Bye bye, KFRC-FM

It was all my fault!

I started doing some shows for KFRC when the A's went away last month. Everything was hunky dory until then. I did 10A-3P this past Saturday and Sunday and then on Monday they gave the staff a rubber key to the building. The logic is inescapable.

But it was fun!!

Big Tom,

The heck it was your fault! The weekends were great on KFRC -- you, John Mack, Dean Goss, Ben Fong-Torres "Backstage" ... if you can't do anything with a lineup like that, you should probably flip your station to ... umm, all news. Or something.

You could build a pretty good syndicated Oldies format with that talent...

I think the top managment folks at CBS radio should receive a gold watch that reads "It's time to leave". I don't think CBS put in enough time, energy or money into "doing it right" they were just looking for a quick return on their investment. CBS shows the lack of direction when they change formats in what seems like every 8 months. This erratic behavior makes listeners not want to get too attached to a radio station in fear the format will change within a few months. In the bay area an all news format was tried years ago by both KPIX and KGO what makes CBS think it will work now, I know maybe with a power boost it will fly. The KFRC calls should now join the classic calls graveyard of KYA, KEWB and others so that the memories will live on not just put on HD1 to die a slow death with no talent or personality. A great city deserves a great radio station and I am still waiting but I guess radio will never be what it once was... REST IN PEACE KFRC YOU'LL BE MISSED.

DX is probably right. Anybody want to start a pool on how long the Classic Hits KFRC programming will last on HD?

Aren't there other Oldies variations on HD subcarriers in the Bay Area? (Quick, somebody Google it.)

It reminds me of how KABL was allowed to die of benign neglect ... moved quietly out to Walnut Creek ... put out to pasture in Salinas ... the plug pulled when nobody cared any more.

I'll answer my own dumb question:

KOIT's 96.5-2 is listed as '50s/'60s Oldies. Wonder how many listeners they are attracting.

To DX, Mr. Big and everyone,

It is very sad when a company like CBS puts what could be a killer station on with a great airstaff and then saddles a music station with sports programming like the A's. Put the Dodgers on KRTH or The Yankees on WCBS and the exact thing would happen! People will try the station 2 or 3 times but when they want to listen and the A's are on who is going to go the their computer to listen. NOBODY, unless they are at work.

Let's be real here, Harvill and Preston have less balls than brains to blow up KFRC without even fighting for the chance to see what KFRC could do following the dismal 162 game season of the A's. Shame on Dan Mason for saying he believed in KFRC and the Classic Hits format! What a sham! I hope someone has the balls to prove this group of yahoos that Classic Hits CAN work in San Francisco and it should have happened with the KFRC call letters. Hopefully, the company that tries this format will make it work without the added liabilty of violating the audiences expectations.

It's not that hard! When you're a music station, play music and promote the hell out of it!

Enuff said!

Good day and good luck KFRC staffers Dave Sholin, Celeste Perry, Sue Hall, Jay Coffey, Dean Goss, and Big Tom Parker. You guys/gals are all stars. Get ready to rock real soon... stay tuned!

Too bad about the 3rd or 4th reincarnation of KFRC, but as a whole, KFRC's personalities were inconsistent; every time I listened throughout the day, it sounded like I was listening to a different radio station. Sue Hall was the worst in that respect. She spewed more useless, irrelevant trivia than she seemed to care about the music, her call letters were said haphazardly, i.e., some sets went by without any calls mentioned, and she hardly referred to the music she was playing, just her stupid trivia. Plus, she never knew the meaning of the phrase, "keep it simple, stupid." Such a contrast to Jay Coffee.

To me, Jay Coffee was perfect. He made the music the forefront of drivetime, keeping any relevant trivia to a minimum. He was brief but entertaining and related really well to the format and music. He was fun to listen to.

Dave and Celeste, well, if Celeste had only been coached to keep from stepping all over Dave whenever he opened his mouth, I think I would've stuck around to listen longer. She was irritating. She needed to learn when it was appropriate to jump in and state her piece without bouncing in all the time and drowning out Dave. Oh, well. Too late now.

This last go around, we got GYPED,, They should have put on Bobby Ocean for the Vo and John Mack Flanagan much more air time, we will never hear those on the air with those call letters. looks like its KYA... is our future, works for me! That VO guy CBS used was a joke, the most annoying voice , besides Ron and Cammy! They take the cake for the worst morning or afternnon drive Ive ever heard! Kenny in Concord DONT TRY AND SAVE $$$$ CBS on your VO guy at KRTH, Charley van Dyke is the man! KTVU ch2 used CVD in the late 80s and early 90s for the 10 oclock news,, he is a much better VO guy than KTVU currently uses,, who is that guy?

This may seem an obvious question, but do you have any broadcasting experience? I'm gonna guess no.

No NHR. No broadcasting experience. lot of listening experience. voicing my opinion, I would gather to say promoting guys like John mack Flanagan and Bobby Ocean is too much for your calculator, lets see Ocean has 45 years in radio, John mack Flanagan since 1964 I dont think you have 1/2 the years these two have! Thanks kenny in Concord

if that is the case, i'm even surprised that CBS Radio would make such a move...would a slow ascent on KCBS' part be ENOUGH for the network??

CBS is profitable. Quick, name another major radio broadcaster that is profitable.

What ARE you talking about? IF I understand your screed properly, I'd never compare myself to people like Bobby Ocean. I just meant your grammatically challenged complaining has the distinct ring of someone who has no idea of how broadcasting works. Seems I was right.
To use my favorite analogy, watching doctors operate doesn't make you qualified to do it.

Kenny is Whining again. Better send over John Mack or Bobby O to burp him! Kenny, this an A & B conversation, please C your way out of it. Thanks!

Seriously though, KFRC could have been a profit center for CBS, just given a little marketing whether direct mail, TV and Billboards. 1069 had the best in revenue for September next to KCBS. I was beginning to make money in spit of the A's.

You're saying that KFRC out billed KITS and KLLC in September? The majority of advertising on KFRC is bonus spots used to fill out schedules on KCBS, KLLC and KITS. Hard to believe that KFRC beat anyone in September.

Guys ... please back off the great Kenny from Concord. He's what radio needs more of: passionate listeners who are vocal about what they love.

To use my favorite analogy, watching doctors operate doesn't make you qualified to do it.

And, as I've said before, that logic means that only pro football players should be allowed to have an opinion about the NFL, or that only elected officials should talk about politics.

And please don't equate working in radio to curing cancer. I love radio, too, but seriously...

hey guys (and gals) - aside from all the "attacks" on Kenny from Concord, this is what this thread comes down to in a NUTSHELL:

another GREAT oldies (ok, classic hits) radio station goes by the wayside in the name of dollars - and who gets hurt? EVERYBODY - listeners, DJs, behind-the-scenes people, the city of San Francisco....it's a LOSE-LOSE....:(:(

But i must defend Kenny from Concord - and AGREE with what DJ said - Kenny sounds like a VERY passionate listener - radio should have MORE listeners like that, NO MATTER WHAT THE STATION!!

Andrea

If Kenny is so passionate maybe he should try broadcast school or an internship program. We need a new generation of broadcasters who love Radio.

I have opinions on the NFL too, but I don't pretend to know what I'm talking about and post on football message boards about them. I admire Kenny's passion but I suggest he and others learn about how the radio business works before throwing uninformed statements around.
No one equated radio with curing cancer...don't know where that came from.
Opinions are one thing...pointed criticism of broadcasters and stations presented as the answer to all Radio's problems from someone who's never been behind a mic is another.
