Bye-Bye Planet Radio 107.3, hello Magic 107.3

Don't know when the flip happened, but Planet Radio 107.3 is no more. The new Magic 107.3 is playing Hotel California-Eagles as I type this. Your The One That I Want-Olivia Newton John and John Travolta just before that.

Has 107.3 actually flipped to some form of adult contemporary or classic hits, calling itself Magic 107.3, or could this be, perhaps, a tease or stunt? Are Lex and Terry gone? I would imagine this would be the case if alternative was dropped in favor of what you described. I haven't listened so this is why I am asking.

Oh my God, what a great surprise to wake up to this morning. Well, so much for no format flips happening anytime soon. I need a new crystal ball but I couldn't be happier with being proved dead wrong. Finally, finally, there is an attempt to offer listeners what is a part of so many markets. From what I am hearing, they are off to a very good start. I love the music choices and it's the kind of formatting I have talked about for years.

I thought I was dreaming as I heard a 60's Beach Boys classic playing on MY Radio - no internet, no station from 1000 miles away. Some great soul too like Mustang Sally. Yes, they are Magic 107.3 and they will be Station #1 on my car presets. I'm sure we'll hear more about this. Given what we have in our town and their ways, even I was doubting this would ever happen. What a great day!!! Who would ever had thought it would be CC. My first order of business getting to work today is to tell the entire floor about this very welcomed change. God, can you tell I'm excited!!! ;D
This long term fight has finally paid off. A station you can sing along too. I wish Magic 107.3 huge success.

To answer a question in this string....Are Lex and Terry gone? Yes, they are off 107.3 - just when you thought things couldn't even get better. How appropriate the King of Pop played instead of L&T. It's a big town sound instead. For those of you involved in this decision, I say "thank you" and that reflects thousands of people in our town who for to long just settled for what was on the air. An excellent move as we prepare for PPM - Magic will be heard in a lot more places than had Planet remained. Have a great day folks!!!!! This is a wonderful day for the River City! :)

So Clear Channel responds to Cox's un-doing of its alternative rocker by going after Cox's classic hits station.

Competitively speaking, it seems to me Cox has pretty much wiped the floor with Clear Channel in Jacksonville in every competitive match up save for the non-contests in country and urban formats. Kiss gets whipped by Ape, and the X blew Planet out of the picture.

Personally, I like Magic but wonder if Eagle is too well positioned. The "oldies" sound of Magic helps differentiate it from Eagle, along with songs like Billie Jean. More female appeal in the playlist in the early going on Magic.

This is getting interesting.

This happened way too fast. Where was the war? I know business is business, but what a kick in the nuts to talent and listeners at the same time.

I don't get it, wasn't Planet getting decent ratings??

It was kinda quick Tommy considering how long they have tried to battle APE with KISS (and had some limited sucesses)....1029 has blasted them in the ratings but the new stations always attract the attention...they didnt wait around to see if Planets 'heritage' would bring them back
As far as L&T , Terry posted on his Facebook that they would be back on in Jax after Oct 1 when the contract allows....which is interesting...I thought they had long term deal with CC...I wonder if they have an 'out' in markets were CC doesnt have a viable station for them......interesting

Simply put.....wow.

I didn't see this one coming! I'm suprised Sunny 94.1 didn't jump on the option to be "Jacksonville's Greatest Hits" and brighten up their soft AC presentation when they moved their transmitter closer to Jax. Seems like a missed opportunity for Renda. JohnJax, I think you're seeing the first effects of a new kid in town - PPM! I know there's been discussion lately on here about what "tweaking" might be taking place because of the approach of the Jax PPM - well, here you go! X102.9 is the apparent victor of the rock war, and most likely Lex & Terry will land on their feet locally, but a few other stations are watching the arrival of Magic 107.3 very carefully. The "new" 96.9 The Eagle is a well-oiled machine, but it's starting to sound stale, Lite 96.1 WEJZ is probably more vunerable than in the past right now, and since their move away from St. Augustine, Sunny 94.1 seems like a signal looking for a market... "Warning! Warning! Will Robinson... the PPM is coming!"

So many memories of Planet Radio - especially at 93.3. Spent some time there doing weekend overnights before getting the AM gig at then-Big 106.5.

Worked with so many great folks there. Chumley, Klinger, Mookie, Crissy (no H, no T), Greg Brady, Beaner, Flounder, Scott Strange (the station's first live jock) & Dick Dale to name a few.

All good things must come to an end. R.I.P. Planet.......

Tommy, you bring up a very good point about the talent and it shows the kind of person you are. In this day when so much is automated, I had forgotten that this day is not joyous for some who lost their jobs. I don't delight in that. Listeners who enjoy a format that goes away get that kick in the nuts feeling. It's happened to all of us.

When you say business is business, I agree. I am on record for not agreeing how this war was conducted. Some just care about the results - so be it. I knew all along there would be casualties. So today, Jacksonville Radio begins a new journey. I just hope it is on the high road.

This is great and the sound is fresh! The Eagle is most likely in trouble now! The Eagle became stale after a year it hit the air in 2004/2005.

Now I am surprised that Clear Channel chose this format after spending the past few years blowing up this format on stations around the country, but maybe Clear Channel sees something since the PPM is coming soon to the market. However I am not surprised Planet died so quickly. X plugged in the right formula and won. That is all can be said.

What station L&T land on...my guess is good as mine because Cox Radio will not put them on at all. So those stations are totally out. That leaves the Renda Broadcasting stations. Well you have two AC format stations and two country stations (all though different decade's). Really Sunny does not make anything with the ratings and now the signal being closer into the city they could do something better with the station. WEJZ does not need a protection station. Gator Country is safe. 100.7 has had some of its best ratings since going Classic Country, but something tells me that either 94.1 or 100.7 will change formats within in the next few months. That is my pick and Renda would pick up L&T with a rock format, prob to a classic rock or even a talker format that is different than what WOKV has.

Also the station is using the same exact jingles package as West Palm Beach's WOLL Kool 105.5 (we actually if that station is still using it. If you go to TM Studios website and go under the jingle packages you will find it. Its a nice package to use. Contemporary, but still got that twist of a classic hits station.

Sorry for the third post, but it is almost 95 percent that Tom Kent will be the 7pm-Midnight show weeknights on this station and I would expect that to come pretty soon considering CC's other Greatest Hits stations carry Tom Kent like similar themed Majic in Cleveland. Also an hour and half commercial free music hour that starts at 8 each weekday morning. This is the biggest sign they are going after the Eagle.

Also who wants to place a big bet they will hire Tom Murphy as one of the personalities if he is still in radio? I am just throwing things out there....anyways I can't turn off the online stream.

I was betting a format change was in the works pretty soon. I was just undecided as to which station would be the first to make a flip. My prediction is at least one other format flip is on the horizon in Jacksonville within the next few months, and we are also going to see format flips in Orlando, Tampa Bay, and Miami fairly soon.

Tom Murphy is on WOKV. I hope he comes over. He is great. This is his thing. I hope this station sticks around for a while. And yes, they can knock the Eagle off the air. That station makes music boring. I rarely listen to it. I hope that they will use DJs the way they should for this format. They need personalities, which is why I hope Tom Murphy comes over.
