Bye Bye Hot FM

The late Large Larry English left Katie Country for WSAY. I'm told he collapsed and died in the SAY building while talking with a colleague. If memory serves, he was replaced by Mark Edwards. Edwards was gone in pretty short order. Eventually, Rick Braswell got the morning slot, and remained thru the shift to 95.5 around 1998.

And Larry's ghost still lurks in the building to this day. Rick Braswell is still with us. He now has well deserved PD stripes for The Big Dawg and is on in the afternoons.

Mark Edwards was a disaster for WKTC, he came from WROO in Jacksonville FL.
Another one of those I will show the hicks how to do radio.
As was posted he did not last long, and was replaced by great talent.
Glad Rick is still in Eastern NC radio.
Are there any plans in the works to put WDWG online?

Since I am the webmaster for the site, the idea has been tossed around to stream it oneday, but it is up to management to do it. I presented all the material on the costs and equipment for streaming and that's as far as it has gotten. We will see.

Rick Braswell is a first class guy.Ron Eric Lundy is one of the best too.Dave Richmond is a great friend with a great voice and he loves radio. The Big Dawg has good people and sounds good. The imaging needs some work and I would love to see someone live and local 7-midnight.Musically in my opinion they need
to add more classics and late 80's and early 90's stuff that you don't hear anymore. To compete with QDR and to hold off the Bear it needs to be about 60/40 new to classic and not the same classics everyone else is playing and they need to jump on new tunes before QDR and mention that in the liners. They would do well to have someone Voice overnights to have a local voice on at all times.I know this cost money and Alex(Damn if I can spell his name) is pretty tight with the money.Owners like that like to visit every 6 months, tell you what is wrong, find ways to cut budget and give you a ra-ra speech before riding off into the sunset for another 6 months and as they are jogging out the door they are yelling sell, sell, sell. They leave the people that do the real work to work on less of a budget than before they came.Owners who are out of state usually no clue what goes on or how hard the staff workers on a daily basis...Most of those who do work hard are nervous about the owners coming into town and wonder will they have a job when he leaves.....Doesn't make for a cool working enviroment.....

RonEric Lundy is one of my heroes in this business. Dave Richmond is a cool guy too. I've worked with Rick since we aquired KTC back in 98. Everyone here is great to work with, but some are defiantely overlooked and undervalued. Names have been withheld to protect the innocent.

They are some who are certainly overvalued.I withhold names but they ain't innocent.Double J you are undervalued bigtime. If you bosses knew half of what I know you know they would know what you know.....you know.... You are so smart about radio but you lack they one special quality that so many have...
the ability to look busy when you ain't doing nothing and you don't toot your own horn enough. You have great radio instincts that can't be taught... you either have them or you don't..... and you do......

Thank you. Yeah looking busy when you're waiting for a production room to come available is an art in itself. Tooting my own horn has never been my forte. I leave that to others to decide if what I do has any real value because I don't know whether it does or not. I just do my job and try to do it to the best of my ability. I guess I need to learn those twoo abilities. Maybe you could teach me how to do both.

I haven't been to this board in a long time but I can always count on the people who know the least about radio to be spouting that they know the most. It also doesn't escape me that the ones who criticize everyone else seem to always be the ones who can't get a job in radio. Maybe its time for some of your folks to grow up and go get a real job outside of the industry where you might be able to make a living. Then you might not have time to sit around all day, listen to radio stations that won't hire you and constantly post crap on here about how bad those stations are.

Thanks for your thoughts.
Perhaps if radio stations did listen to what some of us have to say, radio would start making money again. I for one am one who wishes every day I worked in radio. Every day of my life since I was 5 all I have wanted is a radio job. Pretty hard to get one when all most folks see is a helpless blind man who could never run a board, computer, or answer phones.
So sir, if you do have a radio job I hope you understand how lucky you are. You have been in trusted with the public's air waves so use them well.

Carl is the same dude who has busted me in the past. The reality of the situation is Carl spends time reading this board
when a person of his stature shouldn't care what us little folks think. As a media mogul I would hope you might have something better to do than lurk on this board. Again, I will say again this is strictly for fun and opinions and if someone doesn't agree...well then so be it.I think we all spend alot of time praising those we feel deserve it. I figured I would hear from Carl.He stops by once in a while
takes a shot as us and crawls back under his rock.If there wasn't some merit to our post Carl would not take precious time out of his extremely busy day to respond. The fact of the matter is I totally respect anyone's right to agree or disagree. It keeps things fun.Carl has his panties in a wad bcause every now and then us know nothings may be hitting a little close to home but Carl has every right to spout off just like we all do. I don't do personal attacks and I hope Carl shows some class and doesn't go that route so he won't be exposed..

Allen

Before I put Carl to bed, let me say when I joined this board I made a decision to use my real name as a screen name and I also try to remember to sign my name at the end of my posts.I stand by my opinions as strictly my own. Again there will be no personal attacks from me..just one average guy's observations.
Carl seems to know alot about my potential employment or lack there of.Not only is he taking jabs at me but he is taking jabs at people I respect as well. I feel his post was about as close to a personal attack as you can get. Carl.. sir
since you seem to know enough about our(my) radio career to forecast my future in the business you always have the option to sign your real name like I
will do here. This will be my last mention of Carl unless he chooses to reply. I'm sorry if I have offended anyone on this board but if Carl is passionate enough to reply maybe he will consider using his real name...

Allen Vick

I, like Allen, choose to post my real name and I stand behind every word I type. What I type is my opinions and no one else's. Sometimes it is us part-timers that know more about this business than the ones who THINK they know it all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and I respect their opinions for I know I don't know it all and probably never will. I am one of those "...most folks see is a helpless blind man who could never run a board, computer, or answer phones." for I am leagally blind, but I can run a board, computer and even answer a phone. And I'd love to have a full-time job in this business that I love so much and am passionate about and have been working in for nearly 22 years. I never attack an individual or specific company, but the industry as a whole. IF this industry is to survive the onslought of new media then it HAS to change it's ways of thinking or go the way of dinosaurs.

Double J, both you and ncradiogeek I know well and you both have a lot to offer
radio. Its all about passion and caring in any business. Its those intangible things
that you can't put on a resume that make the difference between a good employee and a great employee. You can't teach passion for radio. You either have it or you don't.I have great respect for you and ncradiogeek.Don't let
another person's preconcieved ideas about you stop you from chasing your radio
dreams...

Sorry it took me so long to post these. Here is the directory for the files:

http://things.inmyhead.org/audio/hotfmflip/

You can right click on them individually and choose "Save As..." to download them.

Awesome air checks! Having listened to the original Hot FM, man this "new" and now silent Hot FM sounds nothing like the old Hot FM when it was on 96.3 Morehead City/103.7 Williamston. Does anyone have any air checks of the old Hot FM?
