Buzz...what are you THINKING??

Guys...I love ya, but this BIG CHEESE weekend? The Cheesiest Music in Memphis? Come on. Why not just do a promo that says, "We know that FM 100 does Whatever Weekends, and we like 'em too, so we're going to play all the songs they do on the weekend, and hope you can't tell the difference!" Radio 101 dictates that you NEVER acknowledge your competitor and shine them in a positive light. That's exactly what the Buzz is doing.

The old PD in me is flaring up again...sorry.

They really need to ignore what 100 is doing, and by borrowing from their weekend playbook, this may have the opposite effect.

Is it just me, or does WMBZ sound really all over the place during the week, too?

Well, once again I feel the need to post. No, I don't think that MBZ sounds all over the place at all. Kramer was a great guy and well liked, but I think that Brad Carson has the station very focused as well as shooting straight at their target demo. One thing I have noticed about MBZ lately is they are constantly doing high visiblity promotions, i.e. the concert flyaways around the US as well as a show in Europe to see Ben Folds. The promotion department seems to have their ducks in a row and committed to making the station sound fun. Also, Rob Cressman has 93X sounding great as well, considering the budget he has to work with. Basically, I think both MBZ and 93X continue to make Memphis radio sound fresh. And in closing, I doubt if Brad Carson is really borrowing anything from "FM100s weekend playbook". 100 does their thing and the Buzz is doing theirs. The next book will lay it all out for us.

Listen, this happened back in the late 70's with WMPS and WHBQ.Seems as though those two would always play the same songs almost identical. I mean yeah, somebody is playing catchup here and the music just dont cut it. Myself, I wouyld rather play Hippy rock and roll kinda like today.

Actually, if this is a direct reaction to the "halfjacked" mediocrity that's been transmitted from 1960 Union, I would be surprised. Both are just silly weekends, this weekend. At least one has admitted it, and had fun with it.

While having a "cheese" weekend does open yourself up for some cheap shots, especially since Buzz claimed "No Cheese, Please" for years.

Preparation H does wonders for that... Most of the staffers at one of these HOT AC's probably have a supply of it, too! Next to the Metamucil, and the AARP card...

Maybe. However, when Tim Mcgraw's "Live like you were dyin' " is played on a "HOT AC", aren't they both? Following the Model of 100, All over the road, is their Radio 101, and has been for years. That's what happens when you can't decide on bringing the 37 year old woman to the dance, or the 19 year old. At least Buzz, keeps the target on the arm candy. If 100 looked closely at the numbers, they would too, if the sales staff would allow that... BTW Buzz, more "Baby got Back" and Right Said Fred! (the 12" spanish version, if you have the guts?) Is that just the "homer" in you Kane, or do you really like WMBZ?
Is your moniker on this board known elsewhere? That may explain some part in your response. In radio years, there is a slim difference in someone who needs metamucil and an aarp card and someone the same age as yourself, for example.
Brother, age has little to do with most of this. It's all about the money and what some corporate dil-wads scribble out on a cocktail napkin over cheap wine and cigarettes in the "(BLEEP)-eyed Camel" or some such place.(I know it's gone, BTW)
Oh, well...If worst comes to worst, there's still that groovy station in Covington, huh?

Hey Meep, thanks for the kind words. Unfortunatley, the majority of the people on here choose to post under something other than their real name so I don't know who you are but I assume you have been around for awhile. First, I need to clarify something that I stated in the earlier post. I thing that MBZ sounds very focused doing what they do on a day to day basis. I listened to them most of the day today during the Cheeze Weekend and yes I must say that it did sound as if they were reacting to the FM100 whatever weekend. I learned a long time ago from people in this business who have gone on to bigger and better things that you dont react to the competion. Personally, I think that the whole concept of these off the wall weekends are not all that entertaining. But I don't listen as a regular listener would. I fail to understand why a staion on the weekend would deviate so drastically from what they play Monday thru Friday. But hey, it's radio and it is suppose to be fun for the listener. If they like it, so be it. Like I said in the previous post, the book will lay it all out in black and white. As for Kramer, I met him on several occasions, and he was always cordial to me. As far as what kinda bars he chose to go to and what clothing he wore, I could care less.

Honestly, I told my better half the other day that I thought 'Live like you were dying' is the one song in the format that DOES NOT FIT. Don't care that it's popular, you can't segue from Gavin DeGraw into Tim McGraw and not sound like a trainwreck, even with a slick sweeper in the middle. No matter what the station... well.. maybe The River. Doesn't matter though, this is a national thing, all the HotAC's are doing it.

My name is Paul Hankins. I worked at WRVR for a long time as a part-timer on "Solid Gold Sundays" and then On "Froggy 94 for a few years before the Buzz came to be.
I have been in radio (til recently) since the late 70's before I even graduated high school. I've worked at medium market (like Memphis) and small market stations all over the country it seems.
So...I was there when there were turntables with three speeds and when the entire playlist as already programmed into the computer.
As for my posting under another name besides my own...you obviously don't know me and missed some entertaining posts several months ago. If you knew me, you most likely would not try to imply that I was in any way afraid to post or say anything to anybody that posts here. I'll supply you or any of the others my address if you'd like.

You are right, age is not really an issue here, except when it comes to the format. If Scott Shannon can jock on PLJ, obviously HOT AC doesn't mind it, so long as the heritage is there, but come on, even you have to admit it's funny when certain jocks intro Saliva, 3 DOORS DOWN, ETC.?

I haven't done anything for my friend at 1570 for a couple of years. I 've done no radio for a while now, and it's allowed me to be more objective (and honest) since I don't have to worry about who may hear what I have to say. (Unlike yourself)
