Bye, bye Accuweather?

I don't listen to KYW "two, three, four times" a day. Once in a while in the car is about it. But it seems lately they have CBS3 weather people doing the weather forecasts, not Accuweather. Did they drop Accuweather to (either) save a few bucks or grab an opportunity to promote TV weather air talent?

Not that it matters, really. Who needs a meteorology degree to read a weather report (provided by the NOAA weather bureau for free to anybody who wants it).

WBZ Newsradio 1030 in Boston uses their WBZ-TV Meteorolgists during weekdays, Accuweather overnights and on weekends. Perhaps KYW is doing the same.

I think it's been several months since they went to this arrangement. Accuweather in AM drive 7 days a week: Elliot Abrams weekdays, a rotating bunch of others Saturday and Sunday mornings. Channel 3 meteorologists from midday (10 am hour) on (at least through the late evening ... can't say I've heard KYW between midnight and morning drive).

My favorite aspect of this arrangement: Hearing Carol Erickson's forecast still on the air during the 5 pm hour on Saturdays. She's on CBS-3 from 5-7 a.m. Saturday morning. You mean no one has updated the forecast after she leaves the building at whatever time Saturday morning?

Then again, the average listener, not a radio or weather geek, probably doesn't notice the difference.

Oddly, when the KYW radio anchors bring in live CBS-3 meteorologists during PM drive weekdays, they are much more likely to engage in some happy chat (well, at least two out of three of the regular afternoon anchors ... we've the topic of the third afternoon anchor before). They seem to have cut off almost all cross talk with Elliot in the morning ... which is a shame because I for one love Elliot's sometimes odd sense of humor.

For weeks after this first started, many of the midday, afternoon and evening anchors had a difficult time NOT saying Accuweather ... some said it, others stumbled. Long-time habits are hard to break.

Now that Julius has stopped listening to 1210, maybe we can focus on how CBS has ruined KYW and all the ways in which KYW sucks.

The weather is the weather. It all comes from the same place, and it's not State College. As mentioned in the OP, it comes from NOAA. Funny how former PA Senator Santorum sponsored a bill four years ago aimed at preventing NOAA from providing weather directly to the public. He also took campaign contributions from AccuWeather. But anyway, AccuWeather is a content provider. It provides branding, just like The Weather Channel, and talent. The sales pitch is that the branding and talent add credibility to the forecast. That's a matter of opinion. Kind of like looking at your watch and telling you what time it is. They provide this service for a price. Meantime, CBS also does weather on TV-3. Their weather personalities have a certain level of credibility too. So why pay for something that you already have in-house? Is it better or worse than Accu-Weather? Only if you happen to like specific AccuWeather people.

At the same time, The Weather Channel is an NBC-Universal product. You'll see it mentioned on Channel 10. They will find ways to incorporate The Weather Channel branding in everything they do. Plus The Weather Channel offers a syndicated radio service, competing against AccuWeather.

I actually prefered Accu-Weather over the CBS 3 weather reports. I felt that Accu-weather was not giving you the weather to induce ratings and I feel TV, all of them in Philadelphia, do report the weather when sever in a way to get you to tune in more.
