Weekday Prime Time, September 6-10, 1971
from the San Diego Union TV Week supplement

Note: Although the Union also listed the VHFs from Los Angeles plus KCET/28, I am only listing the San Diego stations here, because the font and size they chose is hard enough to read in the first place. They even listed KEYT/3 in Santa Barbara, which was viewable in much of the coastal region of San Diego County due to the signal path being a straight line over the Pacific Ocean.

Network programs are marked with a * based on simultaneous carriage by the L.A. network O&O station.

These listings also list the 3:00pm movies on channels 8 and 10 as well as any deviation during the prime time fringe hour from the Monday-Friday daytime listings posted earlier.

Well, something is still wrong, then, because that would indicate XETV pre-empted the 7:30-9:00 block on Monday nights, but the movie they were listed as showing on that Monday was also airing on KABC-TV/7 and KEYT/3, so obviously it was an ABC network movie.

It is conceivable that XETV decided to make an exception to the Monday night pre-empt because of the delayed start time of the regular ABC Monday night movie ... but what did KCST run if the network had a movie feeding which XETV was clearing?

...perhaps KCST was getting weeks-old tapes from ABC instead of taking the series off the live feed? I just checked Brooks and Marsh, and they claim the final episode of It Was a Very Good Year aired on the ABC line the previous week, August 30th...

Brooks & Marsh have always been meticulous about checking multiple sources for start and end dates of series, so I'll accept their claim.

Here is a possibility: We know KCST was in the middle of their legal battle before the FCC about the ABC affiliation in 1971, so it is entirely possible that while the network probably wanted the clearances for the shows if XETV didn't carry them, they may not have wanted to pay for a live network interconnection to KCST under the circumstances. But their Los Angeles O&O was just up the 5 freeway so it wouldn't have been too difficult to bicycle tapes to and from there on a one-week delay.

Or maybe AT&T didn't want to switch the circuit also used by KCST for CBS on Mondays back and forth at 9:00, or maybe there had been a problem in the past with that switch happening on time. Or maybe they were reluctant to mess with the XETV connection while the legal battle was happening, since the television microwave relay network was completely under FCC jurisdiction.

If I had the listings for the following week (which I do not) I could follow a hunch I have, which is that XETV was going to be carrying ABC during that Monday night period going forward so KCST would have been out in the cold anyway. But if they knew that in advance -- and the network certainly would have advised them -- why didn't they schedule something from their local library in that slot, unless they were indeed running those ABC programs on tape delay?

Another possibility is that those three shows did not air on channel 39 on September 6 but the schedule provided to the San Diego Union by KCST still had them scheduled, and the replacement information didn't get to the newspaper in time for it to be corrected pre-press.

I'm sure no one back then would have ever thought that 40 years in the future, there would be this much time spent discussing whether or not those three ABC shows aired on that night on that UHF station!

I think I found the answer, but it leads to more questions.

I went back to my source for the San Diego Union television listings and got the Monday prior (August 30) and following (September 13) pages from TV Week for those dates.

On August 30, KCST aired It's Your Bet at 7:30pm (the usual weeknight offering in that time slot) followed by Theater One from 8:00 to 9:30pm. XETV did not clear any of the three ABC shows in question, but they did not air from 7:30 to 9:00 that week ... they aired from 9:00 to 10:30, following a pre-season NFL game between the Jets and the Chiefs. (Channel 6, meanwhile, aired the programming that would have aired at 6:00 in that time slot (Wild Wild West/Truth or Consequences). Channel 39 had a movie on at 9:30. Obviously, the KCST airings of Let's Make A Deal, The Newlywed Game, and It was A Very Good Year were on a one-week delay.

So now what is unknown is whether KCST usually carried those three ABC shows at their usual times, or if XETV's pre-emption was only for that one Monday. And if so, what did XETV carry from 7:30 to 9:00 on Mondays? And why didn't they just run the pre-empted programs on a tape delay later in the week? For that matter, why didn't KCST?

I get no clues from the September 13 listings as KCST pre-empted its regular schedule beginning at 7:00pm to carry the lightweight championship fight between Ken Buchanan and Ismael Laguna. XETV had To Tell The Truth at 7:30 and Man In Motion at 8:00, then joined the network on schedule at 8:30 for a movie. KABC had a local movie from 6:30 to 8:00, then a NFL preview show before the network flick; KEYT ran Partridge Family at 7:30 and That Girl at 8:00.

I wonder if the August 23 listings would help.
