Bye Bye Jay!

While TKK no longer has Imus, he's still on in several places in New England and surrounding areas, as I noticed when spinning the dial the other day. WPRV 790 in Providence and WZAN 970 Portland were coming in and they had Imus. He's also on in Plattsburgh NY (across the lake from Burl VT),
Pittsfield MA, and in Portsmouth, Laconia, and Claremont NH. Looked up Imus on Wikipedia--
born in 1940 (slightly younger than I thought?), not sure on health but his show has more than a few
affiliates still.

Something that isn't being talked about here is that with Severin gone and no permanent host in the 6pm-10pm spot, could Greater Media be considering changing formats on WTKK? The station's ratings are down, programming isn't being permanently replaced, etc. Could we be nearing the end of talk radio on 96.9?

1. The ratings are down for WTKK, WRKO, WXKS-AM, and WWZN is in the Twilight Zone.

2. WXKS-FM and WJMN's ratings are sky high.

3. There is no true Urban music station in Boston, and Boston is the largest market without one.

4. WBOT had a weak signal, and WTKK has a good signal.

5. They got rid of Jay Severin and Michelle McPhee.

6. Looks like a switch to Urban is possible, and could very much work.

Interesting--might happen, in which case Howie's alt. source of employment late next year (I
don't think WBZ would hire him) would be WXKS 1200, if they're still doing poli-talk (and indeed
I would expect them to keep it up till the '12 elections. Howie is free as of 10/1/12)

 If I were Howie, I would rather retire than go and work for that sorry excuse of a station. ::)

If Howie joined 1200 it wouldn't be so sorry-an-excuse (and I do think Katz is OK, now we'll see
if ratings and billing justify the format and expense of paying him and a former TKK producer...)

The March numbers are out and the only talk news stations in the top ten are WBZ and WBUR.
I suspect WTKK is going to change to another format.

Do you remember what happened to Star937? And they were from the start programmed for a much wider audience than just urban. The reason you can't compare Boston to those other markets is it has one big difference. A lack of black people compared to most of those markets. Now I'm not suggesting that only black people listen to Urban music because we all know that isn't true. But it does make a big difference and its why formats here that are usually pointed at those audiences are modified a great deal. WJMN would be a good example. The last Census had the number of blacks in Boston at around 150,000. That's a good sized audience for WPOT but isn't really on the radar for a full ClassB FM. They just need a much larger audience to succeed or survive. I myself would love to see a real Urban FM I just think it would have a hard time beating WFNX forget Mike or TKK's ratings. Again I know everyone thinks these corporations have missed something in their research and that's always possible. I'm just afraid they haven't and a radio station here needs to be as popular in Wayland as it is in Dorchester to make it.

A minor ADDITIONAL POINT....

Also, now that Ben Parker's back in Boston, the I-Man is on from 6 to 7 am and 9 am til noon on WEIM, er---uh, WPKZ Fitchburg (1280 / 105.3)

(7 til 9 is local with a four-man show including Parker's former co-host Scott May and, through the miracle of Disney Audioanimatronics, the Eveready Bunny of the Rollstone City, Ray C!)

Nobody knows for sure right now but:
--Ratings aren't too good, but they aren't all that good for RKO or XKS either. However if they bring in a half decent amount of money, or if a sister station helps to subsidize them, they may stay talk. (i.e., RKO may be not bringing in money but WEEI is. XKS- AM may be not bringing in money but Jam'n and Kiss are. And if WTKK isn't bringing in money, surely stations with
high ratings like WMJX and WKLB, maybe WROR too, are...

--Eagan and Brade and Graham contracts expire in '13 I think...they may figure let's keep
going with them; but it is true that even though Jay is off they may still have to pay off
his contract, which was set to expire in '13.

Can they switch to a format that would bring in money and still allow them to pay off Jay
and poss. the others? Hmm, how about a music format with the TKK hosts being used
as DJs? Eagan and Braude with smooth jazz! Michael Graham with CHurban :) Ha...

Same as with WRKO and WXKS...ratings may not be all that good but they may bring in at least some money and if they flip to something else, who's to say the ratings might even
get worse? And would either 1200 or 96.9 give a good offer to Howie late next year?
(For all we know he may have to re-up with Entercom if he gets best offer from them,
or no offer from GM or CC...)

I remember a headline from 1999 in the Herald. (approximately) "96.9 gives up Smooth Jazz for Rough Talk"

Jay always had a few problems, namely not always talking politics on a station people tune into for politics. I had always hated the "lets talk about chicks" aspect of the show, and frankly Bower seems to me to be that aspect of Jay for his entire show. Right after the suspension I tuned in and they were taking calls for "Who should play Quddaffi in the film." Every call was met with "awww thats a good one."

Call me elitist, but I'd rather listen to Magic than people trying to out-do one another in some ridiculous a-political game.

Hey, if that element works for sports-talk radio, it's bound to catch on with news-talk radio at some point... just ask Tom Bigby.
