Bye Bye ESPN 95.9 WSJZ

The monopolys have spoken. Another new sports network is coming on line soon (we don't have enough of those, do we). CBS sports radio will debut on both CBS and Cumulus owned stations. And WSJZ is one of them. They are trying to pass them off as an Orlando station even though their signal barely makes it into eastern Orange county. I'm sure the folks in Bristol, CT are really thrilled with this.

I've never figured out why ESPN wasn't more aggressive about getting a better affiliate in Orlando, the virtual center of the Disney universe.

Maybe Cox is ready to push DBO entirely to FM.... a 24/7 ESPN feed on 580 wouldn't be a bad thing....

So with ESPN leaving 95.9, does that mean the WRSO station will be picking it up? Or is there yet another change somewhere in the works for where ESPN lands?

Honestly, I can't believe "sports" is the hot topic change across Orlando or Tampa at the moment, but here we are.

The new WRSO will be carrying Yahoo sports. Once that fails I guess they'll try ESPN out ;)
And as for Genesis dropping ESPN to try this Sports Talk Florida, well, how well is their News Talk Florida station WAMT doing?

WRSO seems more concerned with getting that station into a restaurant than they do in garnering ratings. They don't strike me as smart enough to realize that ESPN would be a better affiliation than Yahoo.

I don't think they will be given the option.

With the emergence of CBS' national product I think ESPN is in the process of firing its weak affiliates to take control of the product.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if ESPN moves to 990 and they acquire another signal for Radio Disney, or even if they made Hall Communications an offer they couldn't refuse for WPCV.

Actually, the new management has been more concerned with getting it's local programs in place than the restaurant deal. What part of that doesn't seem smart? Just askin'.

So what are all these stations going to call themselves now? "ESPN 95 point 9" and "ESPN 1080 The Team" were a bit catchy, plugged the brand and made sense ... "CBS Sports Radio 1080 The Team" doesn't flow as well.

CBS will not be available to 1080. Genesis is in the position of having to develop their own content. The "Orlando" affiliate for CBS will be 95.9.

Kudos to someone at Cumulus for working around the holidays .. the change to CBS Sports doesn't start until tomorrow (1/2/13), but the website has been re-branded Sports Radio 95.9 ... still has the ESPN "lineup" available but looks ready for the changeover tomorrow. Noticed too that the Melbourne cluster's websites have all changed to a common Cumulus framework ... so they've picked up on CC's approach to make every station in the nation's website be essentially the same.

I thought 95.9 was Z-88's Hot 95.9, you folks are talking about a station down in Sebastian 67 miles away. My daughter who lives in Orlando only gets Hot 95.9, no way she would want it to flip to sports.

AM-810 used to be the Big 810 Talk Radio then they flip to Yahoo Sports Radio now CBS Sports Radio for Orlando. If u guys looking for ESPN Radio go to AM-580 Orlando.

Kind of sucks. Maybe it was just familiarity but I'm not digging CBS at all. Too many guys trying to come off as loud and/or smug plus the one benefit I thought I'd have of no ESPN, that being getting away from Amy Lawrence, apparently wasn't meant to be. Not that ESPN was perfect either but I'm certainly gonna miss some shows like Coach & Coleman, Bobby V, and The Sporting Life compared to what CBS is offering right now. The worst part too is that living in Palm Bay I have pretty much no luck getting 580 in any way other than streaming it from an app like TuneIn and as someone who likes having something like ESPN on as background noise that obviously becomes a problem unless I want to leave my phone plugged in all day.

So far no personality sticks out. Morning show might grab some attention, Tiki/Dana/some-other-guy are probably the tightest group so far. Can't see CBS overtaking ESPN radio anytime soon in terms of ratings where the might compete, outside maybe Rome who has a following. I've noticed too the sound isn't as crisp as I recall ESPN on FM ... i'd swear it's more compressed - anyone know specifics on how the signal is distributed?

WSJZ is not an Orlando radio station, let alone an Orlando CBS Sports Radio affiliate. The 95.9 70 dBu "city grade" service contour does not cover its local market, that being Brevard County and barley covers Palm Bay. Its 60 dBu service contours barley covers Melbourne and its 54 dBu fringe service contour falls short of Orlando proper by approximately 45-miles. Furthermore 95.9 C3 cannot upgrade to a higher class nor can its tower be moved any closer to Orlando due to potential short-spacing conflicts. WSJZ is basically a Sebastian and Palm Bay radio station, not Orlando.
