Uhhhh ok, you're wrong.

They're still higher than WNEW, they're higher than PLJ so what makes you think their fate is sealed and they 'want to get out of the dance business"?

Have You Seen CBS Radio's Showing?

I don't think that WKTU slipping a bit is much of a concern compared to CBS Radio New York's "Fantastic 3," 101.1 Jack FM, Mix 102.7 and 92.3 Free FM. All three stations rank at the bottom of the New York powerhouse FMs 12+. Yes, they're only 12+ numbers, but seriously, this is ridiculous. More people are listening to Lite 106.7 than Jack, Mix and Free combined.

Now who thinks country won't do well in New York?

Generally I agree but the 12 plus showings of these are indictive of a larger problem at each station within their dayparts and numbers within demo.

1. 12 Plus number mean absolutely nothing to an adult station.
2. Country will get less than half of KTU's ratings.
3. Some people believe that if they repeat the same thing over and over again it will convince a station mgr. to chuck all of the research data and "give it a shot" and gamble millions of dollars, career...

The station is #9 25-54, and beats such stations as WQHT and WPLJ and WINS and WQCD in this demo. It is doing relatively well, and the January number (extrap) is simply at the low end of the normal range.

Kinda seems that's what happened to WCBS-FM/Jack. Man, those are ugly numbers.

I hope if there is a format change CC flips them to oldies. Maybe like Sunny 1045 in Philly is 60s 70s and 80s and call it Sunny 1035. NYC does need another oldies station right now. Right now in nyc there is probably more people to support an oldies station than a country one. Remember country never did good at all when it was in the nyc market. All's CC needs to do is find a way around the demo problem and it's solved for them to get the advertisers if they went oldies.

That would create competition against their own Lite FM. Not happening. CBS should do that though. "Sunny 101.1"

If CC Does Flip KTU...

... expect it to be switched to their Hurban format that they've placed on stations in Houston and Orlando. Heck, CC flipped its own oldies station in Orlando to put "Rumba" on it...
______________

Rumba is not hurban. It is a tropical with a touch of reggaetón.

And it ain't happening with Hurban in NY.

1. WKTU is a monster biller and top 10 25-54
2. Hurban has younger, less salable demos.
3. There is a reggaetón station already in NY (Only clear calls them by the stupid "hurban" name) which would cause fragmentation of a a new, limited appeal format.
4. Clear is already considering changing the Denver and Albuquerque Hurbans as the ratings are low and revenues very low.
5. Miami's Mega is billing less than a third of the revenue it had as a rock station.
6. Clear has not rolled out a new Hurban for nearly a year. They are not working.
7. In addition to Kalle, there is WSKQ with a high amount of reggaetón and has one of the best morning shows anywhere.

KTU is tied as the 25th highest billing station in the US in 2005. The chances of this one changing now are about the same as seeing a frog dancing flamenco.

Nah and there are already two such or similar stations in town already, la kalle and the otro one.

I've met Jeff Z a while back ago. He has the same intensity about dance as I and other dance music fans do.

I've said it before...Jeff is NOT to blame. It's the sales department. They are the ones who uses these numbers to sell what they can. And if they feel that playing "Margaritaville" at 3PM will help garner those sales, then there you go. And if sales sees a station failing, their thinking would be that, hey it's dance music, let's try something else. When in reality it's the "brand" being put out there (as in the musical aspect of the format, where 'KTU leans older); sales then passes all the demographic info along to Jeff when it comes to programming and in effect, push more of the same bland thing to keep whatever numbers they have.

Sure, they might have the demographics that they want, but if the overall picture continues like this, no doubt there will be a flip since no one wants to open up to the REAL fact that 'KTU would do better if they leaned more HEAVILY on currents and less on the classics. Give Jeff some sort of "carte blanche".

Nor was I trying to compare the two. I was just pointing out CC's commitment to Hispanic programming, and you know in the most diverse market, they'd like to get into that genre before competitor CBS, who's really hurtin' right now...
______________

DJJosB05:

Thanks for the agreement, but I admittedly do sound like a broken record with my 'KTU rants! LOL

I did a post regarding Mix and the troubles CBS Radio has been having with their formats here in New York. If 'KTU doesn't "get it", perhaps Mix should consider going currents.

I agree that CBSs "Fantastic 3" is the real story of the trend, not KTUs slow decline. Still, I don't think country would do much better (or much worse) than the existing CBS formats in NY.

Wow that would be something, nobody would expect NEW to go current. Imagine that, do you think that would benefit WNEW more if they did that or KTU more?
