mini-pad, maxi-pad, deoderant or plain! iHeart radio, the free alternative to Satellite Radio, the harmless service that we promoted in the beginning. Then, while you are listening to your spot run, it is followed-up by a cross-promotion promo, advertising one of their others stations, also another destination where your paid spots do not air. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm??????????????

Did XM ads air on anything not affiliated with Clear Channel? I say "affiliated" because the ads worked their way into shows syndicated by Premiere because of the CC ownership.

CC was a stockholder in XM. It was to their benefit no matter who you listened to.

with crazy thinking like that radio shouldn't air commercials for other mediums like tv and newspaper be cause your spots dont air there either. if you bought spots on a radio station to reach a targeted audience and the station aired them you got your moneys worth

...and readers of this Topic, I present to you the great closing words of Freqdev:..."you got your money's worth."

This year NextMedia, which has radio stations in Myrtle Beach, had numerous billboards advertising "Myrtle Beach Vacation Radio". I tried it (in late September) and there was nothing there.

I guess that wasn't much of a threat.

No, they ran them because they knew that Satellite radio would be successful, or not, whether or not radio ran their ads. So, they took the money. I would have too.

No,...the truth is...Commercial Radio had no idea. No idea...that they...were helping to create...a Monster. To them, then, it was a mere novelty. Commercial Radio is not wise about anything! Yeah,...to me, iHeart Radio is a powerful move: Give the listeners a free version of what Satellite Radio is charging a monthly subscription for. However, therein resides an enigma, subscriptions are up; 23-million, and climbing. Maybe time, and only time, will deduce a clear winner. Recently, I saw a TV commercial where a man, behind the wheel of his car,...was humorously "Air Druming" to "Fly By Night" by Rush. The source of the sound was not revealed, and to me, the song choice was rather odd; not one of the band's best known. I'm sure that there were/are many that were/are amuzed at the commercial, and liked the song, yet did not/could not name the artist.
TV simply dooooping radio, with a song that the Consultant said..."Didn't Test Well". When we began Rock 101 in 1987, that song was in the Selector, and they do still play it. Due to that TV commercial, THE ROAD, has added it to theirs. I heard it today, followed by a VT from some nassally northern robot, alleged as National Air Talent. He pointed-out the connection to the TV commercial, plugged "Clockwork Angels", the band's current release, and then directed the listener to a website.
My question here is...where is the airplay for the new album, "Clockwork Angels"; the new one from KISS, the new one from HEART, the new one from HALESTORM, the new one from ASIA, YES, GRACE POTTER, THE FIXX, JOURNEY, KIMBALL/JAMISON, AEROSMITH.........Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm???????????????????????

A Monster? The industry that had to consolidate to avoid bankruptcy and whose debt allowed John Malone to swoop
in and buy control on the cheap?

I'm not in radio anymore because I don't see a path to sustained profitability for the big consolidators I
worked for. That doesn't mean I see a bright future for satellite radio. In my view, it's in the same
situation with an only slightly better delivery mechanism.
