Bye Bye Recuerdos

Tonight Spanish Oldies KINV "Recuerdos" 107.7 in Austin changed to "Tu Musica" another Spanish Pop station. We now have three stations playing essentially the same format.

I guess someone at BMP found out about the planned move of Univision and decided to move KXXS to a stronger signal. Or did Univision act when they saw BMP make the move? Mhh. Listening to 107.7 here in College Station and seems like they sound just like KAMA in Houston. Interesting move. Is the name of the station HITS FM? I heard "Tu Musica 107.7 HITS FM". But in all, interesting moves from the both the Hispanic Broadcasting leaders in town.

Ok, they are operated by the Hispanic market leaders, but. KINV 2.1 share, KXBT 2.0 and KXXS 1.4. Collectively they had a 5.5 between three stations. Now they want to split a 1.4 share? Maybe the research that they have indicates that the ppm future of Austin will be pop. The current Houston ppm results indicate Spanish pop rules, at least for now.

I made the same kind of observation when 102.3 The River joined 88.1 the Candle, 91.9/92.1/97.1/106.3 K-Love and Power 106.7 KXPW-LP in the Christian pop field. Make that 4 stations playing essentially the same format.

True, but then again, what was a Hip Hop station doing along side a spanish station cluster? Doesn't fit in. They are probably going for sales, not shares and ratings. Besides, the 92.5 signal hasn't had these good of a ratings in a long time. I think we'll probably be surprised on this outcome.

KXBT 104.9 was always geared to Hispanics as was its predecessor KQBT 104.3. Not to start another argument but Hip Hop is the new Tejano among young Hispanics.

I'm sure the idea behind having hip hop next to Spanish-language formats had to do with hip hop appealing to young Hispanics. After all, speaking Spanish is not a precondition of being Hispanic.

As for Recuerdo flipping, I have a feeling it may have been because the format appealed to too old of an audience. I seem to remember David saying that was why it flipped in San Antonio and that Albuquerque was also experiencing that problem. One has to think Austin could have a similar issue since it's generally a younger market.

Average age of Recuerdo in markets like Dallas and LA is 36.

That sounds about right as it's an excellent performer 25-54 in both of those markets, and I seem to remember it doing very well in that demo in Houston, too.

I believe we talked about Recuerdo in San Antonio, which I seem to remember you saying skewed old, when it flipped to KGSX. Was that also the case in Austin? I also think you had mentioned something about it targeting the first generation from rural Mexico, of which there aren't many in San Antonio. I'm not familiar enough with Austin to know much about the Hispanic population there. However, I may spending a substantial portion of this coming Winter there, which will hopefully give me the opportunity to learn a lot about the area.

Recuerdo actually skews quite young for an oldies based station, and SA and ABQ are markets with very high average ages for the Hispanic population.

The real issue in both of those markets is that a very high percentage of Hispanics are English dominant... 0ver 75% in ABQ.

3 quick questions. Will raul brindis continue to do his morning show on a spanish pop station? 2.Will they clean house and bring in new talent from other markets like they did with KAMA? David who will program the station?

I've been streaming them for the last 3 hours and i hear their slogan always includes the Hitz fm ,kinda wondering why they are including english in the imaging ,to do that they might as well have gone with LA CALLE format like in Dallas!

Mhh, I guess you're not listening to the music. They have Ne-Yo right along side Julieta Venegas. Please listen and take a wild guess who this station may be geared towards?

Second, It's called La Kalle, not La Calle. Besides, the name does not fit the format used in T-sip ville. I'm surprised Univision hasn't taken the "La Kalle" name off of their stations in Fresno (K(a)-LLE FM), San Fransico, and Chicago. Dallas and New York still seem to be leaning a bit "Hurban".

This "Tu Musica" or "Hitz FM" (call it what you want) concept seems to be entirely different than the "Tu Musica" used in Houston. KINV (Austin) and KLLE (Fresno) are different than the "Tu Musica" used in San Antonio (95X) and Houston in that they are throwing some R&B hits into the mix of Lating Hits. This is definetly not Hurban for those of you thinking that it is. Something interesting. Wonder if this will spread into Houston and San Anto?

For a person that claims to have worked for Univision and now working for LBI, you don't know anything. You must be part of La Raza's "Street Team"
