bye bye WJZW HD-2 (from online streaming)

I guess the Cloud company doesn't want to pay the bandwidth costs for streaming WJZW HD-2, despite the fact it is one of the most listened to (and IMO, well programmed Smooth jazz stations left). Just heard an announcement stating "Starting December 1st, the ONLY way to listen to Smooth Jazz 105.9 is on HD Radio).

Oh well. Been a nice 2 years. I listen to this station several hours a day, made for an AWESOME audio backdrop on my trip to Cherokee, NC from Atlanta. Thanks to Verizon Wireless and TuneIn Radio app, I listened to it on the road most of the way going and back. Driving through the Nantahala National Forest listening to Ray Charles was incredible. (amazing at how solid Verizon's 3G CDMA network is, even deep in the middle of nowhere my VZW Iphone4 still had a solid signal in the forest. My AT&T work issued Motorola Tundra, OTOH, was dead most of the route until Andrews)

With all the money broadcasters were sucked into buying HD encoders and transmitters, I guess they have to find some way to get people to go out and buy these things. Too bad Ibiquity didn't make nice with the automobile manufacturers about 5 years ago. What is idiotic is a well programmed stream like WJZW could make a ton of money, and you can't tell me the opex costs are higher than keeping a full power licensed facility on the air. I don't own, and probably never will own an HD radio. If my 20 year old Sony ICF-2010 can't receive it, it isn't worth listening to off the air.

Sorry for the rant. I miss hearing this kind of music on the radio. I even piped it through my car stereo from the Iphone on 105.9 (not in use in ATL or anywhere around here) via a Monster Cable FM Iphone adapter (which sounds very good BTW). All the Cumulus stations in Atlanta are the same 30 recurrent top 40 songs. They destroyed 99X and then brought it back on a translator. They have one of the worst sounding Top hits/top 40 station known as Q-100 (used to be 99X) that is painful to listen to. Guess I'm getting to "old" for radio at 37.

At a time when more and more people are streaming radio, they drop a popular station from their streaming lineup. Great precision work Cumulus!

That move makes little sense. However, they are cutting costs in every way possible, so this was probably felt necessary.
