Can someone explain how this station has not flipped formats at this point? Numbers are awful, the music is awful and most DJ's are awful. Does not sound like a CBS owned property. Why no flip?

What do you recommend CBS Radio "flip" WPBZ to that will 1) attract larger target demo numbers; and, 2) increase overall advertising and NTR cash flow?

They could flip it to any format and draw higher numbers than what they are pulling in...

Do you care to expound upon that statement? When you say "any format", does that mean the current format is the only failing format in the market while something as obscure at 24/7 barking dogs will garner much higer ratings and greater ad revenue? A "barking dog" format along with Gypsy Dance Music, All Weather All The Time, All Bingo, All Hare Krishna Chants and a host of others all qualify as "any format" as you suggested. The reason I am asking this specific question is because I'm attempting to challenge you to think about what may actually work while utilizing WPBZ to its highest and best use as opposed to what may not necessarily be the best fit. In other words, there may be a deliberate, justifiable business reason why CBS has chosen to remain with the current format as opposed to "flipping" to something else although that isn't to say something completely different isn't on the horizon.

I don't think the station needs a flip, its need a reimaging. First off, get a new airstaff, a staff with a set of pipes, get the squeaky kids off the air. Find an adult airstaff, find voices with authority.

Second, GO GOLD.....keep it alternative, but go back to when alternative rock broke into the mainstream and the so called "college rock" band of that era began gaining notice and were racking up nice album sales without radio support.

Otherwords, a type of "College Classic Rock" format if you will, only with the production and structure of a commercial radio station.

I think the Buzz conscentrating on the late 80's though late 90's....put band like Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Husker Du and other staples of the college rock format...mix in some new wave and punk from the 70's and MTV 80's. And for god sakes, when an established band like Pearl Jam releases a new album, don't play a 15 years old Pearl Jam tune and "talk" about the "new" album.....just play the new album!!!!

Also come up with better promotions. My god that whole "Meat Biniki Contest" they came up with...that was without a doubt the most offensive, dummiest promotional idea since WKRP tossed turkeys out of a hellicopter. What the hell is the point of devising a contest connnected to Lady Gaga on a station that doesn't play Lady Gaga.

In short, mature announcers, go gold, keep it alterrnative. It would appeal to a much older audience. The only people that are listening to crap like Mumford or Death Cab for Cutie are 12 year olds...and you can't make money off 12 years olds.

For an Alternative station, The Buzz plays an above-average amount of '90s Gold. Moreover, in some of their new promo spots, they are sampling early Pearl Jam and Nirvana tunes. I agree that their jocks are not the greatest, but at this stage in radio, at least they have jocks. And at least their jocks have more interesting things to say (or are allowed to say more interesting things) than the jocks on WRMF. And at least their jocks are local, unlike most of what is hear on Wild 95.5.

CBS definitely responded to the death of 93 Rock. Whether THEIR card's about to get punched in the near future is pure speculation, like the good Dr. Tillery said.

With CBS' success with the Oldies/Classic Hits/"Greatest Hits" outlets like CBS-FM, K-Earth, WOMC, etc., etc., you'd think they would give it a go in WPB and the Treasure Coast with 103.1, a C1 from Martin County. Their targets could be Kool 105.5 in PBC and (once again) Oldies 103.7 in STU/PSL and a flanker to their "Money" 104.3. Mind you, WQOL just doesn't have the signal in South St. Lucie and Martin Counties, although AM 1000 is All Scott Shannon All The Time. WOLL doesn't have the signal in South PBC, where Majic 102.7 has the height from the Dade/Broward line.

Or move B to 103.1 so they have similar coverage areas as B is Urban AC and X is straight Hip-hop. Might make for easier package buys.

Or do away with the Alt/Rock and pull an "Easy"-esque format as a flanker to their "Money" 104.3.

Or really be daring, move B to 103.1, and 106.3 becomes monophonic WFAN-FM.

You know what...Scott when you're right, you're right. At least they are live and local...I'll give them that. You quote made me think that the Buzz crew is better than listening to Ken Dasahau and Maria Malito lifelessly piping it in from New York and having Doc voiced tracked on the overnights at Big 105.9

The only game in town. And this is now a big town with 93 Rock gone. How's the signal down in Broward and Dade?

The signal is inferior in Fort Lauderdale and Miami - Dade for several reasons: 1) WPBZ's 103.1 C1 signal is requred to protect two second adjancent Miami - Dade class C signals - 102.7 and 103.5; and, 2) WPBZ'a tower is located between Indiantown (WPBZ's COL) and West Palm beach, slighty North / Northwest of the West Palm Beach market - which is too far away from Miami - Dade to make any kind of impact in Florida's number one radio market.

I'm not sure if there has been any increase in numbers since 93 Rock stopped the music. I'm thinking the numbers actually went down since Cox made the flip.
