Bye Bye Hot FM

http://www.reflector.com/biz/content/business/stories/2007/12/14/businessbeat.html

Kinda sad to me that we're losing one of the better formatted stations in the market (I'm a big Hot AC fan) but Henry Hinton is breaking his lease with Beasley and putting talk on 94.3. It says in there as well that 94.1 will also be changing formats, but doesn't say to what format it will be changing. I don't really understand why he isn't simulcasting talk unless he just wants a Greenville focus. He's also losing Pirate sports as part of this move, something I didn't think he'd want to do.

So, after ~15 years we will no longer have The Hot FM. Truly the end of an era. Took them nearly 10 years to do it, but congratulations NextMedia, Bob 93.3 wins.

93.3 was, however, the original Hot FM. 93 DLX The Hot FM. (They abandoned the slogan with the 1990 format change to AC, leaving it free for Sunny 96.3 to grab.)

Really, this Hot FM has been a mere shell of its former self for about 5 years (ever since Gene Gray sold it). Still weird not having the name in the market though.

2008 will bring changes and hopefully good changes.I will continue to love radio and hope someone will break the mold and give us something different. We need someone to break out and make the listener go WOW again both musically and presentation wise. Will it happen??? Who will be the first to reap the benefits of walking to the beat of a different drummer. The advertizer is out there. The listeners are out there.Who has the grapefruits to go get em'???.I want to write a post on 12-14-2008 congratulating someone in finding the hole in this market and running with it...

Hey Jim,
I think Don Curtis is a good operator. He understands good local radio. His company for the most part is a very solid outfit.Nobody is perfect but overall Curtis Media does a good job in my opinion.I was in Goldsboro for 5 years with Curtis and it was overall a good experience.Trust me there are worse oufits than Curtis.I went through the Archway crap and my 3 year old understands radio better than that crowd..

Inner Banks found a hole in this market. Hot AC is a GAPING hole in this market now that Bob 93.3 is nothing but teenybopper music.

Unfortunately the same thing that kills a lot of good stations killed The Hot FM... lack of marketing. There are Thunder Country billboards everywhere, but I've yet to see one for Hot. They are committed to making Thunder work and should have been committed to making Hot work, unless they planned this move to talk from the start.

That is a good point woot.I'm not sure Thunder has performed as expected either. It's hard to attack a heritage station. Its certainly not the way I would have approached it.Thunder's attack approach confuses me a little.WRNS is not bulletproof by any means. It is like teflon, not matter what happens with next media WRNS never seems to be affected. All of the Next Media crap just doesn't stick to WRNS. I'm not sure WRNS is the only station Thunder should be after but
hey what do I know.I personally would make Thunder a hybrid between the Bear and WRNS.There is lots of late 80's-Mid 90's stuff that neither WRNS or the Bear is playing. There were alot of artist who rode that country explosion of 89-95 that you don't hear much of on the radio,Garth,Alan,Clint & Tim were really just the tip of the iceberg. The first half of 08 will be very important for country in the market.Lots of question marks and possibilities.I just really want radio to thrive
and i admire anyone who is able to make a living in what is really a crazy and ever changing market. One thing is for sure it may sometimes be confusing but its hardly ever boring.... I hope whatever 94.1 does its just different and not the same old stuff...

Has "Inner Banks Media" ever thought about taking 94.1 after the power
increase to 35,000 watts and putting the "Spanish" format on here, just
like "La Ley" in the Triangle, i think it may work.

104.7 is currently Spanish as is 96.9.There is enough Spanish. The Hispanic Community is well served.I will wager than 94.1 will not be Spanish. There is a much bigger audience not being served.I have no qualms with Spanish but that is not the hole in the market.Alternative Polka ::) is the glaring hole in the market. We shall see January 1st.The first quarter of the New Year is gonna be fun I think.

Since Henry Hinton is taking 94.3 to talk, i wonder if he can get a power increase
on this freqency?, I expect what he will do with the schedule is feature some of
the ones "Talk 1070" is carrying now, and i expect them to add "The Savage
Nation" with Micheal Savage, probably from 7 until 10pm weeknights, "The Jim
Bohannon Show" from 10pm until 1am, and "Coast To Coast AM" with George
Noory from 1am until 5am, and probably "America In The Morning" from 5am
until 6am.
As for weekends, don't be surprised if they pick up "The Kim Komando Show",
"The Monica Crowley Show", "Handel On The Law" and others, plus a "Public
Affairs" program Sunday Mornings, most of these talk programs don't air in
the Greenville/Washington area right now, so whatever direction "Inner Banks
Media" takes, i hope listeners will tune in.

Sunday mornings he already airs the NC SPIN show. 9:30am-10:00am I think. I like some of those choices you mentioned. I'd like to see The Tech Guy with Leo Laporte added to the station as well. It's syndicated by Premiere from KFI in Los Angeles.

If I had to put money on 94.1's format I would go with some Spanish format. 96.9 and 104.7 don't make it down to New Bern/Morehead, so that is a format hole down that way. Don Curtis is half owner and has successful experience with La Ley, so it wouldn't be hard to do.

1070 is going contemp Christian on 1-1-08.1070 is already running promos about
94.3 and 1070 and the format changes.94.1 will not be Spanish I don't think...I could be wrong..But I would be shocked and amazed if 94.1 goes Spanish...

Gonna miss the old Hot FM. They sounded great in the early to mid 1990's. They ruled the beaches and usually received high ratings. They did a bunch of remotes on the beach and got out in the community.

It's sad to see another popular station thrown in the crapper. I guess folks will remember the radio station my postername is under. Katie country took it over in 1989, just like Thunder country put the hot fm out to pasture in 2007. :(

:( I'm personally very disappointed to see this station go. I'm hooked on Bob and Sheri in the mornings on my drive into Greenville. I've tried other morning shows and they all annoy me to no end. Now it looks like I'm just out of luck again. It does seem that the station could do a little more to prepare loyal listeners for the rug they are pulling out from under us all.

I think it all bites.

If history repeats itself it will. That show has been all over the dial in this market. Someone inevitably will pick it up.

Don Imus...

Allen

Ugh ... IMUS??? You've GOT to be kidding me! I can't stand him! and I only have a few stations at work that I can pick up (love old buildings), and by the time I get to work in the AM, even if I can manage to stream B&S through the computer, Morons in the News is already off ... that segment just makes my day. Sigh ... and here I thought Santa had actually been good to me this year

Imus won't be coming to 94.3. Henry isn't giving up his morning show, and if memory serves me correctly he pulled Imus from his station years ago when the I-man pretty much blasted Henry, on the nationwide feed, for not airing something he deemed offensive.

I'm sure B&S will show up somewhere else. Hell, Pirate Radio 1250 took them a few years ago. They don't even play music over the feed anymore, so it would be even easier to find a taker.
